I was a limo driver drove her to that show. Get the car looks at me asked me if I know where to get some good weed. We got high. And she said I’m having problems with the rap part and trouble man so she kept saying it to me over and over again. Just me and her in the limo. to say she was cool. Would be an understatement.

You saved me from my crazy family, my bleak neighborhood of brcks, and from my loneliness. I am one of millions who grew up with you as teacher, imaginary friend,, a fellow traveller, who translates our struggle into words and music.

My life wasn't filled with such enchanting or wealthy lovers as those Joni so elegantly describes in this song, but nonetheless, the theme of the song and its message described my young life, touching me, affecting me in such a deeply personal way that it's beyond measuring the lessons it taught; the effect it had on me. Considering that no one before her ever wrote and shared with the world such intimately exposing songs of their lives -- that's remarkable enough in itself. But to have done it in a way that can reach across time and space to express moments strangers have also experienced -- that's not just powerful, but magical. I love you, Joni; thank you for sharing your life with us.

Didn’t know this version - excellent recording for a live show. I first heard this in the car on a long journey in the 80s - I had to stop in case I crashed the car. What a classic of chording, harmony and poetry. Took me weeks to work out what Joni’s guitar tuning was - everyone knows what it is now of course, but back then it was a mystery, to me at least. It’s had a huge influence on my music development and appreciation. A turning point in my life. Profound.

I just looked at the reference to the Second Fret performances in Philly in 1966. When Joni was in town, she was interviewed by my old friend and colleague Gene Shay. I was 13 at the time, and my parents were not going to take me to the city to be in what they thought was a "nightclub." Starting at age 24, when I worked as Gene's producer for his Sunday night folk show, we would occasionally play back that interview, where Joni explained California Kitchen Tuning. I missed quite a bit because I was too young at the time, but I like to think I was able to make up for that in later years, when Gene and I sat down with Judy Collins.

This was right after Woodstock. She'd played 2 weeks before at the Atlantic City Pop Festival, but had a disappointing reception from the crowd that was a bit overanxious to rock. She kept her style and class intact, and lived to play another day, and be the absolute GOAT!

There are some songs you wish would not end...this is one. As if those images and lyrics might keep weaving and spinning, chorus after chorus. A song for men and women...for what man has not loved as she phrases it and been left aching. And what woman has not trailed men in the wake of her freedom...
