I bought one two years ago because i really wanted a lathe and ive never seen people so divided on something like this. You either love it or hate it and a lot of the hate is people expecting this lathe to do production lathe cuts. I got a different lathe because I need to make more accurate parts and more workspace. If you dont have a lathe and want one you should buy a 109 but you will spend just as much time fixing/retuning it as you will doing actual work. It's an 80 year old machine.

I enjoyed the video and thought it was well put together for a newcomer to producing videos. As always there are more than one way to do things and people are quick to point that out. You came up with 8 serviceable T nuts which is wat you set out to do so well done you.

... I was a Class A engine lathe machinist... Long retired now, but couldn't pass up a 109 at the swap meet today, June of '22 ... So, your my 2nd flick in the list of over 50 on the 109... And you just showed me, using the forward and reverse on the thread cutting gears to move the cross feed under power, or to release it, and just pull... Gonna watch yours again... ... I really only have three pulleys I'd like to turn out... So let's hope I don't 'scrap' too many... Ha-Ha ...

I found that by using fixturing clamps on the base of my vise rather than the stock bolts with washers in the slots, it stays trammed when I tighten it down. I really like your atlas mill, theres one for sale near me and i’m trying to justify buying it. I always take up expensive hobbies, i swear i could spend thousands even if i took up writing poetry.

Hi there , Steve here, came a cross your post and see that your power table feed is out of order. Well I got me Atlas Mill also, And I found if one does not lock down the lead screw, bad things happen. Tryen to find replacement some what most not so good. So I spent the next 8 months and you gessed it. Fixed my mill and made a few extra which I gave away. I'm seeing that there are few more in need, rite now I'm not set up and it does take some time. Getting paid for the time to make a set, If I made and sold one set I be a rich. So I'm putting a feeler out just to see, if gearing back up, got the tooling, in a day or two I could be back on track. So let me know, Thank You for your time.

Only problem I see with atlas horizontal mills is the only 5/8 inch arbor shaft, Sheldon used a 7/8 and really makes a difference in less chatter

I wanted a Atlas horizontal mill to make my 12 and 6 inch atlas lathes but came across a Sheldon Vernon instead it's a heavy beast but I couldn't beat the price and it's in great condition looks hardly used when I took it apart as I do with all my machines and restore them, have restored and sold 6 atlas lathes as people realize that buying vintage is the best way to buy

15:55 It's been bothering me for a while but it looks like your arbor spacers are clamping the cutters by their cutting surfaces ! I totally approve of large diameter spacers as it adds significant rigidity to the arbor but they should match the mounting/clamping faces on the cutters.

Slow down your tapping speed.
@jackwalsh75494 жыл бұрын
An easier order of operation would be: center drill all holes, drill all holes, then tap all holes. Will save a lot of table up and down movement and a lot of time.

I would have marked out my individual T nuts on the piece, then drilled the hole for each and bolted the piece directly to the table- a lot more stable.

I've found that if I use a long pry bar, I have an easier time moving the belts to different positions. That said, I really like your VFD and bigger motor, and I will probably be moving in that direction; if only to add some more power on the fly.

I had modified pulley with gear to accept 3/4 spindle instead,the front threaded end is 3/4x16tpi and it would accept MT1 arbors..Pulley and gear reduction drive both been modified to accept 3/4 spindle,it also got brass bushings/bearings installed...Same would go with standard pulley,than large size holes would be drilled in headstock front hole 26.3mm and rear 24.3mm..Ones bushings set spindle would fit correctly through,spindle gear hole enlarged for 3/4 and goes on spindle very firmly..This is the largest maximum size spindle that would work on model 109 lathe,it bit tricky to do such precision jobs of modification but not impossible..All gear reduction drive and geared pulley would permit installation of brass bushings that support 3/4 spindle..I also have plan how to build gear box assembly and modify lead screw to make it all fit and aligned however certain minor modifications to bed required.By making long lead screw and attach 2 beds together lathe bed become extended over 55" long which can allow deep drilling procedure...So there you go previously sought Craftsman/Sears 109 lathe transformed into ultimate lathe that can be upgraded to accept CNC parameters with further upgrade.....

Have the same Mill,,,,mine was from a fellow he had for personal use,,don't think he used it much,,,I mounted the scale on the front of the table,,used the channels and set it out a bit,,,doesn't interfere with anything,,,extended the locking lever out just a bit. The back was a issue because of the Y travel as you know. Love this old mill,,,you would think it was new. Like to put that motor on it ,,,cool idea with the variable drive.
