Hi I was able to get some #10 and some of the wide mouth jars but I am having problems getting good seals. I love the concept but I am so frustrated with them because they won't seal. Help!

I would love to try weck jars, but they are so darn expensive and hard to find.

Soap deposits scum which makes fabrics dingy, smelly, coarse and water repellent. No modern washer is designed to use it.

Dissolves soap in untreated water. Water softeners are sitting nearby. Smart? Nope!

I like your using a smaller pressure cooker. Using a proper size canner for sizing the canning job. I have canner from 4qrt to 22qrt. rarely use the 22qrt. Usually use a 10qrt and a lot of time a 6 qrt. I do a lot of small portioning for my needs. Next, When I first started canning I more quart jars than pint jars. Again, I noticed I would open a large jar and I had to eat several days of soup, beans etc., so I changed my search for more pint jars, then I start canning in have half pints. Buying lids were not an issue but that was cash going out of my pocket. In 2000, I found the vintage glass lids on the auction site and started aquiring them, they were fairly cheap. Then in 2010ish the market for glass blow-up and getting over-priced. I had been getting Presto Lids and Rings to use, I then fell into the Ball #10 lids. I like the Presto Lids as I have Rings for the, but not very many for Ball. However, I now use Weck Clips and Ball #10 and Weck Lids on an assortment of small commercial jars to can. I also use Weck Lip Gaskets with out any problems. I even use Oui yogurt jars as jam jars and broth jars. (single serve).

I dont get why so many people say its not safe, but then they use weck jars that are the exact same concept! Only difference is the mechanism to hold the lid during processing! Weck jars are also NOT usda approved?! Yet people think they are safer for some reason?! I think using logic, not by listening to what the government tells me is safe...

I always preferred the rattlers, they're not a pressure guage - they're a pressure regulator. And for steam, pressure is temperature. Good on you for using the canner cookers, the old books mention it's for both.

I am really happy that I came across your channel!! You have been very informative. I have some 63 lids and at one time I had a jar, now I can't find it! 😢 I was at a garage sale and I almost shouted you've got 63 lids!!! The guy gave them to me!! 😊 I think because I knew what they were and he was impressed! Lol So, again, thank you! P.s. ... I really like your collage of lids and boxes!

Hi, I have lots of small jars (one piece) with porcelain inserts. Can this be used to preserve jam or items that does not require water bath or pressure canning? I only saw this when I got home. Otherwise not sure what to use them for
@rudedogfarms25611 ай бұрын
If they’re the ones I’m thinking you mean the zinc lids with porcelain inserts and yes. Those can be used for anything. Don’t forget the rubber rings!

hi Rude, i'm a long time canner and i'm really interesed in how you know that the jars with the glass nubs (on the bottom) are OK for pressure canning...were you taught that? or noticed it or did you read it or learn it somewhere? I get asked a lot of questions about canning and I just did a couple vids on canning in the Atlas Mason jars in which spaghetti sauces is sold (like Classico) I even talked to the company and they said do NOT pressure can in them...they have those little nubs on them though so i'm interested in your info. Thanks!
@beingsneaky2 ай бұрын
I think classico is doing the ole " cover our ass" move by saying don't can in our jars. But many ppl have, even reused the lids that came with them.

Thank you for making this video! You helped give me the confidence to try glass canning lids. I will not be going back to disposable lids again! I have approximately 200 old glass ball regular mouth and 50 glass wide mouth now also using the bale style. The success rate is fantastic. Thank you again for putting out the information

Thanks for the great info. 😊. In 1906 in San Francisco California the Kerr glass canning factory survived this terrible earthquake. The damage was all around the factory but nothing was broken in the factory.

If it’s a glass lid, I push a butter knife into the rubber just under the lid and push till you hear the hiss.

@@rudedogfarms256 I've tried that nothing budges, except for I cracked the glass lid now. I'm thinking of putting it back in some hot water. The lid is no good but the jar is, so want to save it.
@OldSchoolPrepper Жыл бұрын
@@debbiemoray7959 your instinct to go with hot water is correct....get a pot, put in some room temp water, put in the jar (it should also be room temp) make sure water covers (like if you are going to WB can it) bring it to the boil and let boil for a good 5 mins or so to soften the rubber...remove jar, use the knife method that Rude describes...sorry the lid broke that's a bummer.
@debbiemoray7959 Жыл бұрын
That's what I did and it work. Thank you. I also oiled all the seals and did it again, and I was able to open it the second time.

@@OldSchoolPrepperthis is my biggest obstacle too. The seal is soooo strong, I can’t get the lid off. I asked my 95 year old aunt and she says to insert a butter knife between the ring & the lid and TWIST. I tried that but no luck. I didn’t want to be too forceful because the lid may crack. I ended up using pliers to pull the rubber to break the seal. I will try the hot water trick. Thank you. Another question, do you reuse the rubbers?

Great video! I'm just starting to get into canning and I love the idea of reducing waste! Thanks for sharing your experience and info! What should I look for so far as brand and size for a glass lid for a modern wide mouth mason jar? There's the Ball no 10 for regular mouth modern jars. Did Ball also make a glass lid that fits modern wide mouth jars?

I know this is an older video but I have found there are two kinds of viceroy rubbers. One is kind of orangish in colour and the other is more reddish. I have great success with the darker reddish and less seals with the orange ones. I don’t know why.

If you have a seal on a zinc lid, you shouldn’t be able to turn the lid easily to open the jar. You should have to split the tab on the seal and hear the hiss. Good question!!

Now I just need to find some seals and some stuff to can in them. Where do you find good deals on food to can ? I figured cranberries would be on sale around this time but seems they're holding out for the winter holidays yet. Also you mentioned some canning groups you are a part of l, could you share where those are? Thank you!!

You might try ebay for wire bales. Otherwise I’d check at flea markets.
