How can you compare that to btr7 they're not even in the same category? Btr7 is a Bluetooth and wired DAC amp which hip dac 3 doesn't have Bluetooth. Btr7 is also more pocketable while hip dac 3 is more of a desk amp

Thank you for the great review! Totally agree with the fun vs. analytical take, I experience the same! On that note, it sucks that there are so many frustrated people in the audio community that will tell you "tHe sPeAkEr mEasUreS bEtTer sO iT muSt bE bettEr and you're not allowed to have a different opinion!" - it's such a fun hobby but seems there's really more clowns in audio than in any other areas of consumer electronics:)

100% this community is amazing but it's that old school gatekeeper mentality that ruins this hobby and many others. Instead of ushering in the new generation they put them down. It should always be looked at from a place of our joy for the gear and most of all the joy of hearing the music and all the little differences others haven't heard before.

I like small speakers with smaller drivers as they can do some things better or different than larger speakers with larger drivers. Always on lookout for special speakers that might have a limited run as some have done over the years. That stated, I think there are few speakers that deserve to be hated as most offer something, and do some things better or different than competitors. Even those I sold or returned I liked some of the things they did but do notice differences or omissions in performance. I look for certain traits in performance, such as a speaker has to have a certain degree of resolution and transparency although I can give up some of this if it does other things well enough. Some things do not have to be absolute or so pronounced to call it a keeper. Images of the singer(s) and instruments should have good placement in the stage. Separation is very important so sounds don't smooch together into a wall of sound. What Benny states about throwing sounds is a nice feature of spacial effects that can help the depth of stage as well as width. Width beyond the speakers can be nice but more importantly is the stage depth. Sounds that present in front of, between and behind the speakers help present a more intimate listening experience with alot of music. If its hard or metal rock, etc., it isn't but for progressive, jazz, classical, folk and even soundtracks, it adds to the performance. Bass...there should be enough to support the lower mids to not sound thin. The mids should be accurate and have natural tonality. Highs... I have listened to metal, soft domes, AMT and Ribbon type tweeters and these all bring something to the table. Room interaction also affects performance. That said, I tend to like a little more spice on top but have enjoyed those with warmer performances. Right now I use Dali Opticon 1 MK1 and like the added weight in the mids, and with a sub, the performance is really good. The highs are a bit softer than what I was used to but I still like them. Finding small speakers that do more right than wrong, for me has been difficult. The Opticon performs well in both near and midfield (5 to 9ft for me) and better overall than even the Dali Menuet SE did. I returned the Dali Menuet SE becasue I found it too refined in the upper mids and highs. Instruments were too muted or essentially gone in the background which bothered me. Also, it was a bear to drive being far less sensitive and much lower impedance swings well below 4 ohms. The Opticon at 4 ohms and measured at a higher sensitivity than stated by Dali makes it easier to drive and doesn't omit background instrumentation. The SE did have better resolution and a great wood finish though. I also use Triangle Plaisir Zetas. Budget speakers but very euphoric in comparison to alot of others, which I like. While many would state these color the sound, the Zetas are exceptional with even difficult music where alot of instruments are playing. A different presentation than the Opticons but I can switch for these differences which is nice. Less body in the mids, but more bottom heft due to a bump around 100 hz, typical of many standmounts speakers. Also extended highs in comparison. This speaker makes music sound pretty, and although not audiophile or hifi, its nice for background music you don't need to analyze. Good for both music and movies, but I may prefer the bit more resolution and body of the Opticons for movies. Both sound natural enough. The Zetas a bit more glare with sibilant passages at times. Martin Logan 15i with Al woofer and its FMT version of an AMT tweeter was fun with movies. Fun and engaging. Very resolving too. But it had some difficulty with micro-dynamics and subtleties in the background of soundtracks in comparison to the others. Not a big deal for movies as its performance was still preferred in that regard but for music it just didn't sound right to me. Also a nice wood veneer but I sold these. Nothing wrong with them as the buyer really loved them. Monitor Audio Silver 50. Really nice wood veneer, exceptional resolution and detail but a bit analytical for me. Good tonality but didn't get my foot tapping. Nothing like the Silver 100 which found too overbearing, always adjusting the volume for hearing both subtle details as well as when things got too bombastic. I found the ML 15i had more in common with the Silver 100s while being far easier to listen to. If you have the Silver 100s and need rears, get the 15i it will match better. Quad S2, was the most resolving and detailed speaker I had and while it was fine for movies, it took the emotion out of music. Also didn't image as it should have. flat as a pancake soundstage to boot. Something about Kevlar woofers I don;t like, same with wharfedales too. I also found Alum woofers less to my liking from the above speakers at least IME. I seem to like paper drivers the best but not always either. I tried the Triangle Borea 2 and while it sounded bigger than the Zetas, I prefeered the performance of the Zetas. Moving up to the Triangle Titus EZ gave more body and and a more life like sound to the piano in the lower mids, nice attack but something missing in the upper mids and highs. The Opticons did some things better in the upper mids and highs, better separation which I found surprising. I liked certain aspects but there's where the omissions stand out. Not saying I hated it but returned for thise reasons as well as some QC issues I had. Issues did not impact SQ. Dynaudio Emit 10...an odd speaker that could sound great at certain frequencies then off at others, particularly with voices. Also too refined in the highs that omitted or suppressed some of the upper mids and highs. Strangely it sounded better when I wen tinto an adjacent room rather than when I was in front of them. So, going up in price doesn't guarantee a speaker will perform better for our needs and preferences. This XSA Vanguard was measured by ASR and seems very prominant in the mids, opposite of the being V curved. Might sound shouty to some by the measurements. So room might really be in play with this one. The cheaper Vanguard Scout (not sure if the same company) might be a better option, which is what I thought it was when I first came here. What re some of your experiences with other small speakers? Knowing we each experience music/sound a bit differently, not to mention gear matching, still useful to hear how others find a particular speaker.

Thank Benny...just discovered your channel. I'm new to the HiFi realm. I'm on a budget and pulled the trigger on these speakers due to your review (and various others) ** Question - I may not have a trained ear, but this speaker's base sounds a bit "boomey" or not tight??? If that's the right way to describe it? I have them 24 inches from the wall and using 14 gage speaker wire....should I be using 12 AWG perhaps? Listening with older but decent Onkyo receiver rated at 90 Watts/channel. Thanks for any suggestions before I potentially return them.
@BennyKsBandwidth
@BennyKsBandwidth 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for stopping in on my humble channel! A bigger gauge wire isn't always the answer, but I would say the smallest I go is 12 awg. It will help with dynamics. See if that helps and let me know! It's also due to the woofer itself since it's a paper driver it will sound a little more boomy and loose due to the nature of the material.
