Finally! Someone who understands the importance and _need_ of pockets. I can't begin to count the number of times I went into a grocery store and didn't grab a cart because I was only there for one Item (you'd think I'd learn by now, but I digress), only to walk out with ten or fifteen. If it weren't for pockets... Your mentioning of the light, specifically the colours used in the light and shadows, just made me realise something. Colour is _the_ most important element in any work; everything else is secondary. It doesn't matter how perfectly you get the background, how technically on point the subject matter is, and so on, if the colours chosen aren't right, then the entire piece fails. Conversely, you could have a piece that is your very first work of art and so is missing pretty much all of the elements that make up a "good" (whatever that word means to you) piece, but if your colours are spot on, that piece is going to stand out and be instinctively judged much more favourably by an audience. And that, I think, is why most of us quit art. We think its because we don't get the lineart right, or the background is wonky, or the proportions are horrible, or whatever we think the problem is. But what we don't realise is that its the colours we choose that is the problem. And why would we? Colours are simple. You can't get more simple than colours. So that can't be it; its got to be something else. We don't realise that colour theory is _hard_ and that it takes a lot of study and practise to get to a point where choosing the right colours takes a minimal amount of thinking, if it's not instinctive. I strongly suspect that if we realised this about colours and tone then we would have a lot more artists in the world. And just for Editor Srish: "relatability" is, indeed, a word.
@SrishCreates
@SrishCreates 23 күн бұрын
Ooooh that is actually a really good point, colours are certainly what catches the eye first, though I'd also maybe add dramatic light to this as well. It's when you find the sweet spot between the two, that magic happens! Also pls i need pockets that can hold actual stuff lollllll

"The best time of year?" I don't think so. First of all, that's Hallowe'en, and everyone knows that. Second, that "time of year" doesn't start until Mariah starts singing *that song* (you know which one), and I've got her locked in her washroom, so there's no way she can start singing until she breaks that door down. This was the biggest thing I needed to understand before I could relax and start designing original characters: it takes almost no effort whatsoever. It seems weird, but if you need to think about what to do, then you're doing too much. Take a lesson from the anime/manga world, who literally embody the "same face" phenomenon (I know it cuts down on time so that the artists can concentrate on getting the rest of the story done quickly. I don't mean to make it sound like a criticism, because I definitely am not. It's actually quite brilliant): if you want to make a new character, then all you need to do is change the hair. That's it. Even if all your characters wear the exact same thing, if you have different hair, then you have different characters. Our brains automatically associate this. We instinctively understand that our hair is a reflection of our attitudes and our personality. And I think that's why I always start off with the hair when drawing my characters. Obviously, try not to do "same face," but don't despair if you don't or can't. Because once you draw the hair, you will immediately understand who this character is, and what will (and won't) work for him or her. The style and the colour will help you focus on what needs to be done; you will know what part of the face or body needs to be adjusted, and more importantly, how they need to be adjusted to bring that character to life. And you won't have to think about it for more than a few seconds while you're drawing or rendering.

You will never see Kan Liu use blending brushes, he simply paints with dry brushes and uses a technique based on tonal contrasts to create smooth transitions, I think one could easily begin to understand Kan Liu's art if he starts by analyzing a very primitive form of his art, which is the Pixel Art of fighting games from the 90s, especially those from SNK. Another way to study some of it would be by visualizing posterized images, as these also have the basis of Pixel Art and are like a level above that kind of art, in fact many professionals recommend to study color theory with the help of posterized images at different levels.

I’ve seen oil painters do this before, and they often say it’s basically recreating that whole “stand back and eye-squint” that painters do when they’re painting, but making it so they don’t have to constantly actually squint. Once you get more accustomed to seeing the big shapes through the noise it becomes more natural to do without actually editing the reference material. As a suggestion, if blurring the image makes colour choice or shape building difficult, maybe try using a mosaic type of filter to turn it into blocks of colour and shape instead of soft edges?
@SrishCreates
@SrishCreates 2 ай бұрын
Oooh i like the idea of going mosaic instead of blurring, that way the integrity of tone and placement is preserved! I'll bet it is a lot easier to do this by squinting instead of blurring the reference - once you have the skill, that is 😅 it was an interesting challenge neveretheless!

Your portrait painting turned out so smooth and amazing! It really has some of that glossy oil painting kind of feel 😍 Feels like this method really paid off with all its frustrations, but oh god at the same time thinking about this method of portrait painting fills me with so much nerves and anxiety, because I'm also veeery impatient and can't focus on the overall thing (or the portrait as a whole) no matter how much better that method would be on the long run XD

I was going to make some rather witty comments about how my portfolio is doing so much better in this new brush economy, but then you went and said "Sit down, I'm your daddy now." And now I'm feeling things I never felt before, and I'm having to question things about myself... The value of this can be seen perfectly in the final reveal. You started up close, which made it look...okay. But as you zoomed out, it all blended together until finally you could see just how "realistic" it looks from the right distance. That final reveal sold the technique and showed just what this can all do. Now, all I have to do is make sure I actually follow through with this. Which is possible. The odds on that happening are about the same as having Zendaya say that she's done with Tom Holland and has always wanted me to be her snuggle bunny, but its possible. I'm so sorry to hear about the furry potato. They're in our lives for such a short amount of time, but that time is definitely the happiest part, isn't it?

Sorry to hear about your dog passing. I never lost a pet that was my own, but I was there when my mother's pet rabbit had some serious health issues before dying. Vet visits, syringe feeding, keeping track of the body temperature. I remember looking around myself a few times even up to a year later to see if the rabbit was there. It's a hard change even if it's not someone's own pet just happens to live in the same home. I did start a specific 100 heads challenge a few years ago (2020-ish), when many people were doing the same pinterest board that was made by a creator specifically for this reason. I don't remember who made it in the first place. I did maybe around 60 of them, with about 30 minutes to 1 hour each, all in grayscale. I did see myself improve a lot. I do like how you did a thing differently with turning them into something better than just a simple piece with adding your extra colors, particles, and custom frames around them. I really rarely do dedicated studies anymore, especially digitally, I sometimes implement them into a project, like I recently started making a traditional study series with graphite of an American Horror Story character I painted and drew a few times already named Madison Montgomery. She appeared in 20 episodes total across 2 seasons and I aim to make a study from each episode, trying to use the most iconic moments. I'm weak at capturing someone's likeness properly without overworking the piece and it started as an exercise to draw the same person in different moods and light situations. I think I only did 4 so far, but I still have them and I want to finish that series.
