What I found interesting to 'catch' fake polyglots in the act, is to introduce them to an extremely distinct or indistinguishable language that can only be accessed through resources like family relations. I tried this on a narcissist in my high school who had the intent of learning languages to be a jerk and cause dramas and rumors in my cohort, and told him to learn my mother's mother tongue, Tuwali. Though isn't endangered, but is hard to access through the internet or books. And he just used the most broken, obsolete and outdated version of the language that he found from online resources. Most of the stunt he tried to pull was just broken grammar and loan words from Ilocano. My observation is: if someone is truly trying to inspire you to learn languages, especially via online platforms like KZbin, their intention is meant to inspire. Not to hog you into buying their 'whatever' subscription, or the suspicious use of repeated textbook phrases. And if a so called proclaimed polyglot can't even paraphrase what they're saying in another language, then it should become clear that they're faking hard affff.

Usable video! The book by Yuriy Ivantsiv “ Polyglot Notes. Practical Tips for Learning Foreign Language” had a profound impact on me, opening new horizons of understanding the diversity of languages and cultures. The author's ideas that learning foreign languages not only broadens one's horizons but also contributes to spiritual development became a real revelation for me. I realized that every language is not just a system of signs, but a whole world with its history, traditions and way of life. Thanks to this book, I learned to see language learning as a path to self-discovery and a deeper understanding of others, which in turn enriched my worldview. Inspired by Ivantsiv's approach, I became more conscious of my learning, integrating the author's practical advice into my daily life. This opened up opportunities for me not only to improve my language skills, but also to develop a personal philosophy based on mutual understanding and empathy. Immersing myself in languages has allowed me to see the world from different angles and realize the importance of cultural exchange, which has been the foundation for my spiritual growth. Reading this book and applying its advice has helped me to become a more open and tolerant person who seeks harmony in my relationships with others.

i think that learning the bare minimum of a bunch of languages to maybe have a short conversation in public for a video is cool, but the issue is obviously when they say they speak it implying theyre fluent even if they dont specifically say that theyre fluent
@kalevipoeg69163 ай бұрын
Applaud efforts? Maybe. But I draw the line at claiming to speak a language that you're really very much beginner in - you know full well when someone says someone "speaks a language" they DON'T mean thy have a 100 word vocabulary and started last month. They MEAN, typically, basic proficiency, which would be on the order of a B2 level for European languages or HSK4 to 5 for Chinese. If you only know how to say "hi, my name is John, I live in America, I like pizza and apples, where is the bathroom, thanks, goodbye", sorry, but that's NOT what people mean and it's a lie, therefore, to mislead beginners into thinking you are better than you are. You MUST be able to hold a conversation to be telling the truth when you say you can "speak" a language. Anything less is at BEST a massive exaggeration.

“There’s no gain to lying” Are you that naive? 🤔 Also, he’s clearly being a dick by harassing the first guy into speaking different languages live on his stream, but the guy just had to do so, and he would have shut his mouth 🤷🏻♂️ We can say he did the mature thing by responding calmly and kindly, but he’s also enabling the other guy to pursue his harassment, while in the meantime leaving the possibility lingering that he actually really is a fake polyglot I also disagree with your take on polyglots reading from scripts Of course there’s nothing wrong about having notes, but still, first that has norhing to do with acting, that comparison makes no sens, and even if it would, it would be more detrimental to your point than beneficial, because polyglots are not actors, and they are not acting when they do a live stream or even a youtube video And also, you can very easily read “fluently” a language that you are familiar with, even if you can’t actually speak it I can’t speak Italian, but I am familiar with the language, and I can speak French and Spanish fluently, and with that, I can very easily read Italian with a decent accent and decent pronunciation, and trick people into believing I can speak fluently, even if I only understand 20% of what I am reading So his point is valid His methods and mindset are questionable, but his goal makes sens: There are a lot of fake polyglots out there scamming people, and he is right to confront them The only thing your video does is giving me the feeling that you are actually trying to protect fake polyglots 🤷🏻♂️

2:08 Hi guys can you explain what "on the nose" mean in this context? I got really curious about this idiom, but I can't understand the meaning. Goggle says "If something is on the nose, it is exact or precise", and I don't understand what he means. Thanks for help <3

He said "on the nose" because the game is straight up telling him that he will have to do some language learning to progress in the game. Obviously, the whole point of the game is for language learning, so the game blatantly saying that is why he said it was on the nose.

Sometimes I am really sick of some people having arguments about this topic. Let us not forget that we speak a language because we want to communicate to people. Nowadays, I see that people are very, very concerned on things like: "you have an accent", "this is not the way we say it in x country (but deep inside they understood what people meant to say)", "no, the correct pronunciation is... (but the so called mistake is almost imperceptible)." Many people from many countries speak at least 2 local languages and many of them also know English. Many Indians can surprise us when we see that they speak Hindi, Marathi, Tamil... Many people from Central Asia speak their native language, Russian, and many of them speak Turkish too. Why would it be uncommon or a surprise to see someone claiming to speak 4 or 5 or 6 languages? There are scammers, hundred percent sure of that, but also... Come on, many people speak more than 3 languages hahaha

"Gorgeous note taking" - I like smth like that😊 Funny but caused a little protest in my mind. Well, definitely if it is the only focus while learning a language - it won't make one eloquent speaker n brilliant writer in target language. Sure. At the same time there is such subtle thing like "indirect learning" - very effective, to my mind. It' when you DO smth with the stuff to learn - e,g. take notes, colour them, cut out, put on the wall, change the exposition next day, etc. In other words you present the stuff to your brain in different formats ( including audio, kinestetic, visual). This way the brain is getting familiar with the stuff - without being under pressure of the necessity of hard memorising. As where is pressure - there is fight against it. 🤗 So, to sum up - note taking, especially "gorgeous"😊, can make some humble contribution to learning or even rather to acquisition process.

This person seems a bit crazed. However, it's a bad start with you and Colelangs refuting it. What's the point in pretending you know all these languages? Oh I don't know. It's a whole business model online. Maybe not having to work at the local supermarket. The answer is obvious and the performative disbelief is silly and a little suspicious. Yes people do make things up on the internet to get attention. And sometimes on the internet attention is money.
@gregmumbai3335 ай бұрын
Your arguments are not good. Obviously people write scripts. But you know what he is getting at. If you claim to be proficient in a language you should be conversationally fluent. Thus able to speak the language without detailed prompts. It is obviously much easier to find phrases or even a speech and practice reciting it. To your acting example there are many actors who speak lines in a foreign language that they don't understand and would not be able to hold a similar conversation because they have been taught wrote recitation. Does that mean that because you have a script that you are a scammer? Of course not. It is also a skill which requires learning but it is not the same as being fluent in a language. It's a red flag when people take the most shallow possible version of an argument and refute that.

Because they are not at professional levels. Majority are self taught beginner's, that can fool ignorant people. An example was Mike Campbell for a lengthy period of time had others claim he was fluent in over 10 languages and conversational in about 100. It was when languagejones called him out indirectly, that Mike removed all of the outrageous titles on his banner and description. Mike then blamed it all on his marketing department.

Greetings Alex. First timer here: this came up in my recommendations today. You've reminded me of another somewhat warped individual who used to put out videos denigrating other language-fanciers. It took me a while to remember his name, which was Christophe Clugston. Anyone remember him? His particular bêtes noires were Steve and Benny. By his own account he was a professional academic with a research qualification but his videos were both ridiculous and rather unsettling, probably on account of his other great passion which was Thai kickboxing. One got the distinct impression that he'd been kicked in the head once too often. I just checked and there are a few of his language and linguistics videos still knocking around, all over ten years old now. Occasionally his name used to come up in forum discussions and nobody could find any reference to him or any published work of his in academic journals. P.S. Thank you for alerting me to the correct pronunciation of Botes. I too have been saying Boats. My defence is that I have a very common Flemish surname which almost nobody pronounces or spells correctly, and the unwritten rule is that if you've got a name which everyone gets wrong then you're allowed to mangle other people's names with impunity.

Later my gma died and I stopped speaking the language. Irony, I moved to Mexico and my Spanish worsened because I was too embarrassed to speak my shitty Spanish to anyone.
