A complex song from Chuck’s golden era that I’ve been listening to since 1977! So many memories attached to this piece.

The Blue Devils performed the Legend of the One Eyed Sailor in 1976 at the DCI world championships at Franklin Field in Philly. I was there as a lead soprano soloist for the Capital Freelancers. The Blue Devils won the world title but we were contenders. DCI has video available on their website as the Legacy series

Such an iconic tune for the Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps back in 1976. Chuck's music was such a great inspiration for so many people. Such passion and great feeling to all of his tunes. Thank you Chuck.

In early June of 1983, Chuck Mangione dropped by the practice of The Pride of Cincinnati Drum and Bugle Corps near the end of an all day practice. He came out of the shadows of the stands as we finished rehearsal. At first, everyone thought he was joking. Then we all realized that it really was Chuck Mangione. The next morning, he showed up to jam with us. It was awesome.

We can argue about which performance is best but in many ways this defines all that is great in music. It's a classical structure with a rock beat and contains improvised jazz solos. Amazing

It’s always fun to hear of a corps from the past that may have just been local rather that one that toured and competed in DCI. You must have a lot of good memories. Was your corps sponsored by a Masonic lodge?

This sound is what created the popularity of the DCI . Between Mangione , Doc, Maynard and a few more they exploded on the scene in our band halls all over the nation and world. Everyone wanted to play their music . Queen's new sound and the new sounds of the 70's were taken to the field as many wrote scores of their own.... One by one the songs found there way on the football fields and DCI contests all over the USA....

It was amazing how much Chuck recorded before we found out who he was when he released his Feels so Good album in the late 1970s. He believed that album got noticed because of the name of the title track. The music world is so peculiar. Anyway, I have the song recorded by Chuck on different occasions including Tarrentela, and up in Rochester. I don't recall if it is on Hollywood Bowl, but probably. Those of us that were young enough and old enough in the 70s lived through the best musical age in the US.

First time I ever heard this was when Arizona State University's Jazz band came to Cortez High School, circa 1977. It was my first exposure to Chuck Mangione and it was a musical taste game-changer. Determined, Cool, and a little off the beaten path for a suburban teenager in the 70's. Still sounds sweet today!

This two-LP set is an unusual Chuck Mangione record. Taken from a marathon live concert, the flaugelhornist is featured with a big band. Mangione performs such boppish numbers as "Things to Come," "'Round Midnight," and "Manteca" with guest Dizzy Gillespie; duets with Chick Corea on "My One and Only Love"; and stretches out on "All Blues." He also welcomes such old associates as his brother, keyboardist Gap Mangione, plus tenorman Sal Nistico and altoist Joe Romano.

While most of us from that time participated to our school bands (including pep, marching and rally), plus orchestra, and jazz band ... the fact is Drum Corp is where we were really able to perfect technique and execution. This goes for both drummers and horn players ... I have no idea what resources guitar and bass players had.

It WAS almost 30 years ago. Either way, great show!!!! I still remember driving through the parking lot at the mall there and playing Devils in the car. A few of the other corps members gave us a little razzing. I think Madison, but I'm not sure. It was great to watch warm ups in the lot.

Understood. Allentown was it's own major event (DCI East, I think), and there were a LOT of corps in the region back then, so they had to have a prelims/finals setup. But, Allentown was not prelims for the championships. It might be closer to nats week in some years, depending on where tour's going. In 07m with finals in Pasadena, I think it was fairly early in the season.

The evolution away from a youth activity to an industry is something that manifested itself through DCI. It became only about DCI and who could afford the newest equipment and designer uniforms and professional drill designers, etc. What started as many corps getting together to make their own rules turned into a governing body interested in promotion and profit. Are there any top corps out there without corporate sponsorship any more?

Yeah....the general economy and rising costs of operation did a number on a lot of corps that didn't have the wherewithal to cope. Sometimes it was ban financial management, sometimes lack of successful fundraising, etc. Some people always want to blame DCI for it all. The tour itself IS a factor, but DCI was not the only nail in so many coffins.

Earl Viney, I have the old 33 of the 4 champions, and they were one of them. I also now have the DVD of the 1976 DCI Finals. I have to say I really long for the days when the corps played for the audience instead of the judges. Back then, the folks would spontaneously jump to their feet in unison repeatedly during shows, sometimes for the instrumentation, others for the color guard. Nowadays, it just doesn't happen. Sad!
