Just curious, does anyone know of a compact, roll up foam mat with a heat reflective side? Self inflating air mattress or any air mattress will suck in really cold weather, but foam with a mylar heat reflector might just be cats ass & if thin enough should roll up into almost nothing & still comfortably protect you from the cold ground.

@00:40.. Dog is saying "ugh.. can I go home now".. Nice to see people testing their loadouts. Talking to people who build a car bag or emergency bag feel confident they have the right stuff, but they never do a field test. One doesn't have to venture far from home in the event they must do the "walk" but if anything, do it in your back yard so you know what works and what doesn't.

Why don't you have a tent? You are going into the woods for three days and the only thing you have for shelter is your rain poncho, that you have to take off to use as the shelter. What are you going to do if it is raining when you need to make your shelter? Or after you built the shelter it's raining and you need to collect fire wood? You should also consider buying a sleeping pad. Many are made to insulate you from the ground and they weigh almost nothing.

Isn't failing just the greatest? :D I was gonna do a semi-test. Kind of a pathetic attempt, it was in my back yard. But roughly 0 degrees celcius. I have a hammock as a shelter, but I use an air mattress for it. That air mattress was a PAIN to pump up without it touching the ground. It has an integrated pump in it. So it ended up with me going into my house to be able to put it on the ground and pump it up without it getting wet on the ground. Now I know that I need to get myself a ground tarp for my shelter system, in order to have a dry bed to sleep in! Another thing that's good about that is that I get an area to just store my shoes, probably some luggage and stuff too. And an area to step on. So I'm basically making a floor, a roof and a bunk bed along the ceiling. Instead of just a roof and a bunk bed. Anyway, cool video. Hope it works out better next time! :D

Great video showing people what works and what doesn't. And very important to actually test one's preparations. Lately i've been thinking i should pack a second poncho liner for just such an occasion. Now i know how prudent my assumption was!!

All you need when it come to winding down in your shell scrape is... 1: always have a bivvi bag. 2: get a roll mat and put the roll mat down first then the bivvi bag on top of that. Trust me it will keep you nice and warm and dry. I'm ex military and have been in the field many times when the ground has been soaked and it works well. 3: try to seek out better land, higher up but still covered, and dryer land.
