Hi Ken, thank you so much for these videos. Best thing on the internet for a KTM 950 carb. I’m quite sure my carbs are running rich. Dying at idle, sludgy looking spark plugs, smells rich, bad mpg. I replaced the plugs and that helped seemingly, but now it just varies more widely in its idle speed. Sometimes perfect, others very low and dies. According to the service manual, the fuel air mixture can only be adjusted with the carbs off (???!). Is there a good reason for this? Ultimately my question is, how do I diagnose and fix it running too rich? I have a carb kit arriving tomorrow, and a carb balancing tool arriving in a few days, so I’ll clean out the carbs and reassemble. Do I just set the mixture screws to 1 3/4 turns out and hope for the best? Any help is invaluable. In fact I’d be happy to send you money for a good step by step process breakdown. I want to learn to do this myself, and I’m willing to pay. Thanks 🙏

Great series! At 6:27 you talk about the take-up shim. Just a few questions on that. - is that oem? - what function does it serve if not oem? - should it be used on both carbs or just one and if so, front or rear?
@AdventureMachines
@AdventureMachines Жыл бұрын
the 'take up shim' is a stainless washer, that helps keep the clip from wearing into the slide body. It also functions as a half clip position. It is a OE part, but if a person isn't aware that it is there when disassembling, they can get lost easily as they can get stuck on the slide and then fall out at a later time during cleaning. OE stack is this, bottom up: Slide, washer, clip. Same for both front and back

Awesome video. WAW ! Fantastic series! But I've got a question. My 950 carbs have done 125.000km and the bike backfires a lot when closing the throttle. Almost sure it's the rear carb throttle valve axle that has too much play. A known problem, with almost no cure. So I'm thinking about disassembling the valve and the axle. Perhaps replace the axle with one from a front cylinder carb. But the screws that fix the valve to the axle have been peened. So they have to be ground away. Which is all very good, but how to I fix those screws afterwards? Some kind of Loctite? New screws that have to be peened too? All information is very welcome.
@AdventureMachines

Getting the throttle plates off of the throttle shaft without causing damage is very difficult. Also, the carbs are NLA from KTM and to my knowledge, there are no third party new parts sources. I would make sure that the ACV is working correctly, air-jets are clean, pilots are clean, exhaust flanges/interfaces are tight before trying to tear apart the shafts

Hi, what a great vid!!!! I see you place the intake manifold clamps in such a way that you can reach them from the left. But I suppose it won't hurt of you place them in such a way that you can reach them from the right, right? Because when you do so, you can get the carbs out while leaving the left fuel reservoir in its place. Very handy when you want to check the mixture screws, or the membranes or something else.

It's been quite some time but wonder how this ended up. Can you share an update? How is/was throttle response with the EFI, was there any performance benefit as well?
@AdventureMachines
@AdventureMachines 2 жыл бұрын
EFI throttle response is crisp but still good. It produces more power than a stock ADV, but that is not because its EFI. Its the sum of the parts; RC8 throttle bodies, open filter, SD cams, SD header, custom EFI tune.
@panosvougiou
@panosvougiou 2 жыл бұрын
@@AdventureMachines How does it compare to a well-jetted carb 950? I have my bike properly jetted with an ITG filter and it's a night and day difference when compared to the stock setup.
@AdventureMachines
@AdventureMachines 2 жыл бұрын
@@panosvougiou It will run away from a carb'd 950 ADV in a full on sprint. Again, this is not just because its EFI. The RC8 TBs are bigger, the SD cams are 'hotter', the SD header works better for power than a ADV header and the open foam filter setup is free flowing in comparison to a OE airbox. The carbs are much smoother in power delivery, so for a ADV that gets ridden technical single track, this isn't the formula. It runs like a hot 990 SD with a little less torque but revs quicker. I have it setup super moto right now where it gets ridden almost all street/pavement.

@@AdventureMachines many 990s have quite jerky throttle response. Is this still the case with this modded bike? Thanks for all the responses so far!
@AdventureMachines
@AdventureMachines 2 жыл бұрын
@@panosvougiou The jerky throttle is pretty much all gone, but there is only so much that can be done with the OE ECU. The later model ADV, 2011-2013 were pretty much as good as that ECU got. Right now I am running open loop (no O2 sensors) and have spent quite a bit of time developing the map just for this build. To make it 'right', I need to go to a aftermarket ECU.

@AdventureMachines
@AdventureMachines 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what you are looking to do and your budget. There are some, me included, that really like the way the carb bikes run and the simplicity. However, the EFI bikes can be made to run really well and be very reliable too. If I was looking for a Adventure, go for a 2011 or newer. If a 950, look for a 06. The early bikes can be great too but they are getting close to 20 years old now, so either get a 'good deal' and plan on full major maintenance or buy the newest most well maintained bike you can find. GL with the search.

An update to this build; The cells/packs that I used to make the original battery pack for this didn't work. The internal BMSs would trip at about 40A of pack current. I ended up building a pack out of Model 3 21700 cells and it totally rips. I had to turn the controller almost all the way down for the little kids, but when turned all the way to 11, it will haul around a 160lb guy and do wheelies!

Can you explain why you have the large shut-off switch? Is a on/off switch through the controller not adequate? I’m learning, so any info is appreciated! Thanks!
@AdventureMachines
@AdventureMachines 2 жыл бұрын
The manual switch is a way to completely disconnect the battery without unplugging the XT60 from the pack. It also is a key type, so it can be removed if you want to make sure that the kids are not riding by themselves. So, it is redundant to the contactor that driven by the controller and technically isn't necessary.

Can you get the emulsion tubes just above the main jet out of the carb body ? Can debris get into the internal passages? I’ve cleaned the carbs out several times, can’t see any debris anywhere. When starting it runs as if it’s on one cylinder, pops and bangs, only runs with choke on as soon as you try to open the throttle it cuts out. This bike is driving me mad !!! I’ve changed fuel pump and put additives in the fuel, just got the carbs off again, can’t see anything wrong. Any suggestions?

@@AdventureMachines thanks for the information on my poor running KTM 950. I had a better look at the pilot jets and yes they were blocked, got a piece of wire up inside and white powdery deposits came out. Just by watching your videos gave me the confidence to dig deeper into the jets and you were quite right with your analysis. Proper tank venting can be key to eliminating fuel delivery issues with the 950 ADV. If the tanks and fuel get hot and there isn't adequate venting, it will push fuel past the float needle and flood the engine while not running.

The pulse driven pumps _can_ work well, many have used them. I have found that there are a few _howevers_ associated.... One of them is you have to remember to turn off the petcock when not running or it will flood the engine with fuel. This gets worse when the tanks are full and its hot out (Baja hot). I have also found that the fuel pressure delivered can be erratic. These carbs can't handle much more than 1.5PSI before the floats/needles give up and the engine starts running rich. I have many many miles on a Facet 40171 as well as a 'Dr Bean' modded OE pump. I prefer the 'stop fuel flow' feature when not energized and a consistent 1.5PSI of fuel pressure with both of these pumps.
