So I’ve been enjoying fly fishing. Where I live I have fished for small native brook trout and stocked trout. Using 2wt rods and sometimes 4wt. I cast a non weighted dry flys 98 percent the time. I have a 8 wt and want to start to target largemouth and do some saltwater fishing as well. I never tried throwing bass streamers and things with weight. I tried the other day and I look like I’m brand new again! Please any tips would be appreciated. I don’t know much about fly lines other than you have floating line and sinking line and you have crap quality vs good quality. The line is floating line that came on my orvis encounter (cheap I know but all I can afford) the leader length looks to be atleast 9 foot. Should I shorten it? Also by what I see you doing, casting weighted flys looks so different in movement compared to throwing a small size 16 caddis fly.

I have not found that to be true. A rod that will cast a 70ft line will also cast a 25 ft line

Thank you for demonstrating this fly. I have been looking for a large fly l can use on the Murray Cod here as they grow to over a metre long. I have watched nearly all of your videos and l just want to say thank you for the knowledge you share best wishes from Australia

I wonder how much power you put into the cast in order to shoot the entire 100ft. It looks very relaxed and lenient on video. I only manage to get roughly 60ft out with my 8w and a 28ft head (310gr)

Making great memories and the cast didn't look to labored to me I thought it cast well from the video.

If you hold back as you unload that flexible rod, you'll cast that rod fine, no tailing loop . With that fast action rod stroke too.

Dry casting without a fly is one thing. I'd like to see this same demonstration with a hookless heavy fly to see how things work.

Just finished the explanation of the numbers, sounds awesome; I wonder how likely this is to be accepted by the fly fishing industry?

Gunnar, l'm just getting into big fly tying. I know you love mono thread. It has alot going for it, but l have one problem I can't get away from. A few wraps and it starts twisting, making bad looking Flys, but more importantly weakening the mono. What am l doing wrong, and how do l fix it. Thanks buds. Being a big fly newbie, your tutorials are so helpful for me.

Are you buying pheasant pelts with wings to get that marabou or do the pelts without wings still contain the good marabou?

Gunnar, I have split many types of feathers mostly waterfowl.. You might try pinching the base quill in your vice or clamp it to your table with a wood working clamp from the hardware store. And please, this is how I was taught by some great classic Atlantic tiers. when you begin the splitting process pull out and and away from the quill at approximately a 45 degree angle. Anyway, thanks for all of your great tutorial videos. Young may you have my admiration. you are one hell of a tier. Please keep it up. Kind regards

when you test for the frequency, you said you measured 432 grains and put to tip with rubber band. That is not the same amount that deflected the rod 1/3 of length. THere was barely any deflection. I don't get it. what am i missing?

The only and perfect way to chose a fly rod is by feeling the fly rod when you are at the store shopping for it, just be aware of what is the most of your presentation is going to be to that particular fish. Forget it about numbers if 5or whatever weight is nonsense. The same goes with the line, I don’t shop fly line by weigh but sometimes I use grain weigh as reference point. But you never go wrong by learning to feel your equipment. 🤔

Hey bud, do you have a good trick for getting your flyman tank motor to run slow like that? The adjustment plate on mine can only do so much. Thanks 🤘🏻 love the sculpin. Last time I tried pec fins I had a lot of trouble getting them equal. Your videos are full of great teachings. I'm a complete rookie. But pretty obsessed

Love your work, today I can’t see 100 the porpoise of the entire single hand test casting a switch rod 🙃 Perhaps is a profitable content issue, but we need to be more realistic about the casting conditions Gunnar I know you know also, that everything you see here will change as soon conditions change… Be well brother Keep up the good work 🤛🏻

But , you never weighed the baggie! You go through all of this, even weighing the rubber band but not the baggie. God stuff even if slightly flawed. BTW, that's my favorite streamer rod too!

Nice but why is the total rod length used in the calculations? Shouldn't it be only the length from tip to handle. Otherwise two rods using the same blank would produce different results if one had a fighting butt and the other didn't.

Totally informative video (I'm a techie type). I have a number of Winston 5 piece LT rods (circa 1996 or thereabouts) that I am trying to find modern fly lines for. This will be what keeps me from purchasing the wrong line for a particular rod. Thank you. God bless
