It wasn't Stonewall's Cavalry he was a Southern General so why the hell would he tear up Southern railroads... it was General Stoneman's. At least you could get the damned history correct. Typical liberal bullshit.

Every time I hear Joan perform this song I get emotional. It is great that some Norwegians enjoy Joan's music particularly this piece about the American Civil War. It is a sad and painful song. I hope Norwegians who listen to this song will do their own research into the American Civil War. Americans do not usually fight each other but an issue in America had to settled. I feel badly for Southerners during this period because they suffered greatly. But Americans had to live up to the promise of its founding. Some times good people fight for the wrong reasons. Artists like Joan raise our awareness. I hope Norwegians will learn more about the American Civil War and not just feel but think.

Other bands that lost a prominent member regrouped. If surviving members of the Heartbreakers and Traveling Wilburies would regroup, it would be a great reminder for us old timers and newer generations of talent that will never die.

He was clearly a big fan of the 12 string guitars I’ve never tried one but definitely need too, guess it has a thicker chorus sound, and after finding out his maxwell house coffee being the best coffee discovery I definitely need to try a 12 string

Joan heard the lyrics over the radio and misheard them. The first stanza is actually: Virgil Kane is the name And I served on the Danville train 'Till Stoneman's cavalry came And tore up the tracks again Virgil was probably a fireman, not the driver. George Stoneman became a future governor of CA. His roommate at West Point was Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. Stoneman was highest ranking Union officer captured by the Confederates. He was paroled.

Originally she did, and her single has several errors (so much cavalry came, not Stoneman's cavalry), but she was embarrassed and soon corrected the errors.

Fine song I'm not knocking it. But two things, I don't know why the winter of '65 was used. By then the war was over. And, I don't exactly get, but partly do, na na na ...etc. History in a song. Lincoln didn't have to enact war on the South. The situation could have been handled peacefully. He didn't even try. Imagine today, one or two of the Midwestern States declaring "We are no longer a part of this union. We resend our acceptance to belong to it. We are a new country of our own". Then the president sends troops to force them back into the union, devastates their economy, and all the other atrocities you won't believe without serious looking into,it. And steals all their crops and farm machinery. The South was forced back into the union. So much for, " ...a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth " The South wanted to leave the union and govern themselves.

All the ordinary men and women in the South suffered calamitous economic collapse, hunger, and vast destruction, while in the North those not engaged in the fighting enjoyed relative prosperity. The South deserves a beautiful song giving witness to this suffering, even if the war itself was not a just one.

Joan Baez is one of the vocalists on my quite short "Voice of an Angel" list. I could listen to her sing all day. She shows what the human voice is capable of without leaning on the crutches of Autotune and computer harmonization. Yes, Ariana, Katy and Beyonce, I'm looking straight at you guys. Today we've got "performers" and not "musicians."

Joan Baez ist nicht nur eine schöne Frau, sondern sie ist auch musikalisch sehr begabt. Was für mir noch wichtiger ist, ist dass sie sehr sympathisch kritische und sozialpolitische Themen anspricht und sich für mehr Menschlichkeit einsetzt !
