Love the song except for one line, "He was blood from hip to shoulder from the spur" up till then it showed the respect that bushmen/drovers had for their horse, then blew it with one line of sheer cruelty that would not be missed if it wasn't there, love Slim and I love the song, it always brings a lump to my throat, makes you proud to be Australian, I just never wore spurs, hate them, they are evil and unnecessary and have been campaigning for years to get them banned from horse racing (love Horse racing, just find cruelty abhorrent wherever it occurs, whether in real life or in song)

Love the musical rift in this song after each verse. Slim and Barry - searching for something different - they succeeded.

In the 1960's the ABC radio with Russ Tyson and later Garry Ord used to play a lot of Slim's latest singles. Us kids on the cattle station just loved this song, so next time she was in Brisbane, she bought the 45prm single. I think that song was the one that introduced me to Slim Dusty. Just loved the simple lead guitar picking which of course was by Barry Thornton and the way the two (Bazz and Slim) interacted on the recording. Long live them both...

Slim Dusty - a great success story from Australia.. But It probably would not have been had he not stuck to the talents of his wife Joy Mckean; Barry Thornton who procured most of those authentic lead guitar licks ; song writers of the likes of Joe Daly, Wave Jackson, but mostly of mention Stan Coster of his bush yarns and stories of everyday common day life in the outback of Australia . Long Live you Slim...

A young man at the time I knew was driving through the piliga one night, the truck for no reason slowed, all gauges on the dash normal. A few minuits latter the truck came back up to speed and all was normal. I knew this family well including his parents, he would not have made this up. Scary

When I was a kid We worked without pay I love beest the harvest and stook in the hay? Sisters and brothers in knockabout clothes They were the good days and good times were those I can still hear dad swearing when we let down the gap And the horses spread out through the stooks? on the flat And poor old mum scolding like a bush woman can Pray the lord he's not listening to the talk on that man I help with the mustering for the shearings in june and worked in the shed for the long afternoon picking up fleeces and sweeping the board and fetching the lunches I did what I could I can still hear dad that the swearing the stubborn old youths and we dare not repeat any words that he used And poor old mum scolding like a bush woman can pray the lord he's not listening to the talk from that man We all learned to ride on the old pony mare But the big rangy vealers were more than a dare? We'd bring up the cows to the old cattle yard The groud where we rode them was dusty and hard I can still hear dad swearing when we rode our old bull Straight into the chaft shed and out through the wall And poor old mum scolding like a bush woman can pray the lord he's not listening to the talk from that man Dad bought me a shotgun when I was 14 I soon got my chance to show I was keen The dogs were all barking so I went for a look And a mangy old fox was there stealin a chook I can still hear dad swearing where I splattered with shot The rear of the outhouse while shooting that fox And poor old mum scolding like a bush woman can pray the lord he's not listening to the talk from that man Twas many long hours we spent with the dogs Flushing out rabbits from the old hollow logs In the foothills and scrub where the gullies are bound We knew all the places where game could be found I can still hear dad swearing as we burned that old log The day big snake bit his best kelpie dog And poor old mum scolding like a bush woman can Pray the lord he's not listening to the talk from that man But those days have vanished like childhood they've flown An abandoned old house in the bush stands alone Where a ghostly old figure in a big floppy hat Still brings us our lunch through the stoops on the flat I can still hear dad swearing as we buried old mum As we stood by her grave in the warm autumn sun And still hear her scolding like a bush woman can pray the lord he's not listening to the talk from that man

I remember Barry Thornton who played behind Slim Dusty for some 20 years , saying at a country music get together that "' the best Slim Dusty songs were the one he wrote himself". I have often thought about his comment, and I am now beginning to realize that maybe he was right.

I loved this song, mother nature IS our boss, and time means absolutely nothing out in the west, and, I'm 💯 PC Sure, ppl wouldn't suffer from anxiety and, depression if they all lived our lives like that, 😊 I remember Dad, NEVER looking at his watch!! , when I was out there on his tractor with him, and or, whatever he was doing at work, for example, he knew 💯 PC just by the sun, what time it was, he'd say "we'd better have dinner Pete", and, I'd look at My watch, and, sure enough, it was 12pm, (mid-day),+ he'd do the same thing when it was smoko times!!😊his arms were sunburned black, and, his name was Alan Storck from yetman, where he's now buried, he went too COONAMBLE in 1952, fencing and he ENDED up share farming, then he worked at the Abattoirs in coonamble,he. Literally built 😊 AND, he welded everything in the place, dad's welds, NEVER BROKE!!, AND, He welded every rail in the abattoirs, in about 1972, which r still there today, He loved slim dusty, and I cut my teeth on slim, rest in peace Dad and Slim, YOUS were the best
