Your cost per mile is incorrect! You did not include insurance cost, Maintenance, truck replacement etc.. So you actually did not make what you state. You should look up at Cost per mile calculator and use it. It will give you a better outlook at your true cost.

So, even if I have no intention of ever driving a semi tractor trailer rig, I still have to go through a truck driving school and test in a tractor trailer rig in order to be able to commercially pull a trailer with a pick up truck? What a bunch of BS. That had to be Buttgag's idea.

How much does RV transport pay?
@rvhotshot6010
@rvhotshot6010 Жыл бұрын
Hey James, it varies depending on the size of the RV and if you have a CDL or not. It can be anywhere from $1.60 to $2.30 a mile. Each company is different will have slightly different rates, but generally it is in this range. Real slow right now though, there isn't much chance to get into RV transport at this time.

Hope you do well. I was also with Dynamic Transport. Just started in June. All was good at the start. Then business slowed down. I was Struggling to make enough for my family. Business seemed like it was going pick up in December. Then my truck blew the motor. Had to hitch ride a Enterprise Truck Rental. (Golf Port Missippi truck rental has some awesome customer service and great deals) got a lease for dodge with a Cummins for cheap. I was able to deliver my rv trailer with this truck on time. Later I was able to my truck on a car trailer and get it up to Kentucky. Leasing a new truck started sounding like a decent deal compared to running my older 2006 dually. I ran another load for Dynamic Transport with the leased truck... Then 2 days after Christmas Dynamic Transport shuts their doors. Now I have a blown up truck, No job and 4 kids to feed. Wow. I feel that the owner of Dynamic never cared or thought about his employees or their families. It's going to take 2 weeks to signed on with Horizon Transport. Then how long would it take to get my 1st load after orientation? I had to return the lease truck Enterprise because I couldn't afford it with no guarantee when I would be able to get my 1st load with horizon. This has been a horrible situation for me trying to support my family. I'm now forced out off the hotshot RV transport business. I really enjoyed doing this job and the people I've meet. It was a amazing experience. I will be returning to my previous career.
@trailhunterusa

So sorry Ciial. I went through the orientation with Horizon the second week of this new year, and they had a load for everyone that went through. But, I haven't had a load since. All the RV manufacturers shut down the month of January, so there has been nothing. Horizon does have an opportunity to pick up "Reloads", but they have been very limited too. I wish you well my friend!

@@trailhunterusa Thank you for the up date. I'm glad that I didn't borrow money to keep leasing a truck. I went back to my old company for 12 years prior, wrenching for TA truck service. I've heard Horizon is also paying significantly less on loads compared to Dynamic, not sure if it's true? After I get caught back up in a couple months I think I'll try the RV transportation as a secondary job again

Hey Carrie, I could and I don't doubt they are making good money, but they are on the road constantly. I'm not wanting to be on the road that much. If you get leased on with a company, they are going to want you to run all the time. full time. If you want to go on your own, then there is a high cost for insurance and all the DOT crap you have to deal with. And your right the truck probably want sell anytime soon. But that is okay.

Look. Trucking is a hard gig. I am a 36 year veteran and when the dynamics change at any company you better be putting in applications elsewhere. Not only 35 years but 27 years as an Owner Operator. 8 years I spent jumping jobs from reefer to flats and OD to livestock to tankers to shows and padwrap and even dryvans pulling cheap frieght. In today's world I would be a job hopper. Back then I was just gaining experience. I know the difference between a smooth bore tank and baffled tank. I know a little of swinging meat compared to frozen meat compare to potential meat. Wanting to gain experience is not job hopping with companies that want idiots in the drivers seat. If trucking is your main source of income then apparently gaining experience in a corporate and governmental regulated world job hopping is frowned upon. Kudos to you with another main job not wanting to take out of other driver's mouths. But after about 10 years driving becomes a chore and ain't as fun as a road trip. But I have spent so much time away for certain milestones with family and friends on the road it ain't funny. But in the same flip of the coin I am not home most times. But maybe I'm different. I don't like the obligations just another load that I can turn a profit on. But RV transport multi haul is where the money is at. If only 1 at a time then the chassis is a waste unless you have a road master sleeper. Remember getting paid even a flat rate the company is making but 25 to 100 percent what they are paying you. That's how business works. And you sign the lease. As for company drivers, sorry but you are getting screwed too. But so so few total independant drivers out there now. That is truly sad. Both from the companies out there and our freakin' government and the ATA. But sorry for your losses though.

@@rvhotshot6010 You have a 3500 right? That will limit you on weight. But 3 campers is only what roughly 15 to 20 thousand pounds but don't forget the weight of the trailer. You will be just under over the max limits. A 4500 or 5500 would fit your needs. A 5500 with a Roadmaster with a trailer pulling a Hotshot load back close would be really good. I did in a big truck still di it from time to time but I have tarps, chains, four inch straps with two sets of ramps on a step deck. Good money when you can get a load back toward Indiana. Not so good sleeping in the back seat even if you coverted into a " sleeper". Then you have to have a class A CDL and even with hydraulic brakes you still have to have a Class A with restrictions. It's something to think about. But you can't pull the signs off and come back empty with a trailer and a 3500 with a flatbed and bumper weight you may not be able to do with a class 3 truck.

Thanks for the update was wondering about you. I'm kinda in the same boat Eric, I'm retired and only want to work part-time. I'm wondering if it's even feasible to operate under my own authority without hustling more than I want to considering the overhead costs of insurance, trailer investment etc. regardless of doing cars with a wedge trailer or regular flatbed hotshot. On the other hand, having recently received my CDL-A at the local community college I'm thinking more in terms of just biting the bullet for awhile as a full-time company semi driver somewhere until I figure this out for myself. CDL is burning a hole in my pocket and I have a F350 DRW...in any case, all my best and if you decide to stay in it after-all or not after looking into your own DOT number and authority I'd be interested in your thoughts. I got the CDL for RV transport, but now I'm thinking more outside that box.
