What I found interesting to 'catch' fake polyglots in the act, is to introduce them to an extremely distinct or indistinguishable language that can only be accessed through resources like family relations. I tried this on a narcissist in my high school who had the intent of learning languages to be a jerk and cause dramas and rumors in my cohort, and told him to learn my mother's mother tongue, Tuwali. Though isn't endangered, but is hard to access through the internet or books. And he just used the most broken, obsolete and outdated version of the language that he found from online resources. Most of the stunt he tried to pull was just broken grammar and loan words from Ilocano. My observation is: if someone is truly trying to inspire you to learn languages, especially via online platforms like KZbin, their intention is meant to inspire. Not to hog you into buying their 'whatever' subscription, or the suspicious use of repeated textbook phrases. And if a so called proclaimed polyglot can't even paraphrase what they're saying in another language, then it should become clear that they're faking hard affff.

i think that learning the bare minimum of a bunch of languages to maybe have a short conversation in public for a video is cool, but the issue is obviously when they say they speak it implying theyre fluent even if they dont specifically say that theyre fluent

But I draw the line at claiming to speak a language that you're really very much beginner in - you know full well when someone says someone "speaks a language" they DON'T mean thy have a 100 word vocabulary and started last month. They MEAN, typically, basic proficiency, which would be on the order of a B2 level for European languages or HSK4 to 5 for Chinese. If you only know how to say "hi, my name is John, I live in America, I like pizza and apples, where is the bathroom, thanks, goodbye", sorry, but that's NOT what people mean and it's a lie, therefore, to mislead beginners into thinking you are better than you are. You MUST be able to hold a conversation to be telling the truth when you say you can "speak" a language. Anything less is at BEST a massive exaggeration.

Sometimes I am really sick of some people having arguments about this topic. Let us not forget that we speak a language because we want to communicate to people. Nowadays, I see that people are very, very concerned on things like: "you have an accent", "this is not the way we say it in x country (but deep inside they understood what people meant to say)", "no, the correct pronunciation is... (but the so called mistake is almost imperceptible)." Many people from many countries speak at least 2 local languages and many of them also know English. Many Indians can surprise us when we see that they speak Hindi, Marathi, Tamil... Many people from Central Asia speak their native language, Russian, and many of them speak Turkish too. Why would it be uncommon or a surprise to see someone claiming to speak 4 or 5 or 6 languages? There are scammers, hundred percent sure of that, but also... Come on, many people speak more than 3 languages hahaha

Well, definitely if it is the only focus while learning a language - it won't make one eloquent speaker n brilliant writer in target language. Sure. At the same time there is such subtle thing like "indirect learning" - very effective, to my mind. It' when you DO smth with the stuff to learn - e,g. take notes, colour them, cut out, put on the wall, change the exposition next day, etc. In other words you present the stuff to your brain in different formats ( including audio, kinestetic, visual). This way the brain is getting familiar with the stuff - without being under pressure of the necessity of hard memorising. As where is pressure - there is fight against it. 🤗 So, to sum up - note taking, especially "gorgeous"😊, can make some humble contribution to learning or even rather to acquisition process.

Greetings Alex. First timer here: this came up in my recommendations today. You've reminded me of another somewhat warped individual who used to put out videos denigrating other language-fanciers. It took me a while to remember his name, which was Christophe Clugston. Anyone remember him? His particular bêtes noires were Steve and Benny. By his own account he was a professional academic with a research qualification but his videos were both ridiculous and rather unsettling, probably on account of his other great passion which was Thai kickboxing. One got the distinct impression that he'd been kicked in the head once too often. I just checked and there are a few of his language and linguistics videos still knocking around, all over ten years old now. Occasionally his name used to come up in forum discussions and nobody could find any reference to him or any published work of his in academic journals. P.S. Thank you for alerting me to the correct pronunciation of Botes. I too have been saying Boats. My defence is that I have a very common Flemish surname which almost nobody pronounces or spells correctly, and the unwritten rule is that if you've got a name which everyone gets wrong then you're allowed to mangle other people's names with impunity.

I grew up speaking Spanish in my household because my grandma didn’t allow us to speak English at home but of course I would speak English outside of my household… my Spanish was bad but got a bit better getting older with the grammar. Later my gma died and I stopped speaking the language. Irony, I moved to Mexico and my Spanish worsened because I was too embarrassed to speak my shitty Spanish to anyone. I just want to go back to speaking Spanish fr because it’s my blood language main and it hurts walking this earth not being able to speak to my people properly honestly 😭😭💀
