I have no use at all for a gun unless its a Nerf gun or BB gun, But I have tryed a few guns on a range/club, to my surprise I was able to get tighter groups with a big revolver or a Ruger .22 LR. Im quite small so a light gun with no kickback or a big gun heavy as F. I was surprised Thought a Sig or Glock was the right one, nope
@1968alaskanАй бұрын
You are exactly right. You hit the nail on the head, and that is why we have so many different guns. (tools) Some are made to hunt with, Some are made to have fun with (range guns), Some are just for collectors. I too enjoy a small .22 caliber. (for plinking and fun!) Ammo is less expensive also. I hear people asking what is the best gun, or what should be your first gun? Only you will know. You are right on the heavy part. I'm a large frame guy and shooting those bigger calibers doesn't bother me, but if my wife tried shooting one, I'd be afraid the kick back might just knock her out! :-)

Awesome overview '1968. I'm by nature a semi-automatic guy, but it's mostly because I haven't explored revolvers in depth. Of course for concealed carry in a more urban/suburban environment the extra capacity in magazines is a plus. But . . . looking down the barrel of a 8 inch .44 barrel is a factor too! Do you find the extra long tail of the S&W hammer gives you better/quicker manipulation than the Taurus? Curious.
@1968alaskanАй бұрын
I personally don't notice much if any difference in the hammers. Many cary semi-auto 10mm up here. Many a conversation/arguments start on the semi-auto vs revolver. Semi-auto can carry more but have been known to fail (jam, striker considerations, cold weather problems on slide, etc.) I go with the revolver for bear defense, ...usually! I do carry a 10mm when in more of a black bear environment and when like at the cabin a long gun is close by for backup.

I don’t think we think of these things the same. A cartridge is just a vessel for powder and a bullet. 300 WSM holds 64-70gr of the powder of your choice typically. It can be outfitted with whatever .308” bullet you want, from 110gr @ 3850fps to 230gr @ 2800fps. 300blk, 308, 30-06, 300wsm etc. all use the same bullet, difference is how much powder is behind it. Shoulder profile also plays into accuracy a bit, of which 300 WSM holds the record at 1000yds for group size. I push 185gr burgers ~3050fps. Thats more than enough to take any game on the continent. If a 7mm can take game, a 7.62 can take the same game. Hope I’m explaining this right.
@1968alaskanАй бұрын
Totally agree. A casing is just a vessel. A short action casing is shorter and wider causing the powder to burn different than a long action casing. With that, I've taken more big game with my .270 than any other rifle. Why? I had it the longest, and never could afford different rifles while raising my children. Simple as that. We all have our favorites, and when you find something that works, I tend to keep using it. Thanks for your comment!
@moonray1276Ай бұрын
Hmmm. The difference is the performance downrange. If they're all shooting the same round then the difference on impact reflects the best performance. Bullets need specific factors to optimise their performance. Each of these can probably deliver the same energies or velocities downrange but at different distances depending on the velocity they travel at. No doubt the 300wsm can make it go faster and stretch out to further ranges but you must take into acount what the bullet needs to penetrate and expand on impact. If you know where this will happen then you can use any if you apply it correctly. 270 though does make a smaller hole. Need to factor that in on some applications. Point is 30-06, 300wsm, 308win, 300wm etc can do the same thing but at different ranges up to the point where they lose the energy needed.
@nicsu2128Ай бұрын
@@moonray1276 What I’m saying is a 185gr .30 caliber bullet moving 3150fps is going to deliver the same terminal performance no matter what case it was in before it was shot. Providing the case has enough powder volume to deliver those velocities. Such as 300WM, 300WSM, Sherman max, 30-06 etc. A guy at work a few months ago was going on about how he found 6.5PRC had problem taking deer for terminal reasons, that’s why he prefers 6.5CM for deer. Makes no sense. It’s fine to prefer the cartridge over PRC, but not for terminal performance. Silly.
@moonray1276Ай бұрын
@@nicsu2128 3150fps is your muzzle velocity. The point is that that's the difference between different cases. Different powders add to the mix. You need to understand the terminal performance. That's what changes. For example a 308's terminal performance at 400 to 500yds might be the same as a 300wm or 300wsm somewhere in the 700 to 800 yd range. You need to know the distance at whch the magic happens for the bullet in relation to the initial velocity. What does an FMJ at 3150fps do to a small/medium sized deer? Probably pokes a wee hole straight through it. Even a rapid expanding round might be out the other side before it has a chance to fart.

regarding work, nice thing about my current employer is they match 401k contributions 100% up to 4% of your salary and it also is vested immediately. I wish they'd match up to 6% but the immediate vesting is so good. I didn't even start saving or investing for retirement until I was 30 and started my first 'real' I.T. job. Even then I didn't pay much attention to it and wasn't contributing very much so I lost a lot of potential. Last year I finally started learning about how to better manage things, I made some changes to my IRAs, and have managed to almost double them this year. Hope it'll continue, got 25 years until retirement to play catch up.
@1968alaskan2 ай бұрын
In my early years like yourself, I made sure to capture the employer contribution. As you know, thats free money. I will tell you the single most important thing that made my retirement doable, is a budget! At 59, I had only the house payment, and utilities. This allowed me to really save. i.e. I'm putting almost 25% of my paycheck into savings and I think 22% into 401K contribution. Again, was not able to do that till about 59 or 60! NO debt is the key to maximize your returns for retirement. The sooner you get to that position and jumpstart that 401K the better off you will be later in life. Cold, cold wind can really knock down the Sp.Grav's. Do you use No-Ox on the terminals? Shine 'em up w/ scotchbrite and grease 'em w/ No-Ox and it really keeps the white fuzz down. Wanted to see the equalizer chg results! Good Luck, G-d Bless.

The box is lined with 2 inches of insulation. It has a piece of 2" PVC pipe that goes from the inside of the cabin and into the box. My thought was to put a fan there and push the cabin heat into the box. That didn't work to well, if at all @ 20 below! I now don't use the batteries, once the daylight can't keep them charged. i.e. I run a generator only when I need it, in the winter months. I do need to do a charge on them every 3 months or so, like you say cold brings that gravity down! As long as voltage is up, they won't freeze. Much like your car battery. Hope that helps. If the cabin stays heated year round, lithium is the way to go, or even a glass-mat sealed. No gassing. Hope this helps.

@@1968alaskan Last year I "inherited" 3 AGM's, and they are wonderful. However, the temperature factor is a killer. Using two different gensets and moved both cranker batteries into the house. Do you think the slightest trickle from the solar array, combined with a dynamite insulating blanket might forestall the rapid decline of charge?
@1968alaskan3 ай бұрын
Personally, I don't. The best way is to have them inside and vented to outside. Since I'm not living there 24x7, Its not always heated. So inside and outside are the same temp at times. If I was there say for 3 weeks at a time, then heat the cabin for a few days, and then throw the breaker and put a load on them, they would be fine. Cold is a killer. I just throw the breaker and let them sit, in the winter. Nothing in, Nothing out. I do turn the system on to see the status of charge, and then charge them if needed.
