Great video Ben, I’ve been using a martingale with my Corgi and it’s had similar effect. But I feel more confident of him not escaping. We have had many escape incidents . ( on in a nature park where it took 20 minutes together him back. He had a great time. I realized I need to get fitter. 😅

I still think that 2 is better than one unless its a small breed, by a long ways. Once you keep up the discipline of routine and continuous reinforcement of training/commands. They help each other burn off steam as pups before incorporating lead training. They keep each other entertained and that's one of the biggest things during the puppy stage for boredom and any sort of anxiety. It truly isn't that complicated assuming one doesn't think that training and reinforcement with the dogs isn't just for a period of time but most of their life. I am already looking to get my second lab pup so that they won't be too far apart in age as my pup is currently 4 months. My biggest regret when i got my Malinois was not getting two.

I understand everyone’s experience getting two dogs at once is different. I adopted 2 littermates at once, and it was the best decision. They never experienced separation anxiety or naughtiness from boredom. I agree 100%, however, with training them individually. This was one mistake I made. Although they are mostly incredibly well-behaved, they are somewhat reactive to wildlife on walks, which has been a bit of a problem.

Great video, thank you! I've seen a few trainers use this approach, but I’m unsure about how to handle walks. Training for 15 minutes is fantastic, but dogs also need exercise. What should I do if my dog starts reverting to bad behaviour during the walk? Any tips would be much appreciated!

I use a harness most of the time now because my dog figured out he can bite leashes clean off when he gets scared and wants away.. Having the anchor point on his back and not in front of his mouth gives me peace of mind. This isn’t a permanent solution and we do train to get him less afraid of the lead. Definitely prefer slip leads tho. Ben if you have some tips on training when a dog won’t take treats or a toy I’d appreciate it 🙏

Harnesses are designed to encourage a dog to PULL. So its damn near impossible to train a dog not to pull on one. If you have a brachycephalic dog breed (aka a dog that is flat faced, or looks like their snout was squashed or flattened inwards) a martingale or even a prong can be a safer option than a slip or a normal flat collar. However, please be careful with your corrections as flat faces dogs are more prone to breathing issues. If you are concerned for using anything on your flat faced dog, then it might be best not to unless you're sure they'll be fine. I have a reactive Chihuahua, and Chihuahuas can be prone to collapsing trachea. I got him a martingale and Its wonderful! Martingales and prongs distribute pressure more evenly than a slip or prong.

so excellent. i learned this the hard way, ending up with an overly defensive dog like barley. what i've also learned is my dog who was 2 and a half when we met, has great taste in friends. it was me, allowing any dog, always excited, to invade her space. and then the trouble starts. we are both much happier now, avoiding the dog park, and pretty much just walking by other dogs unless she clearly wants to meet them, not because they want to meet her. she has never been aggressive reactive at all. i think of it as defensive reactive. and i don't blame her. she trusts me more too, now that i'm not allowing approaches that i know will offend her, and i do allow her to choose her interactions. and the minute i saw barley with your girls i knew he would be fine. for all the reasons you explain so well. they so want to feel good. i hope he has found a way.

Love the video! Thank you! I can't even get my dog to stay calm while I'm on the floor. If I sit down around her, she'll jump all over me and nip at me. Not sure how to stop that because she actually hurts while trying to teach her to calm down around a sitting person. She's a 21 week old lab/catahoula mix.

A chill video from a chill trainer. Love your chillness :) You got any trick/advice if a dog gets distracted once in a while when training/playing. Like a bird or an other person in the park makes my BC 50% of the time just drop her toy and wonders off. I guess its not wrong of me to tell her off and come back instantly, with a little corrction on the longleash? Loose leash walking is going pretty well even in busy places (I do have to tell her a few times to stay in heel but she does correct herself before I have to with the leash on my "na-ah") She does not like fetch that much, but likes to play tugg. Yet as I said, while playin or obedience training, a distraction sometimes is more intresting for her, she does not run off like crazy, but just the focus is all gone. Anyway, keep them videos coming man. Love to learn from you !
@balanceddoguk
@balanceddoguk Ай бұрын
@@gameoftros4875 thanks man! I would say just to be a little more patient with her when she is distracted and not feel like you need to correct her in those moments. Draw her attention back to you by moving away from the distractions and if you have fully lost her just stop the session entirely and put her away or take her inside. She will learn than losing focus on the game not only makes the game end but everything ends.

Is it counter intuitive to walk my dog on a flat collar in more of a “throw away” mode, while I’m training heel separately? Should this be the only “walk” we do until we’ve progressed to actually walking down the road?

@@PennysPorch the trick is to make this something you then do all the time and it not just be at specific times in training. It’s like learning to drive a car where you start with the basics and then are applying them to actual driving on proper roads, but quieter ones while you learn. Until your on the big busy roads! Just discovered your channel and it's truly awesome. It also gave me some hope in a moment where training my dog has become quite disheartening. He's a beautiful and sweet 4yo English Setter who I adopted 9 month ago after he was abandoned by a hunter (here in Italy this happens a lot with these breeds - hunters often abandon hounds who are not "good enough"). Knowing how reactive these dogs are, I started working on my recall with him from day one and I have reached the point where I can say his recall his very good in moments of medium/low stimulation. However, he's got such a strong prey drive and such high reactivity that in certain circumstances it feels like he's not even aware I'm there with him. If he smells water nearby there's no way stopping him from running towards it, or if he smells an animal in a nearby bush, there's no way recalling him for the next 2/3 mins. This is very sad to me because I love going on long walks in nature with him and see him explore the world around him, but I also want to make sure he's safe and that I can control him should the situation require that. I'll definitely try the long lead technique, especially when it comes to his drive to run towards water. Keep up the good work Ben, really appreciate your energy and the knowledge you bring to the table!
