Great videos, what other scenery software are you running ? Have you tried Lossless scaling software to boost frame rate ?
@ColinParker196719 күн бұрын
Thanks. I may have downloaded some of the airfields using WorldEditor but otherwise, just the Orbx TrueEarth. I haven’t tried the lossless scaling software yet. Chatting to people about it, I understand it behaves a bit oddly if you have multiple apps running on different screens which I do. Will give it a go and post something about it at some point

Never tried this. Will now give it a go. You would have failed an IFR checkride - ±100' 🙂 I know you like a low sun, and it is pretty, but very dull to watch for an hour...... Thanks for doing these videos.

Thanks for the feedback. It’s funny you mention the sky, I was thinking the same thing the other day as well. I have a habit of tracking real world time and weather. It turns out that recording early in the UK approaching winter often results in a bleak aspect!

I fly mostly IFR flight plans in X-Plane 12. The ATC is dismal, in my opinion, for filing IFR flight plans, and the flight following feature has me changing squawk codes more often than is necessary. ATC during IFR operations unfailingly gives me vectors that stray from my filed flight plan, and the majority of IFR flights are not logged as such in the X-Plane 12 logbook. Great video, mate! 😊

Thanks, it will be interesting to see if the promised updates result in a step change. What is a bit weird at Humberside is the missing out of the Approach controller in the the transition to London Control. That and the unwillingness to clear landings in VFR.

Like you, I am flying the Cessna 172 Skyhawk and learning the basics of managing flaps, ailerons, rudder and the rest. At this point I am flying with zero wind and trying my best to take off on the center line and landing on it, too -- it ain't easy and I shuffly from left to right. I'm really enjoying X-Plane 12. I've sub'd, liked and will receive notifications of your future flights.

Thanks for flying ArkanSTOL and for showcasing my scenery! 'Driftwood' the tiny strip on the west is always moving, so unfortunately there are not any satellite imagery which contain it. As a result, I had to cut a hole in the 3D grass so that the runway could be seen, because geotiffs will cover up a grass runway in XP. You did better than a lot of folks who've never flown the course! Cheers!

Do you use something to look around like TrackIR ?
@ColinParker1967Ай бұрын
I use opentrack to manage the head movement in X-Plane and aitrack to actually track head movement. Both are free and open source applications. github.com/AIRLegend/aitrack github.com/opentrack A bit fiddly to setup but they do work very well. The instructions are pretty clear. Happy to do a short intro video if there is interest.

@ColinParker19672 ай бұрын
I’ve tried both and for a variety of reasons prefer X-Plane. Not that I think MSFS isn’t a good simulator, it simply isn’t for me. Competition between Microsoft and Laminar is giving both sides better products so win-win I say. Thanks for watching the video.

I wish X-Plane had little more focus on the social and bush flying, like multiplayer, maybe even you could have a character to walkaround with, and have meet up in remote areas. 😌

I suspect running around in the woods as an avatar will never be X-Plane’s gig. However, there a few options for flying together, VATSim being the most popular. If you are not already a member check out www.cixvfrclub.org.uk. We are a friendly bunch committed to online flying in small planes.

It's too bad that Austin never really embraced scenery. Custom tiles for every occasion might have worked 20 years ago, but you will still need a gazillion of them before things look right. I am really disappointed with the jagged coastlines and the occasional spike on an island shore. I figure some of it is the batch processing isnt quite as advanced as MSFS's AI processing.

I believe they are currently working on a complete rewrite of the scenery engine. Not before time I’d say, looking forward to seeing the results.

Interesting isn’t it. If you look at the airport scenery you will notice a retaining wall at the back of the parking area. Orthophotos just folded straight over the top of it. When I removed the ortho tiles the problem went away.

Graphically still doesn't hold a candle to MSFS.
@ColinParker19673 ай бұрын
Hey Jesse glad you watched the video. Purely on the landscape I would agree, X-Plane has a way to go. Arguably, Microsoft's ability to leverage their Bing Maps content will always give them an edge. In other aspects, for example sound-scape, light and weather, I would say X-Plane has the edge at the moment. I started life as a computer programmer and trying out add-ons to improve the landscape to make it more realistic is part of the fun for me. I would say the best thing about Microsoft's return to the Flight Simulator market is the competitive environment it has created. X-Plane has improve immeasurably because of this and I would bet that MSFS users are seeing the same thing. When two great products go head to head like this, the only winners are us I reckon.
