We can argue about which performance is best but in many ways this defines all that is great in music. It's a classical structure with a rock beat and contains improvised jazz solos. Amazing

Such an iconic tune for the Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps back in 1976. Chuck's music was such a great inspiration for so many people. Such passion and great feeling to all of his tunes. Thank you Chuck.

This is not the Massey Hall recording. This is another recording. Think this was recorded In his hometown of Rochester, NY in the early eighties.

I remember marching for Sahara Temple THUNDERHERD JR. DRUM & BUGLE CORPS in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in the 80's and playing this tune. My God how it brings back so many memories of us ( an all black marching band ) with so much class and passion and feeling like I was on top of the world........GO HERD!

It’s always fun to hear of a corps from the past that may have just been local rather that one that toured and competed in DCI. You must have a lot of good memories. Was your corps sponsored by a Masonic lodge?

In early June of 1983, Chuck Mangione dropped by the practice of The Pride of Cincinnati Drum and Bugle Corps near the end of an all day practice. He came out of the shadows of the stands as we finished rehearsal. At first, everyone thought he was joking. Then we all realized that it really was Chuck Mangione. The next morning, he showed up to jam with us. It was awesome.

This sound is what created the popularity of the DCI . Between Mangione , Doc, Maynard and a few more they exploded on the scene in our band halls all over the nation and world. Everyone wanted to play their music . Queen's new sound and the new sounds of the 70's were taken to the field as many wrote scores of their own.... One by one the songs found there way on the football fields and DCI contests all over the USA....

The Blue Devils performed the Legend of the One Eyed Sailor in 1976 at the DCI world championships at Franklin Field in Philly. I was there as a lead soprano soloist for the Capital Freelancers. The Blue Devils won the world title but we were contenders. DCI has video available on their website as the Legacy series
