Pat’s all about flow. His vocabulary is limited but damn he owns it like no one’s biz! He’s a cut above for sure…

I love the dichotomy of how the melody/harmony/form is both followed but also transcended into free form at the same time.

Indudablemente, Gary Burton es una de las grandes influencias musicales que tuvo Pat Metheny

I saw him with the Count Basie big band in the 1980s. He had a 30 minutes solo part, excellently performed. Unlike most other jazz guitarists he's playing finger style, not using a straight pick, with his thumb and the next three fingers classical style. Reminded me of Chet Atkins in many ways with segments of alternating bass like him creating a terrific rhythm. Good memories.

"Jazz is just a series of mistakes without the 'oops.' Nigel Tuffnail (sic) Now a realistic Kurt Vonnegut quote, "Comedians and jazz musicians have been more comforting and enlightening to me than preachers or politicians or philosophers or poets or painters or novelists of my time. Historians in the future, in my opinion, will congratulate us on very little other than our clowning and our jazz.

Robben Ford is the reason I moved to Los Angeles in the 80s. Ive been to concerts, seminars, and master classes with him. The Inside Story changed my life!! Whenever I listen to it, I'm that 16 year old teenager just getting decent on guitar and living in this incredible world of music!! Thanks Mr Ford!!! 💙💙💙

Holy crap this is incredible. I first heard this song from a Dizzy Gillespie recording and the reimagination of that classic is amazing.

After his solo he looked around briefly appearing somewhat satisfied. He may not have broken a sweat.

I had the great privilege of seeing him live on two occasions. At Hungry Joe's on the beach in Huntington Beach, California I got an early seat and was closest to him, only about five feet away. It was wonderful. At that time, he still played with a pick and was with a trio including bass and drums. As he said in an interview in Guitar Player magazine, he drank a glass of wine before playing to mellow out. What an immortal talent he was.

You know when you hear Jimmy Haslip playing, unmistakable MASTER of the bass . Robben Lee hunched over volcanic spewing vamping in his unique dance groove, the one an only WUNDERKIND smoking engine. What a ride!

It’s not just jazz he’s inspired, but guitarists around the entire music sphere. I can hear a bit of him in Mac Demarco, especially on that new album with 200 songs. Joe Pass truly deserves to be recognized as a guitar great.

Great playing by all but to me this is Pat Metheny's best solo and the Gibson sounds better than the Ibanez he plays now. I saw them with Will Lee on bass at the Blue Note in New York when the were on the Reunion tour in the early 90's. Absolutely amazing. Thanks for posting.

Being a devout fan of both PM & GB, I purchased the CD “Reunion” shortly after it came out. “Autumn” is the lead track and one of my favorites on the CD. While the people who play in the NBC orchestra are all top level players, I agree that the background comping was way too loud for reasons unknown to me. The tune is also played noticeably faster here than on the CD, possibly due to time constraints imposed by the network. If true, I’m amused how Gary only takes 2 choruses then hands it off to Pat who plays 2 choruses, ignores Gary’s look and proceeds to take a third, which further compliments his first 2, and I’m completely delighted that he did it!! I’m thinking there may have been some very “Adult language” in the control room over this. 😅

It almost sounds like his guitar is not in tune. I can't make sense of a melody or anything. It doesn't sound good. He can play 60 chords but it doesn't sound good. This is music they played in 1950's Bugs Bunny cartoons.
