I had these a few times in the Army. They'd hand these out and we all went WTF?!? They were decent but not as filling as the MRE.

I ate one of these today. It was awesome hit the spot.

I was in boot camp in 1994. When we were in the field, away from the mess hall these MREs are what we got. I was always excited to get a beef stew one. They were delicious. Cool to see that those things could last 20 years

I would strongly recommend Americans trying out rations with metric measurements to have a correct way to dose the portions. As one used to using metrics I could eyeball that you used to little water in the beef and too much in the soup right off. The pate´s and fish are to be put on top of ryebread and then can be handheld eaten without getting it on your fingers. Jam for the biscuits. I saw another guy having close to same ration but with dinner as spaghetti bolognese and without tasting the dish nor the spicy sauce, he squeezed the entire spicy sauce into the dish and ended up having smoke coming out his ears. It´s a spicy spicy sauce he he.

This past year ive switched to the keto diet....I feel so much better

FYI, according to a new report by the US Naval War College's China Maritime Studies Institute, the Chinese Navy's submariners have been eating these rations when the boat has to conserve energy. Aaaaaand, many of those have become anorexic or developed other eating disorders, & some sailors have developed minor cancers or skin conditions in & around their mouths.

The great thing I found in The CrR1m was it had lots of things you could carry I your pockets and snack on on the move. The mains and the brew kits were for when you had time to stop, but we never brewed or cooked in our night harbour, so it was great to have pocket food to snack on! 👍

I remember the number 11 as having dried peaches, crackers, either cheese or peanut butter, chicken with rice, and I know it had the chocolate chip cookie, which was very soft an delicious. Ìt was by far my favorite mre. ❤

When the army is small [but effective..] enough that it's worth spending an extra dollar or two per head, per day - lucky troops.

As an Austrian and the grand-daughter of a military man, seeing this ration really broke my heart. Other countries make MREs that remind soldiers of home. The Austrian ration has not a single item that's in any way related to Austrian cuisine. Instead, it's like a really poor German version, which is sad in so many different ways, not just in culinary terms.

I'm so glad you did the smoothie with some cookie. In my head I was screamin' "Crumble the cookie into the smoothie!" LOL. I bet the shortbread cookies that sometimes come with these would be good in the smoothie, as well. I don't think I would mix the cookies, butter and jam together, in any combination, unless I intended to crumble all the crackers up into the mains. They are needed for the crackers. The peanut butter is out now because of allergy fears and the several various smoothies are for folks that may not have teeth to chew regular food. A group of refugees, for instance, could trade around firmer food in order to feed the elderly some nutrition. I think the thought that went into these HREs is pretty cool. Vegetarian, Kosher and other religious and dietary concerns. Ain't America a great, thoughtful and generous country!

a guy i know at this monthly flea market near me. he has army stuff and he has these but super new ones. exact packages etc. 5 dollars per one day pouch. i got 2 of them and if i go back next month i will buy the rest of them.

One of the reasons the HDR’s don’t contain meat is gastro intestinal disorders. If people have been starving or near starving eating meat can cause major digestive problems like diahorreah which can be fatal. Further religious reasons may stop people eating types of meat - Hindus won’t eat beef, Muslims won’t eat pork. You also won’t give refugees tea and coffee due to caffeine being a diuretic. Lastly there is no FRH as these can be used for explosives.

Not a bell pepper fan, and do not like onions in any breakfast food. Any other meal with onions is fine, just can not stand them at breakfast.

A metric ton of these things are on the market. I'm guessing these were contract overruns or the cases have at least 1 or 2 MREs that are defective in some way, like an overbaked cookie. The nice thing about these is that they are extremely easy on the stomach and you won't be shitting your brains out after eating it. They're cheap bottom dollar meals that are not intended for American taste buds, they are meant to be dropped into places like Afghanistan and poor African countries. They're pretty easy to supplement with a meat product if you take these on a camping trip or do milsim events.
