Just played my 5th game of Spirit Island using Vengeance, and Vengeance is my favorite so far! My wife and I just got into the game a few weeks ago, and after the first 3 games, I went all in and bought every expansion. She played Ocean's Hungry Grasp, and I was itching to try the Fire Lizard (I love Lizards so I had to try Vengeance immediately). We played with Events (it was only our 2nd game with Events) and we randomly selected the Blight card (it was All Things Weaken). The game ended with the Blight card flipped (and only 1 Blight left on the card), all Cities destroyed (with only a couple Towns and a handful of Explorers), both of us with only 3 Presence (each), and SO much Disease and Blight spread across both boards. It was the most intense, on-the-edge-of-our-seats game we've played yet! It was SO fun to see what I thought was going to be our first loss (we'd won all 4 games so far), only for me to realize the Major power I drafted that very same turn generated 2 Fear; we needed EXACTLY 2 Fear to flip the Fear card and get Terror Level 3. We immediately met the victory condition, as all Cities were already destroyed. It was such a satisfying game! Your videos have been a joy to watch as a new player and have helped a TON in understanding the subtle intricacies of this game. Keep up the great content!

Around 24:32, I think because the event says, "Spirits may prevent...." then it is considered a spirt action, but I agree it is counter intuitive.

I would have use Darkness Swallows on the Explorer in Land 8, because Mantle of Dread could push the other one *and* its town out of Land 5

I have a soft spot for bottom track Stone. I usually go top track to 2 card plays, but I love the way that the innates Threshold when you go bottom track.

Got any good strats/builds for it? I like the idea of it, but I find I'm always doing much worse than top-track (or just winning 2-3 turns later). Even in the lategame where I'd expect the constant thresholds, I'm so far behind on energy (and/or cards) that I'm not as powerful. I get that you basically can't fully threshold the right innate without a bottom-track build and it's very powerful (and thresholds fastish), but I feel like the price is so high to do it.

@@Novagenesis I'm not saying that I have a great strategy going "bottom-focused", merely that I prefer it. I'm not one of those players that has to play the optimum build and min/max the heck out of everything. I use majors more than I used to (if Horizons taught me anything, it taught me that), but I still prefer to do 3 or 4 small things plus a couple of big Innates than do one big thing (and probably no Innates *and* not hit the Threshold on a Major)

Ironically a Servant victory is far less dark and messed up than this. The Servants go out of their way to prove to the Hydra that humanity can be trusted with its own fate within the Hydra consensus, and refuse the most harsh of the Hydra demands, while the Protectorate just accepts them without thinking. It's pretty cool though, I also appreciate that a faction like the Protectorate is included in the game and I quite enjoy each faction's unique flavor text for when they research the Alien-related techs

Oh yeah, Protectorate victory is worst timeline. I think it's an interesting story, though! Watching idealists slowly corrupt under the influence of reality and pherocytes is a fascinating bit of sci-fi imo. I'm not actually sure Kieran manages to maintain ANY of his ideals by the end of the game.

You have to play with B&C and JE turned off to get the higher difficulty from the thematic boards. It's a little weird, technically thematic boards with tokens are considered +1 difficulty while they're considered +3 difficulty without tokens.

I tried my hand at an adversary today for the first time. Tried BP and then saw that level 1 didn't look too bad so I added level 1. Felt a bit shaky toward the end but the extra towns are just good eats for Lightning. Before I knew it, terror 3 arrived and I won immediately!

Nice job! It always starts getting tight when the Blighted Island card and Events start eating Presence and you're playing a reclaim loop spirit with little "wriggle room".

Man, those JE Events can be brutal! Especially those that add Cities and Towns (I feel I may have said this before!). Habsburg is a real balancing act: you need blight to avoid adding too many extra towns and to deal with the issue of Durability, but then too much Blight can lead to an Event-driven loss. I certainly don't have any answers

It's definitely tricky. I'm going to try the matchup a couple more times to see if I can get a win without soliciting help, but if I can't I know there are folks with lots of Habsburg experience out there.

It's used in games in which you elect to not use the event deck. It's based on the Invader Deck and you get 2 command Beast actions one when the deck goes to Invader Tier 2 and another when it goes to Tier 3, but I guess since he was playing against Brandenburg-Prussia at level 6 you get it turn one since the invader deck is so sped up. This combined with the spirit choice and some lucky RNG allowed him to wipe the entire board turn 1. Also yes, it's in the rules for the expansion that adds it, can't remember which one, I think Branch and Claw?

Command Beasts is an optional rule if playing without events but still using tokens/other expansion content. I think for the physical game it came out with Jagged Earth, but it's been in digital ever since Branch and Claw came out. Basically, when you first hit invader stage 2 (and again at stage 3) you get a single use "command beasts" power which can be used in the fast phase to allow each beast token to do 1 damage, push to an adjacent land, or (if invaders are present) generate 1 fear. This is very useful for speed runs ;)

Around min 29: I think you can easily win in the fast if you add the disease to land 4, you firey vengeance on land 2 and use any level of your left innate on land 4 :)

Whether you believe me or not, I haven't actually tried the Habs 5 run yet :P Real life has just gotten in the way and I haven't felt up to banging my head into that particular wall in the spare time I've had. I'm hoping to get it done and posted (win or lose) by Friday.

Technically it's spreading Badlands (thanks to Vengeance's SR). The game actually adds a Badlands token instead of a blight when you do that.

haha even after 350+ games of Vengeance on the app, I have been thinking that Hazards spread would be copying a blight if I selected one. Obviously, I never tried to find out!
