I got it to work.. but it only pulls up the "DUET" boot menu half the time.. and other times it simply doesn't.. and I have to reset. (which is annoying). What you're seeing here is the reFInd menu. On mine, many times, the reFind menu will show (like yours), but it will not see my drive. So again, I have to reset. I have an NVMe in a PCIe adapter and my motherboard can't boot to it alone. It doesn't even recognize the NVMe and just says "generic storage". If you look up "tianocore" boot manager in images, that is what DUET will show (half the time). For me, when this DUET boot menu shows up, it will then boot into reFind and THEN I can see my drive and boot in from there. I can also choose to just boot straight into my OS from the DUET boot screen, so I'm not sure why reFind even needs to be there. I'll probably dig up a different method, because again: this only works about half the time and I need to continually push 'reset' to force it to try again.... because it just gets stuck on a black screen with a blinking cursor. Reset a few times and then suddenly the DUET menu finally pops up. I don't know why it's unreliable. Maybe my USB stick damaged.. I'm not sure. (it's old). It's annoying enough that I need to go ahead with a different method. (btw, I have to put the boot priority to the USB for it to work at all-- and for mine, it shows two options. a "usb drive" and also a "UEFI-USB drive"-- in priorities; the UEFI option doesn't work). Also in my PCIe section, there is an option for "legacy vs EFI" as a "boot preference" -- mine is in legacy. If I select EFI, it just bricks my PC and goes black and I have to reset cMos just to get it back. (luckily I figured that out). I'm not sure if it goes black because of gtx1060 drivers? or if there's another reason. But I cant select EFI mode at all.. so that makes it more annoying, since it might help boot from NVME. I've been on this for days. thanks for the videos-- I at least partially have it working.

Everything seemed to work up until the final 'install" list came to "finish up" and then it says it needs to restart to finish-- and it never picks back up where it left off. Since I have to go through duet, it just starts the install all over. I clicked on "continue" in the troubleshooting and it says it's missing Windows\system32\winload.efi and needs repaired. but when I try to repair it, it just crashes and auto restarts. I feel like this would work if I already had it installed on the drive. But I can't get windows to just carry on with the install and not want to restart. smh.. What a mess. :) ....... Am I supposed to load a driver or something? It's a ta970 biostar board, amd 8320 cpu, gtx1060 graphics card. My nvme is installed into a PCIe adapter. I'm so close.. I just need to get that last finish on the install.

1 major problem. Yes rEFInd is a Boot manager and will allow you to install to an NVME on older equipment like my HP Notebook. What you fail to show is an install up to the first reboot. I have been installing, wiping, reinstalling for over a month trying to escape the install loop. As Windows finishes it's initial install a required reboot happens, this is where I am locked. Both Duet with rEFInd and Refind installed via Pop OS. I have a video of this issue on my channel initial install is on the NVME SSD, to select the Windows Icon as Boot only leads to a Recovery error not second stage install. It is the exact same with rEFInd on Thumb Drive. It would be nice to see a full install and getting past the reboot!!!!!!!

Yeah I wish I knew why I never had any issues doing this on my own motherboards. It just worked every time for me. Yes of course. DUET is your new BIOS. Your Boards built in BIOS does not see NVMe, so that is why you are using DUET, so that it enables NVMe discovery and booting. If you dont have DUET/Refind installed in the USB your board will NEVER be able to boot a NVMe SSD.

If you want really small, then you could get a Kingston FCR-MRG2 and populate it with a 4GB (or any size) MicroSD card. That should work fine. Not sure why the 64GB isn't working though. None of my 4GB drives were big, in fact several were so small I could just barely get a grip on them to pull them out, so not sure what you mean by big old 4Gb thing protruding. I have no clue really. Either the DUET is faulty or your systems BIOS is interfering with it somehow. Booting to DUET should be possible on all known x86 systems to have ever existed (assuming it has a usb port that is bootable), otherwise something is wrong with that system or the DUET drive.

Finally a sane video tutorial on the topic. Thank You for that and even more for the valuable info about Samsung 950 Pro NVMe. I went to Samsung site and there is no mention of that feature?
@rgray3185 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the props. I wish it was more consistent because jumping from one machine to another might confuse some people. I just didn't have more than one nvme at the time and I didn't want to show DUET on my 2018 Asrock board because it has nvme support natively through its UEFI. The machine I was using was a really old machine even older than the X58 platform. Generally speaking if the machine has PCIe and is Intel based there is a good chance that you can boot from a nvme drive using a UEFI bootloader such as DUET. But I have found several boards now that I couldn't get working with nvme. Samsungs 950 series was using a modified version of a sata nand controller, so it had legacy boot mode already built in natively. Samsung didn't advertise it because they knew it was NOT going to consistently work on legacy bios systems. Not all boards, especially on the AMD side of things were designed to be booted from the PCIe bus. This fact alone caused Samsung to drop any and all considerations to inform the public of its ability to possibly work on older systems. The 950 is an official NVMe drive. It just happens to work on many legacy systems using bios and mbr. The 960 series was Samsungs first truly built from the ground up NVMe ONLY nand controller. That is the best explanation I can come up with. Lol
