Thanks for this list! I've never really considered Reality is Broken to be a Game Studies book, and I'm sure that lots of other people in the field feel the same. It's a popular science kind of book (not really a "studies" book in general). It's a great book and probably the one which really got me into thinking about serious games, with loads of great examples. But I don't think the aim of Game Studies is to proselytize about the benefits of games as a medium, or to argue for author's commercial practice.

@@gamecokben On the contrary, in situations where the marginalized need to fight to stay above water, imagined figureheads are an essential means to that. Like when Russia invaded Ukraine, there became an Urban Legend of the legendary fighter ace known as the Ghost of Kiev, that spooked fear amongst the Russians. Sure, it was all a tall tale, but it inspired hope and kept morale up during these dark times. Coty Craven making Susan Banks up is no different, a fixed point for everyone to rally around. Instead of condemning, we should all praise Coty for a heroic act of creativity, social service, and patriotism.

TL;DR: Gamers more often have depression and anxiety not 'because' they play games. But rather games are used as a coping method to socialize and interact without leaving their comfort zone.

Your paper states that participants were gathered via social media and authors personal and professional networks. What personal/professional networks were specifically utilized? Could you share what that looked like? How it was advertised and where it was advertised is a pretty important variable that could greatly skew data collected.
@Psychgeist8 ай бұрын
Oh for sure! Snowball sampling is CERTAINLY less than ideal but an unfortunate reality of many social science research studies. Typically this looks like advertising through University mailing lists that the researchers are affiliated with, sharing on personal and professional and social media accounts like X or LinkedIn and then encouraging call Alex to then share within their own networks so what kind of snowballs into new groups of people. This certainly leads to bias of various kinds which are extensively discussed in the actual academic article that was written for these findings. In these short videos a lot of the nuance inevitably gets lost :-)

The part about it affecting the bottom line is huge. I only got one person into League of Legends because the game was known to be so toxic, and that person ended up getting a bit dramatic, to the point I had to set rules to play with her. That being said, she also didn't spend anything on the game, and I stopped spending after negative experiences with her. I've seen the same happening in Pokemon GO with stalking/harassment, and no one in my immediate friend group gives the company that facilitated it, Niantic, another chance in their other games.

Interesting how every single manifestation of alleged radicalization/extremism you focus on are what would be categorized as right wing(or conveniently associated with the right), and obviously from a white woke progressive ethno-centrist perspective. Tell us Rachel, does the left never go too far? Does the left never radicalize? Do explicitly left-identifying gamers never misbehave? And if so how do you recognize it? Does the left never misbehave along ideological lines? We know xenophobia can go very wrong, but how and when does xenophilia go wrong? Does the left not have an extremely strong presence in the video gaming world and the internet world? When the left goes too far, is it not dangerous? Seems to me as though you're quite happy to have the Overton Window shifted as far left as it is at the moment. Your perspective seems to be that of a sheltered white progressive leftist thinking their brand of leftism is the normal socio-political baseline and mystical mean mugged dragons are to be found everywhere to the right of where you stand. Using your example of Pew Die Pie making an obvious sexist joke as an example of online radicalization is, at best, laughable. Pointing to fringe 4chan edgelords cosplaying as revolutionaries as though they are in any way representative of the gamer demographic is really cringe. I laughed my ass off at the "Fused Gamer Identity" bit. Are you actually serious with this stuff? My goodness. You use the former Vice President of "Trust and Safety" on Twitter as a legitimate source to support your claims but it was revealed via leaks and the Twitter Files that this entire Trust and Safety apparatus was run by DNC-affilliated types, by former FBI and CIA employees and by people otherwise close to the Democratic party. The Twitter Files and many other leaks proved that the TaS council on Twitter was actively controlling narratives, controlling what was allowed to trend or go viral, of enforcing false narratives and of essentially being smear merchants. Twitter(and Reddit for that matter) literally had(has for Reddit) anti-white discrimination being OK as part of their ethical rules. They deliberately ignore anti-white racism and non-white racists spewing hate while going after anyone who disagrees often with nothing but dog whistles they themselves made up. That you included Del Harvey as though she is a legitimate source to support your thesis makes you lose any and all academic credibility that you may have had on this topic. Have any of you who support this stuff EVER considered the long term effects of harshly stomping down on hate from whites while protecting or ignoring hate from non-whites? Have you done any thought exercises on how this could backfire? On how this can have unintended consequences? On how it makes you gigantic hypocrites? I'm center left myself, always have been. But from my experience, while counting gaming as one of my hobbies for over 30 years, I have been exposed to just as much extremism/radicalization/hate-mongering coming from the woke/socialist/communist/anarchist left as I have from what would be considered the right, and the grand total of it all is not that much. But clearly its enough for a small industry of grifters to go tilting at windmills. I watched almost all of this at x2.5 speed and honestly the entire presentation is pedestrian. A bunch of grand declarations are made by the equivalent of reading tea leaves. I cannot believe tax payer funding is going toward this propaganda apparatus.

I just like video games. I wouldn't call you a mysoginist or a white nationalist for having a passion for watching films, or call you a racist for having a love for reading. Gaming is simply a hobby. What you are referring to is not gaming, nor should it be correlated with it, more so a toxic immaturity found in online video games where those with radical views manipulate vulnerable neurodiverse and neutral people.

Identity fusion is a very specific process that isn't just "someone who likes video games." For more on what fusion is and how it works, I recommend checking out the article linked in the video description. Also, there is something to be acknowledged here which is the cultural norms around "gamer cultures" are vastly different than say, cinephiles. This is where the nuance of the conversations comes in. The vulnerabilities of those being radicalized in games is a different question, one absolutely in need of more discussion, but a tangential one to the conversation than about identity (though my colleagues and I did recently write about that here: gnet-research.org/2024/02/08/grooming-for-violence-similarities-between-radicalisation-and-grooming-processes-in-gaming-spaces/)

Not sure if anyone will see this, but I wanted to ask about what Dr. Rachel Kowert said "generally speaking, media effects are incredibly, incredibly small. The way in which media affects our behavior is incredibly small, if not negligible, completely." In your earlier video "Mental Health in games: Stigma & Stereotypes, you talk about the repercussions of media portrayal of mental illness, specifically negative portrayals of mental illness lead to negative perceptions of the mentally ill, stigma, and barriers for individuals to seek help. How do you reconcile these points? Playing the devil's advocate here: Why do portrayals of mental illness matter and not portrayals of violence? Does it matter how mental illness and violence is portrayed in games if media effects might be negligible? Further, how would you measure real repercussions of these harmful portrayals? What about tokenism and stereotypical portrayals of women and BIPOC populations?
@Psychgeist9 ай бұрын
That is a series of a lot of very big questions that are not really possible to address in a KZbin comment. What I can say is the way that certain groups are represented in media can impact the way we also represent them in our minds through categorizations such as stereotypes. However, engaging with media that shows a behavior (like violence) actively changing our behavior to engage in such a way (committing violent crime) is not something that has been found to hold in the research literature. Part of this is because it is easier to change cognitions than behavior. However, another thing to consider is when we think about stereotypes and how they form, they tend to be about groups in which we have little or no direct engagement or concrete information about. It is a lot easier to sway my thoughts about "what someone in psychiatric care" is like if I do not know anyone who has ever been in psychiatric care. I only know what I am being told by the media... which then, impacts the way I categorize these groups in my mind. Engaging in deviant behavior, such as violent behavior, is a much more complex process that has been shown to be influenced by a multitude of factors - previous exposure to violence, peer delinquency, low frustration tolerance, etc. and has not been shown to be significantly impacted by the kind of media we consume.
