Great break down I hope your channel can attract more viewers because your videos are an awesome resource for GMs. I have one remark - you mentioned that you found the playable characters kind of bland. I just ran my first session and thought players brought the characters to life very well just following the instructions in the book. Hammer was a psychotic junkie, Iona always found excuses why he should stay back and then screamed like a little girl when the drone at Marshal's jumped him and Chaplain was wonderfully manipulative doing stuff behind other PC's backs. I think the problem is that Silva, Mason and Dante have a kind of straight-shooter soldier persona - if your players choose to play them, you will miss out on a lot of the interactions.

Hey! thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you had a good time with the scenario i liked it a lot. Destroyer uses dry cliched, 1 note personalities, that can be summed up as The Coward, or The Psycho, i agree, and there is just nothing beyond it, that is scooby doo levels of character creation. You can have a lot of fun with that, and sure the players are free to expand and give them that depth. But it shouldn't excuse the scenario for not providing it, and I'd have liked to have seen more, it would have lifted it a lot. I can put my 6 best players into the worst scenario ever written and it will be a great time. It doesn't make that scenario better. Just means that you have good players that can do more with less. All my players grumbled about this when asked to choose, and Chaplin was taken. As he is the only one with any backstory or care in his creation, the others are just window dressing.

@@RPGNook ok, I guess then I don't understand what you meant when you said the Aliens movie did it better - there was no more depth to Gorman, Vasques or Hicks - one line personality with at most one bullet point of character development. The rest is just actor's presentation of a simple trope...
@RPGNook3 жыл бұрын
@@stenlis I was talking more about the visuals of the marines in the film comparison, they all look the same. That was more about their appearance, where in the films they all look visual distinct, and aren't forgettable at a glance. In the film, the actors were allowed to customise their armour, graffiti it, and make it their own. Lived, in. But the film also portrays the characters better, and where on the surface they look 1 note, they grow in the film and show their depth. Hudson is a coward, but stands and fights like a boss, Hicks takes on the command he should have had and doesn't want. Gorman dies brave and wins the respect of Vasques in the end, after being an inexperienced rookie. He learns what soldiering is about, not the "by the book" sadly too late for all of them. They are still deeper than the PCs, and thats from an viewers point of view, what the cast might have knew about how to play their characters would have been a lot more. Their motivations, goals, wishes, dreams. That is what the player needs too.

Great and helpful summary. One mistake, though -- the formula that Ekford carries and the one that looks like a stimulant is the weaponized *2B* strain, not the original. The Medbay is the best way to remove Dante's Chestburster, but I can also having the original around and giving it a 1/3 chance of working.

Players that get salty in games like this honestly ruin the fun for me. What's the point if playing if you aren't having fun, even if your character dies. I think it's hilarious when bad things happen to my characters.
@3ggh3ad8 күн бұрын
in a survival horror game like aliens (or call of cthulhu), you should go in expecting that your character will either die, go insane, or suffer some horrible fate worse than death though GM should make that clear before game starts, so players know it will probably happen

The Roll20 Module may not come recommended, but the FoundryVTT one is pretty spectacular, as long as you also have the Core Rulebook module.
@RPGNook2 ай бұрын
I've heard a lot of good things about Foundry, its just a bit more complex and you need a good PC to run it, and a lot of players complain about that. Everything has its ups and downs. I'll check it out one day.
@Siryphas2 ай бұрын
@RPGNook You don't need a good PC to run it. You can run it through a Browser the same way you can run Roll20. It is a little bit of a learning curve, but it's not really that bad.

@RPGNook3 жыл бұрын
The problem is the andriod pregen is tied heavily to the story, but other than that, i'd definitely do it, especially if you have picked up the marine book, the expanded jobs are quite nice. If you do that, have Chaplin, the android as an NPC.
