Your videos are fantastic! Videos on formwork and different approaches to joins and hemping across various days would be great for a future video. I haven't seen anyone cover that in detail in video or text. Do you have any advice / direction on vertical joins - hempcrete to hempcrete? I'm an owner-builder here and we'd like to do a full room wall in one day for aesthetics., i.e. focus on going up not around as quickly as possible. We won't render inside. We are thinking of putting in vertical formwork and doing the hemping in 'bays'/sections, with joints hidden behind internal walls (eg. section 1 and section 2 in image). Externally, joints would be covered with render. Is there any issue with this? I imagine we could get some shrinkage, and have the 2 hemp walls (eg. section 1 and section 2 in blue text) move away from each other since there's no interlocking.
@hempireua19 күн бұрын
If you are joining to sections, you have to make sure that there are some interlocking connections to reduce thermal bridging.

you can, but it might affect the thermal performance. Hemp is the best biomass for this. But, yes, you can do it.

Oh yes. Hemp in Finland is still relatably high in price. Im thinking about testing with a mix of wood chip, hemp chip and bog peat. Peat has great moisture absorbance value also sucks in bad odor, gases, fumes etc.

Just a few questions first how do you do the rough framing for windows and doorways in preparation for adding the hemp: lime mix? Second, am I correct that you can pour a perimeter concrete foundation wall, add a spacer membrane, and go from there? Third, which is easier a loose mix as seen here vs hemp bricks? and finally is this method easier than rammed earth or CEB and how does the cost compare?
@hempireua2 ай бұрын
Framing - just make a timber frame to the thickness of material ( if the hempcrete is 12 inch, than make a 12 inch thick frame) around the doors and windows. on this video its quite clear where we put temporary formwork around the openings. Foundation is separated by a membrane - that is correct. i like onsite casting better method since we dont compact the middle of the mix, but only the edges of the insulation making hempcrete less dense in the middle and therefore more energy efficient. Blocks are good for projects where you are limited by the weather. Onsite casting can happen only if temperature is +5 C or higher. Its much easier than rammed earth, and much quicker. Density of hempcrete once it is cured 250 kg/m3. Rammed earth so much more labour intensive...

Can you please tell me if it is mandatory to ONLY USE the shiv(e) ?? What kind of binder do you use ? "Normal" cement (?) Do you use also a part lime in the mixture ?? Would love to hear the "exact" used materials. I'm planning on making our own hempcrete house in about 1 or 2 years, that is why
@hempireua6 ай бұрын
Thank you for your feedback, it was a bit too loud. That will be removed in future videos. Hemp hurds can contain fibers up to 10%, no more. So a bit of fiber is ok. We use hydrated lime in our binder. The exact proportion by weight: 1 part water, 1.5 parts hydrated lime binder , 2 parts water

Exactly what type of lime did use to mix with the hemp hurds, natural hydraulic lime, what was the binder, specifically? NHL 5, NHL 3.5. No one ever talks about the ingredients of the mix! If I want to build a house with hempcrete walls what do I need to achieve that?
@hempireua2 ай бұрын
No hydraulic lime. In our recipe its hydrated lime 80% and minerals. So basically its mostly hydrated lime. Companies can have their IP, which is completely normal in different industries. Formulation always depends on different tasks. Some add more NHL to make blocks cure faster, some have special mix for spraying hempcrete. Others focus in-situ casting so they can remove formwork faster.

Love this project and your clear descriptions. One question I have, is the lime render...if you coate the building in lime, would the wood structure - studs and beams - not shrink and expand with the humidity, thus cracking the lime render on top of it? Over time, I wonder if this would be a problem. Many thanks for sharing this and your expertise...
@hempireua9 ай бұрын
You need to install a mesh , otherwise it’s going to crack. Sometimes even two layers. First mesh goes right on the scratch coat and then the second goes right before the final coat of plaster.

@@hempireua so you are not using pure lime as the binder ? In Australia at the moment only one company claims to have building code approval with their hempcrete lime and their price is ~ high. thanks for posting . good logic in your building method although i wish i could do lower labour input with shotcrete method to move material from the ribbon mixer to the wall void.
