Ragnar's armor is flashier, but I doubt he made it himself. Iorek's, on the other hand, is special to him. It has seen him through many battles and has the scratches to prove it. The difference between their armors reflects the difference between them in terms of personality and character.

The show does a lot of things better then the film but the bear fight was not one of them. They have the armor, they focus on the badass fight rather then on Lyra’s face, and of course “Is that AAAALLLL!!!”
