This is amazing! I inherited a ton of zinc and porcelain lids with nos rubbers. It's kinda hard to get good info about how to can with them. All the FB groups are gloom and doom about them. I love vintage jars, and now I have more courage to pick them up at sales. Random - I'm also a nurse in Indiana! :-D

This came up on my side bar and I'm so glad it did! I have some old /vintage jars and those rubbers that you used on the zinc lid coffee jars (3 new/old packages!) THis will be fun to try and can with them. I thank you for your little talk at the front- I have been canning for years but after watching some of the canning videos they have me questioning some of my canning. Yes we need to be careful but I think sometimes the US thinks they know all!

The guy gave them to me!! 😊 I think because I knew what they were and he was impressed! Lol So, again, thank you! P.s. ... I really like your collage of lids and boxes!

Hi, I’m from the UK, and I have vintage jars dating back from the late 1930’s to 1980’s. They are various European brands: British - Kilner; Foresters; and the Co-op with glass lids and rubber gaskets. French - La Parfait clip jars (aka wire bail); La Meilleur recently acquired and searching for the wire clip and gaskets to fit. More recently non vintage has included German Weck and Italian Bormioli jars. I have canned successfully with the vintage British ones (which happens to be the majority of my jars as I have be collecting them for years at various boot sales (aka thrift markets) and done a test run with the La Parfait one which incidentally can be used in the pressure canner (I just had a fight to open them because they sealed very well). My real issue is getting hold of more of the gaskets (aka seals), but I have a cunning plan which I may share once I tried it out. I’m even collecting additional glass lids and using them on the modern Kilner regular mouths with gaskets and have used them successfully on them. I was wondering if the La Parfait and or Weck rubber gaskets would fit some of your bail jars, as they do various sizes that just may fit. Enjoyed your video and it is nice to see other people also doing like me and using what they got and or can get hold off to preserve food.

I live in the U.S. , last year a grocery store had Kilner jars and replacement gasket. I stock up on as many as I could afford. They’re expensive on Amazon. One thing I like about Kilner jars is that they use stainless steel. Over the years I have collected many jars from the thrift stores. It has been great!

I’m not sure if they would fit. My favorite place to find the old style rubbers is EBay. People sell them as new old stock. You can search “vintage canning supplies” and find a lot.

I enjoyed this comment and the reply about kilner jars which I am going to now check out. Wonder if any of you have seen on YT her homestead skills and Rosered homestead have both used the rubbers from Tattler and harvest guard with the current tin flats, last time I saw they were still holding at six months. I would definitely try that as I have had more losses with the "re useable" plastic lids after they sealed, than I have re using the used tin lids.

I have watched canning videos in different countries. They reuse ♻️ different jars all the time. Also the lids are called lug lids and they can be replaced when needed. I think why companies no longer want to put their food in jars, is because they’re heavy and the weight. The cost of transportation is high!🙁

You can can in the wired jar (your green) if you use the like “Le Parfait” see the video on how to can with those type of jars. Great video. Easy to do and get a seal. The key is to let them cool fully inside the canner the next day then release the side clip and hold the jar up like the Crown/Corona jars. Do not place the metal clip back on (just like a ring on a mason jar).

I use the vintage glass lids. I’m finding them and the jars on Kijiji or in antique stores. The cheapest place I’ve found them are estate sales. The rubber seals, here in Canada, are still sold in Canadian Tire. If you do use the vintage jars, only use them in water bath…lady I bought them from said that the pressure canner is too much for them. Those ‘thicker’ rings, don’t put them in the dishwasher, they will rust.

Is there anyplace you know of that makes and sell new were bales? Bales are all rusty and weak. My mother left me a ton of those type of jars. My wife gave away all my regular type canning jars to a ex girlfriend of mine. The ex girlfriend has passed away and so did my jars.

You might try ebay for wire bales. Otherwise I’d check at flea markets.
