My solar is paid for and past the break even point it nets me a savings of $4200 a year. At the time I bought the solar I expected I could get twice the ROI if I put the money in the market but viewed the expense more like a guaranteed bond. Turned out to be a great investment took 1/2 as long as I projected because electric rates went crazy

This is my fifth year after retirement. I’ve been following the 4% rule thing I saw on a KZbin channel, but this isn’t really how hard I expected things to be. After I cashed out a lump sum, I still have about $760k left, but at this rate, and with how the market is (we were putting money away in an index fund), I’m starting to get worried.

Amazingly, you were able to save that much during your active years. Not a lot of people can save that much in a lifetime. But now you are retired and depend on your investment, it’s best you redistribute your capital, so you are not left devastated during a market crash or recovery. To simplify the process, you could allocate your resources with the help of a financial advisor.

@@DereksJosephs Yeah, I’m also closing in on retirement, and I have benefitted much from using a financial advisor. I didn’t start early, so I knew the compound interest of index fund investing would not work for me. Funny how I pulled in more profit than some of my peers who have been investing for many years.

If you truly have a large portfolio, then a year of expenses should be a small percentage of that. If you believe you can live off the 4% rule, are you truly losing out if you keep 4% out in case of an emergency? I understand that in the accumulation phase you want to maximize returns as much as possible. But in the grand scheme of things once your portfolio grows your emergency fund is inconsequential to your overall investment portfolio.

I think KZbin business is better done part time over a long period of time rather than full time over a short period of time. It can take years for KZbin channels to grow. While growing a channel think of developing a product you can sell so you can make money from the channel faster without needing to make add revenue.

Bitcoin may protect against inflation, but in doing that it is very susceptible to inflation's darker and more evil twin: deflation. As the economy grows, more money is needed, otherwise money continues to grow in value, people start hoarding, reduce spending, thus crippling the economy. In a world where Bitcoin replaces all other currencies, those holding it will control the money supply. This kills the whole "for the good of the people" argument.

I don't think it is unreasonable to hold a 5% or 10% cyrto portfolio as it has increased in value a lot its worse year it only went up 20% I a sorry but an investment worst year going up 20% is very good I do not know what crazy stocks your buying where 20% is garbage but that is its worst annual return. It has increased in value I also don't think you must invest in either index funds or cryto you make a complete False dilemma statement by saying cryto investors have to think the west will fall or the usa will fail. Both general stocks and bitcoin can and both currently have increased in value overall so I am not sure where you are getting this nonsense from

Living off handyman income and his wife's income doesn't sound like fire to me. It sounds like self-employment or regular employment. Many fire proponents suggest they have achieved a hassle free retirement and are living off the income from investments. This means they can do absolutely nothing and live comfortably off savings. Very few people that I know are so situated. They are often just one major stock market collapse, or a major health event, or just the inherent costs from old age (such as long term care), from facing a major problem.

Seems like you feel that for bitcoin to "succeed" it needs to become a common currency like the dollar or Euro. I would agree that is unlikely for the reasons you noted. Where I think bitcoin could succeed and frankly has succeeded is as a store of wealth and a means of securely transferring wealth in a digital age. I don't think bitcoin's appreciation in value is just speculative fervor. It reflects a practical value in holding and preserving wealth in lieu of buying gold or assets like real estate. Saylor and Breedlove explain this value very well.

If you are just coming up, one of the things that can’t be ignored about almost all of these stories is that every one of these people put in major sweat early on to get there. Often at moderate paying jobs, blue-collar jobs, they paid their dues. They didn’t look for shortcuts and honestly, I think that that’s what builds the character to be able to do what they did in the next phases. People want to skip part one, but the grind is what builds the attitude and desire to get out of the rat race eventually. My two cents

Hey Scott and Mindy -- here's the nerdy math on starting a business, which relies on the binomial distribution. Assuming that 90% of businesses fail, and assuming that you start 10 businesses, you'd have a 65.1% chance that one or more of those businesses would be successful. In reality, however, your chances of success would almost certainly be higher, since you'd learn from your failures and thereby improve your odds of succeeding on the next attempt. 🤓

One can invest in, say, a share of Proctor and Gamble and received steady payments for years ( as I have). One can invest in real estate and received payments for years ( as I have). One can purchase crypto and participate in a fanciful crapshoot and hope that, someday, someone will purchase their coins at a higher price. To suggest one is "investing" in crypto is like saying buying a bag of Cheetos is like investing in Kellogg stock. I am totally supportive of anyone who wants to buy crypto and I wish them all the best of luck. But no matter how you slice it, scarcity, in and of itself, is a flawed reason to buy BTC. It is actually meaningless.

He says he understands bitcoin but seems to be missing the point about Bitcoin being digital gold. The dollar doesn't have to collapse or be replaced by BTC for it to turn into a 10million dollar + asset, in the same way that Gold has long coexisted with fiat. They are actually complementary to each other in that Gold (in this case BTC) fortifies the legitimacy of fiat. Also, Fiat is being pored into BTC which is what is inflating its value. This will not end so long that we continue to print money.

Bitcoin has a crisis of security, gold does not. Bitcoin relies on miners remaining profitable. In each epoch, miners need lower and lower price of electricity (now about 0.05$ / kWh). Eventually, all mining will be centralised and thus Bitcoin ledger will become a ledger of a bank
