Interesting history lesson. I have several fine artists in the family and have struggled with the terms. Do I call myself a metalsmith, an artist, an enamelist? I primarily make jewelry, but can't really claim to be a "jeweler" with no formal education in the field. All of this terminology just contributed to imposter syndrome that, because I am mostly self taught, I already struggled with. I've had people say things like "Are you going to play in your studio?" Play, that term used to upset me because to me it was my work, but I get paid for "playing" every day in my home studio in beautiful rural Vermont surrounded by trees & wildlife. Your story helped me realize that the terminology has nothing to do with my abilities. I love what I do and regardless of what others may call me, I'm just going to keep playing. Thank you!

Is it actually possible to cut 316L stainless steel with a jewelers saw? i've tried with two different types of blades without any success. Also, is there any solution to treat copper rings with that prevents them from corrosion while being safe for frequent skin contant?

Or maybe I should pull it out of the mold earlier? Im listening right now to you talking about shrinking and bowing, so maybe the bubbles are happening as the front of the design is obviously drying last?
@DrummerArtificerStudios
@DrummerArtificerStudios Жыл бұрын
I’d try removing it from the mold earlier, it could be the bubbles are forming either from it shrinking at different rates or from air getting trapped between the foam and mold as it dries

If using a silicone mold for clay foam: if you get tiny bubbles...any idea to eliminate them? I have a heat gun. (Im doing filigree designs. Intricate scrolling detail) and the details are great, but it gets bubbles as it dries. Would heat while still wet or in the process of drying it help? Because iVe tried adding drops of water before working the clay. Ive tried pressing harder. Weights on top. Ive also tried waiting longer for it to cure. No luck. And I cant sand as Id lose the detail =/ Thank you! 😊

Hi ! Thank you so much for your video, I do have one question 😊 while im (In case if its important, i'm filing with a big vallorbe file G2, but it makes a horrible sound and its very difficult, almost impossible to file with it so i use the sanding paper, van you please help me to understand what im doing wrong? (curently using on a 1mm board some 0/3 saw blandes)
@DrummerArtificerStudios
@DrummerArtificerStudios Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting, my guess would be that the file you are using has too large of a tooth to it. You probably should switch to a finer file and make sure the piece you are trying to file is firmly pressed against a hard surface to help absorb any excess vibrations.

thxs so much for this. When you were flaring the eyelet manually, could I use a countersink deburring drill bit and a drill press to slowly flare it like you did?( since I don't have your excellent manual skills to make it as even) lol Thx again for the very clear explaination♥☻☺
@DrummerArtificerStudios
@DrummerArtificerStudios 2 жыл бұрын
The deburring bit might cause too much damage to the tube, you could try a tool for flaring small copper tubing for fridge and water fountain water lines. You can find it in the plumbing section if most hardware stores

@@DrummerArtificerStudios Could you give me a name or a link since I've tried looking for such thing and no dice and because I'm working with tubes that are 3-6mm inner diameter or smaller, all those parts are way too large for it. thx again :) I also wonder if I can put a dabbing punch in the drill press and just very very slowly shape the open end... any thoughts? thx again ♥☻☺

I was told by a professional artist (Painter)..."you are not really an artist, you are a highly skilled craftswoman". Although I have a great deal of respect for that person, his comment was instrumental in causing a loss of confidence. I have spent a great deal of my adult life learning and mastering several genres of artistic endeavour, and have come to the conclusion that I make art, therefore I am an Artist, a mixed media artist. However Articifer or Artificer, I like very much too! Thanks...follow your dreams!

Great! Thank you very much! And if I want to put a tube between both plates around the rivet? Do I do the same with the tube in-between - will it hold well enough? Thank you very much! 🔥
@DrummerArtificerStudios
@DrummerArtificerStudios 3 жыл бұрын
To use a tube as a spacer between plates with a standard rivet you would do all the steps exactly the same. The tube simply makes it so you are putting a river in a “thicker” piece of metal. For practical purposes it is best for the tube to be just large enough for your river material to slid into it but you are not limited, the tube can be larger. You just run a chance of the spacer moving around on you as you set the rivet. It is also possible to use a tube spacer with the tube rivet. For either you just want to make sure that the spacer cannot pass through the hole drilled for the rivet. I will work on putting together a video for this for better explanation.

I believe you can remoisten the clay in the container to keep it from drying out.
@DrummerArtificerStudios
@DrummerArtificerStudios 3 жыл бұрын
It may be possible but you have to be careful with how much water is put in. I know that exposure to too much water or prolonged exposure will actually dissolve and liquify the clay completely.
