I bought one two years ago because i really wanted a lathe and ive never seen people so divided on something like this. You either love it or hate it and a lot of the hate is people expecting this lathe to do production lathe cuts. I got a different lathe because I need to make more accurate parts and more workspace. If you dont have a lathe and want one you should buy a 109 but you will spend just as much time fixing/retuning it as you will doing actual work. It's an 80 year old machine.

... I was a Class A engine lathe machinist... Long retired now, but couldn't pass up a 109 at the swap meet today, June of '22 ... So, your my 2nd flick in the list of over 50 on the 109... And you just showed me, using the forward and reverse on the thread cutting gears to move the cross feed under power, or to release it, and just pull... Gonna watch yours again... ... I really only have three pulleys I'd like to turn out... So let's hope I don't 'scrap' too many... Ha-Ha ...

Thanks for the video. Just picked up the same lathe today. Looks to be a nice little machine for hobby use, which is exactly what I need. Nothing special or large. Wow though, what snobs are out there on the lathe forums.. If you don't have at least a 9" South Bend I guess you don't count. Again Thanks for this informative video for the small lathe owners.,.

I had modified pulley with gear to accept 3/4 spindle instead,the front threaded end is 3/4x16tpi and it would accept MT1 arbors..Pulley and gear reduction drive both been modified to accept 3/4 spindle,it also got brass bushings/bearings installed...Same would go with standard pulley,than large size holes would be drilled in headstock front hole 26.3mm and rear 24.3mm..Ones bushings set spindle would fit correctly through,spindle gear hole enlarged for 3/4 and goes on spindle very firmly..This is the largest maximum size spindle that would work on model 109 lathe,it bit tricky to do such precision jobs of modification but not impossible..All gear reduction drive and geared pulley would permit installation of brass bushings that support 3/4 spindle..I also have plan how to build gear box assembly and modify lead screw to make it all fit and aligned however certain minor modifications to bed required.By making long lead screw and attach 2 beds together lathe bed become extended over 55" long which can allow deep drilling procedure...So there you go previously sought Craftsman/Sears 109 lathe transformed into ultimate lathe that can be upgraded to accept CNC parameters with further upgrade.....

I used my father's 109 fifty years ago. My brother recently found it, and gave it to me. The spindle must have 0.020" slop! I'll machine a new adjustable bushing and scrape the ways, and give it a good paint job.

What type of oil can I lube the bearings with
@deafdeadfishfloating
@deafdeadfishfloating 7 жыл бұрын
Which bearings? This device is not 'picky,' cheapest 30 wt is fine. It's best to keep a 'light oil' on the whole damn thing in most shop environments IMHO... at least I do - as my shop isn't the driest in the world... so I simply bring a spray can of coconut oil out of my kitchen, and lightly spray the the bed and chuck each fall.

+Lance Bender Home Shop Supply (www.homeshopsupply.com/upgrades.html) has some parts. Other than that, eBay is really your best bet unless you can find one for parts.

I'm having issues with the chuck. I'd like to replace it but i can't get it to screw off because it spins with the shaft. do you know if there is any lock on it or not ?
@ChipMaker1066
@ChipMaker1066 8 жыл бұрын
There's no spindle lock. The safest way to remove the chuck is to make a wrench that will hold the end gear of the spindle. Take a look at www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/south-bend-lathes/how-remove-stuck-chuck-tutorial-165028/ for details. The one shown there is made from aluminum, but a block of hardwood would probably work fine on a small lathe like the 109

Guess what, I got same type of lathe as well... I self made inner spindle plate that hold 3 planetary 36 theeth gears... Original is zink alloy mine is steel construction,first I get annual gear drum than pulley with central sun gear.. Becouse of unavailability of inner spindle plate I was forced to build one myself,first I torch cut exact thickness plate and grind it,than I use die grinder to make groove that aligns with drum gear,after that bushing been acquired that's precisely enters into drum and after that I align plate and bushing while in drum than tagged by mig welder which after all completely weld.. The 6 aperture grooves was made before bushing was weld on plate,after everything been done I made axles for 3 gears out of wiper motor spindle plates,they been cutted down and insert into holes than after proper alignment they been spot weld onto plate... The axles about little bigger than 1/4 and bushings for gears exact 1/2,so far I only got one gear with 36 theeth and every side aligns properly and aligns with center pulley gear... More likely or less those would be an spare parts, I also acquired complete head stock with complete gear drive assembly so it wont hurt to have spare parts... However one thing noticed, There is significant differences between craftsman and sears head stock versions,sears version is wider head stock and takes some space of whole lathe bed... There is also differences in spindle and pulley construction as well while one model got gear drive assembly and other doesn't.. And final differences in spindles there is 1/2 threading which standart chuck threading and 3/4 thread which would recquires different back plate for chuck.... I bought Chinese version of 3 inches chuck among with self made back plate for 1/2 thread of spindle... In addition I also got standart 4 jaws individual adjusting of jaws,the selfcentered 3 jaw chuck also got reversed jaws set as well while original Craftsman/Sears or Dunlap doesn't have those included... I got standart tool post and also universal type tool post as well... The only things I don't have for this lathe is steady rest and following rest..... This is major disadvantage of 109 models..

@ChipMaker1066
@ChipMaker1066 9 жыл бұрын
+dantheman1998 I suppose you could machine about any material you want as long as you have the right cutters and enough time, but these little lathes really aren't well suited to anything harder than brass or bronze and even then, taking more than a .010 cut is pushing things.
@deafdeadfishfloating
@deafdeadfishfloating 7 жыл бұрын
It's not the 'lathe' that determines how easily you machine cobalt, it's the nature of your cutting tool. Cobalt is 7-8; tungsten carbide is 8-9. Go for it with Tungsten Carbide; or diamond.
