Can you say anything about how the physical model works for people who don't have access to the book/package? This sounds great
@ersatz_ben6 күн бұрын
It’s basically Karplus-Strong synthesis. I’ve implemented different audio processing for +ve and -ve signal values in the feedback loop, which creates non-linearity and resonances. The stuff from the book is only a resonant biquad filter, it’s used in the feedback loop of the Karplus Strong chain to shape the response and provide the tonal characteristics of the model. I don’t know if this is very scientific though - I am not an expert! I like how it sounds though ◡̈
@ersatz_ben6 күн бұрын
You could try using a simple mix/history filter instead of the GO object, it won’t be exactly the same but it will help you to get to grips with how filtering the K-S feedback chain can affect the sound
@adamluhring24823 күн бұрын
@@ersatz_ben Thank you so much for the explanation! I finally got a chance to play around with this. Running the builtin svf~ filters into a delay with feedback seems to work about the same! This is the best drum synthesizing I've found

I really don’t like doing that, cos the cords can become much harder to trace, making the patch much harder to debug in my experience!

@@zoljol I guess you're right! Maybe I work more neatly than I thought. I tend to straighten up the longer patch cords that run from one side of the patch to the other, if they are getting in the way of other objects

your works are amazing even tho i dont understand the process. one question : what do u mean by "driven by signals" ? what kind of signal ? and what are events??? whats the difference between two?
@ersatz_ben2 ай бұрын
Thanks! An event is something like a message or a bang that is passed between objects in Max. Events are very commonly used for controlling things in the patch. This is like normal computer code where events are scheduled and processed sequentially. A signal is audio information like sound or a CV/gate signal in eurorack world. Signals are processed by MSP objects (the ones that end in a tilde~). Audio signals must always be processed with super accurate timing otherwise they sound wrong, but you can exploit that aspect of a signal to achieve incredible timing accuracy for other purposes, eg for accurate triggering of notes (as in this patch). This is the world of DSP and it is very powerful. Hope that helps

@patchesinblue2 ай бұрын
Brilliant! One of the best examples of what max/msp gen can do. Could you share a bit on your process of figuring out what needs to be done, algorithmically or DSP wise? Say for example, figuring out that an accum object could handle the short term less than 1 values to create a hold time and smooth out the impulses.
@ersatz_ben2 ай бұрын
Thanks v much! There’s a really good book called Generating Sound and Organizing Time by Wakefield and Taylor - it is basically a dedicated gen~ cookbook and covers lots of the core concepts for working in gen~. I highly recommend it. The trick with the accum operator was my way of trying to emulate the count~ object in Max, which can be used to very precisely measure elapsed time. (Accum is covered in chapter 2 of the book!)

i just got access to a daisy patch init and was surprised at how straight forward it is to load gen onto it! definitely want to learn how to build my own stuff with a seed. i’m guessing it’s just the seed in there with pots and switches connected and audio going straight to the adc/dac? or did you do any fancy analog circuitry along with it?
@ersatz_ben3 ай бұрын
Yeah that’s exactly it, and you can connect the + of a 9V DC supply straight to the VIN pin to power it. You do have to make a custom json file for the ADC inputs (and then browse for that in the oopsy bpatcher) but that’s all easy enough. The hardest bit for me was learning to solder! Also you have to provide 3.3V to the pots/switches separately if you have more than 6 or so, but that is also quite easy to achieve with a cheap voltage regulator.
@f.botello3 ай бұрын
@@ersatz_ben oh wow! just going straight from 9V that's awesome. I gotta dig up the seed ive got stashed around somewhere and start working on something similar. would absolutely love to have a stereo efx box to throw all sorts of weird patches onto
