Is it at all possible for the cannibals' backstory to emerge in this adventure? Doesn't seem to be a great chance to do so as their existence is secret and they don't seem like keen historians themselves...
@RPGNookАй бұрын
There are ways to do it, you could introduce journals from their ancestors in the cave, they won't read but anyone in there could find that sort of thing. You could also have something found on the guys investigation files on his pc. If you want to tell it from the cannibals themselves I'd suggest a verbal history, with them acting out their story of where they came from and why they do what they do. A ritual storytelling during the butchery of one of the victims while the others look on could be very cool. It would be delusional and dramatical wrong but add enough clues to give a patchy history.

Addition: “I dare you mechanic” - grants an extra D10 of Luck Points. Everybody only gets it once until everyone has accepted a Dare, but then it can stack for another round. Extra Motivation: Roger stole the kids candy while they were trick-or-treating! The kids dared each other to follow him secretly and saw him go in. He came out empty-handed. The candy is in the house, and the clubhouse box of secrets is likely in there too! And maybe other things he stole too!!

This is one of the best breakdowns and rework suggestion videos I've found for this module! Well done and thank you! About to run it this Halloween and I loved your ideas. Would 100% support you if you began regularly posting again.

I ran this for a group last halloween, this year I'll do it again for another group. I don't mind the locking spell, I just treat it as something really weird that happened. For example if a character dies early I allow them to enter the house at a random time with another character. The door has no problem being opened from the outside, even though it's locked. I also used this when Roger's even meaner big brother showed up. I loved seeing the players run to the door in hopes of it being unlocked, only to be shocked that it was still impossible to open. I also allow the characters to show up before Roger to give them a few seconds to describe themselves and have a little role play scene. And then having Roger show up almost as a jump scare, to begin their harassment. I love playing that asshole 😂

Hey! Is ”Death Toll” (did I hear that correctly?) available for purchase somehow? Either as pdf or an actual printed book? I bought Down Darker Trails when it came out but haven’t got around to setting up a game until now, and I’d like to have some scenarios to start with before writing my own, and the two in the book will go by in no time.

The Roll20 Module may not come recommended, but the FoundryVTT one is pretty spectacular, as long as you also have the Core Rulebook module.
@RPGNook2 ай бұрын
I've heard a lot of good things about Foundry, its just a bit more complex and you need a good PC to run it, and a lot of players complain about that. Everything has its ups and downs. I'll check it out one day.

@RPGNook You don't need a good PC to run it. You can run it through a Browser the same way you can run Roll20. It is a little bit of a learning curve, but it's not really that bad.

Love your input! I’m running it this weekend. I like the idea of having the deep one hybrids around. Would you put two on the island? (One at the generator torturing Samuel and one by the boat) Or would that be too much in terms of difficulty with the younglings about?
@RPGNook4 ай бұрын
Probably a bit much, since there are so many younglings. You could have one of those instead looking after the boat. The idea was just to give some social interaction to the whole thing. Depends on how many players you have to be honest. But if you plan to add in the lighthouse keeper in the lamp room you could have him live and help out. Still trying to keep his gold even after all this, backstabbing the players to get away in the boat scot free with the gold while they deal with the monsters.

Players that get salty in games like this honestly ruin the fun for me. What's the point if playing if you aren't having fun, even if your character dies. I think it's hilarious when bad things happen to my characters.
@3ggh3adАй бұрын
in a survival horror game like aliens (or call of cthulhu), you should go in expecting that your character will either die, go insane, or suffer some horrible fate worse than death though GM should make that clear before game starts, so players know it will probably happen

I'm running this story as set in autumn, because 'deer hunting in summer' makes no sense to me. In a similar vein, I don't see hunters shooting at noises... Maybe the trigger happy pair are clueless urbanites? Wait, yes: Londoners visiting the U.S. Perfect.

@@RPGNook Often bemused how in the U.K. 'hunting' appears to be an activity reserved for the elite while here in the U.S. it's more identified with the lower classes. (At least actual hunting of wild game as distinct from blasting away at released farmed birds.) And that whole business of blundering around fields straggling after a mob of hounds? Surely it's the canines doing the hunting, not the horse-straddlers. What should it really be called? 'Dog-bothering'? 'Doggery'? Something like that...

@richardpain8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the video. I've watched a few of your scenario breakdowns and you highlight lots of the problems I've identified as well. I played this scenario as a player the other day and to me, it seemed that the zombie victim and the hitman was the most compelling thread to follow, not some band member who played the trumpet and had a gig at a funeral the next day. Going to the dead accountant's apartment and finding it a dead end was a let down, and then realising that the only other activity presented was going to a funeral of somebody the players don't know felt like being railroaded. Also this was the players first scenario and the keeper didn't provide a reason for the players to know each other or work together. I feel that the structure of the story and the motivations of the players could be improved a lot. Your idea of putting the players in jail beside the band, so they can learn more about the trumpet player is very clever. It paints the police as assholes and helps keep the story on track. Same with your suggestion of linking the players to the funeral, by making it the funeral of somebody they know, is very clever. Great suggestions. If I was the publisher of CoC, I'd want you to review the scenarios before publication.

Funny how experiences can vary from group to group. I played this as my first CoC game ever. We had a small group and I took some time to let the investigators (funny enough) "investigate" prior to moving to the woods. Ofc, I also prepped the group for a horror/mystery section and tried to get the most out of music and ambience (using candles, for example). I made sure that they had some connection or ambition that could drive them to investigate, get the bounty but save the girl too (in our case, one of the characters was a close friend and the other was too ambitious to just get a bounty and move on). Our game lasted good 5 hours. They started by getting some info (the handouts) from the local newspaper archives (one of the investigators was a young journalist) and library (the other a librarian!). Then, they took some time to buy some equipment (including guns). I also used that time to set a NPC that would be accompanying them (tho, at first, I used him to poke the players into a 20s mindset, as he was a little "sexist" and they both were girls doing what many would say was a "man's job".) After getting them together as one of the rescue groups, we really had a blast. So many foreshadowing and suspicion. The dreams and encounters that eventually made most of their group disband. At the end, only the players and that NPC carried on. They came across all the horrors and the supposedly stronger NPC (who was a "hunter" looking to cash in) was saved by the librarian when they battle the crazy kidnapper. Finally, they decided to go all the way to save the girl and both the dad and kid that got captured. It was intense and we had fun. The NPC didn't make it, as a last action he blew the hole place up with himself. All the girls made back to town but really affected by the whole experience. I loved that when we began the sun was still up irl, and it was way into the evening when we finished, so that also contributed to the mood and setting. Both players loved the adventure and we are running Blackwater Creek. As for me, this adventure really got me into CoC. I'd just advice you to prep your players by both letting them know that it's a horror game (so they keep "outworldly" jokes out of it) and that it is a mystery game, thus they need to actively investigate the mystery. Otherwise, they are gonna just run away and it was going to awfully terrible! (that doesn't mean they just need to kill themselves, but that their character's need to "want" to take part to.) Great Review! Keep it up.
