Brutal conditions looks like you had similar views to me on my last camp which was zero 😢 Just goes to show how things can change in the Lake District. Lovely tarn Stickle Tarn, never camped there myself for the reasons you say it just gets too busy. Your stove flared up because the gas canister was on its side so running on liquid gas, let the preheat tube heat up before inverting or putting the gas canister on its side. The idea is in cold weather you can run them on liquid gas and the preheat tube will vaporise the liquid before it hits the burner if the preheat tube is cold it can’t do this as efficiently so the reason you got the flare up. Just subbed to your channel atb Karl 👍

Is it just me or it is a bit dumb to be out in those conditions, did you check the weather radar before heading out, unnecessary in my opinion, if you slip and sustain a significant injury and have to be rescued by stretcher, that puts others at risk. Before you ask, I spent 30 years working in remote locations managing teams from 100-1000 men, have done my fare share of lost man searches due to accidents, bad planning and extreme weather.

I do like that I put a base layer on, possibly my thin hoody then the jacket and I don't need to keep faffing about taking layers on and off. Hi Keith, re your stove flaring up, it could be because you are lying the gas on the side, instead of getting vaporised gas, it's getting fed liquid gas instead. This can be an advantage in really cold conditions when your gas won't vaporise but it does tend to flare up. When did the channel name change happen?

Paramo jackets are great, but you've got to understand that it's not really waterproof, more like a super softshell that keeps you warm and comfy when wet and dries out quickly while you wear it. It works best for high energy activities where you're generating lots of heat and moisture and not stopping. E.g. fell running, climbing or mountain biking. If you're strolling along gently or doing a static activity like fishing or bird watching in the rain then you'll probably be disappointed in Paramo and think it's rubbish. For static activities a breathable membrane shell is probably better because you're not generating as much condensation.

This is great news, i have 4 Paramo jackets, one fleece, one thermal insulated outer, one wind resistant (i use this in the summer even if it rains as its water resistant ish but dries super fast) and now i have just got the Velez jacket for more extreme winter weather/rain. I'm still concerned about a full day if driving rain but to he fair i find most of the time here in the uk when i decide to go out its normally intermittent anyway. I also carry an ultra light Tyvek jacket i made out of one of those white chemical protective murder suits 😂. This is a last resort over smock but it keep me warm and wet due to sweat but it'll get me off the hills safely. Hopefully the Velez jacket means i won't have to break out the murder suit 😂😂😂

I have a question, the technology in the lining of the jacket uses the nikwax analogy that's supposed to be similar to the way animal fur stops water from penetrating through to the skin, so in your opinion how does this technology compare to goretex in general? So they obviously both keep you dry but what is the differences in comfort, flexibility and weight?. I understand jackets and brands will differ enormously and they will be used under different circumstances however I have always thought goretex was the top standard, the way to go but it seems newer technology is now comparable to goretex so these reviews can change people's perception quite substantially. Thank you for showing us in depth just how much this particular jacket performs.
@KandCoutdoors
@KandCoutdoors 16 күн бұрын
Hi Phil Gortex is a membrane between the jacket fabric. Analogy is lining and a little heavier. The downside with gorete is that once the fabric is waterlogged, it loses some breathability unless u have goretex shake dry, which never wets out but is no longer produced. (The chemicals are banned ) Gortex, in my experience, let's no water through, but as breathability reduces, it will get damp inside from your water vapour. Analogy does let water through and I think would eventually let u get a little damp, depending on design ( my velez smock, let too much water through due to poor zips) the analogy will keep you warm even if damp but most important it dries quickly. I don't think there is a best material they all have compromise, and it's a matter of which suits ur personal need most
@ph111hud0
@ph111hud0 16 күн бұрын
I never knew goretex was a membrane, I thought it was an actual outer layer, thank you for a boss explanation. I look forward to more of your videos. I have the same montane pants you have, I find them comfy and durable, would be great if you review some pants. I remember getting thermal pants from Aldi for £12 each, they were incredibly warm and water resistant too but I put weight on and that did not help so I gave them away in the end.

The quick answer is NO. It's not waterproof. But the full answer is more complicated. I live in the UK and after 40 years of hiking and biking in all seasons I now very rarely wear an actual waterproof anymore. Most of the time all I need is a highly breathable, quick drying windshirt, windproof or softshell with some degree of shower proofing. In persistent rain it doesn't matter if you're wearing a £20 or £250 shell jacket because once the outer fabric is saturated they will both perform the same in terms of breathability" and condensation control. You going to get wet anyway, so being warm and comfortable with quick drying clothes and footwear is more important than being totally "waterproof".
@KandCoutdoors
@KandCoutdoors 6 күн бұрын
I agree but found this jacket very poor the zips just leaked so much water i was amazed. If you see my review of .y valez jacket which I think is a better design, I love it. Also agree about wet feet, I prefer breathable no waterpfoof trail runner that dry out fast for 99% of conditions, thanks for commenting very much appreciated
@mrfitz96
@mrfitz96 4 күн бұрын
@@KandCoutdoors OK. To be fair I don't have any experience of the current Paramo jackets that used lighter fabrics and different zips because I'm still wearing a 19 year old Aspira Smock. It's definitely NOT waterproof more like a softshell but I choose to wear it for high energy activities when I'm generating a lot of body heat because it's windproof, warm & comfy, dries quickly and is excellent for condensation control. If I'm just strolling down to the shops or doing a more static activity like fishing that's not generating condensation I wear a gore-tex shell instead. Or a poncho.
