I have an FT3 and a Nikkormat EL that I bought new in the 1970s. Meter out on the FT3, but both still work great. Just wanted to mention that the stop-down button on the FT3 is more for checking DOF than metering, so it’s still functional. Having used all of the older Nikons from that time, the indexing requirement to mount lenses was irritating at first, but you got used to it with use. Bargain lenses for it are found on lots of sites and may be better options if the Soligor is less than stellar. Good review though. I never liked the slider to change ISO though.

LEICA S3 is my workhorse, and I will say, the LEICA-T is STILL, used all the time coupled with a silver 35mm summicron- replacing the urge to use the iPhone. also, the algorithm on insta favors the file size** without compression. crazy times we're in. PS you can upgrade the LEICA-T internal memory, disassembly is easy, all to swap a MICRO-SD card :)

@Oh Aces ... I have come across a brand new in box (new old stock, never shot) for £650, and wondered if you thought it was still worth considering (Mattias Burling still thinks it should be loved) as a possible purchase in 2024 now that there are more optiona on the glass front ??

I think the prices are overinflated right now. I got mine for like $450 years ago, but it has a stuck battery, so no external charging. I also need to sell it now that I need to reinvest the money in to film projects. I think for that much $ you can get a used Fuji with better colors, and much cheaper native glass. That said you won't be happy if your heart is set on the T.

I love the leica t , I upgraded the firmware , I upgraded the internal memory and wrote an article on leica rumors about it , the t is magical , the back screen is amazing , if you use manual lenses on it , I shhoot street on it everyday with a 90 mm 1.25 lens you swipe right and the whole screen goes into 16x9 mode , the pop up flash is amazing and has a great throw and nice fill , battery life is 250-300 shots the sensor is so rich with color and sharp and the leica stack is thinner than the fujifilms giving you more 3d pop ! , you can lock out the screen while shooting and the sigma lenses are amazing , getting a autofocus for this price is insane ! the t didn't have wifi though , you needed a phone hotspot of connect it to a router to communicate to it , the batteries are still expensive for it and since people are talking about the price went up again , i love the fujifilm x trans 1 sensor the colors are my fav but Id say leica wins this one for being so crazy and good to use in hand i love it

Older lenses like that are not so difficult to disassemble and clean. Unless the fungus has etched the coating, the repair is complete. I inherited my dad's FTn which he bought at the PX in Okinawa along with a 50mm f/1.4 lens (I also have) that cost his entire monthly salary. My mom, back stateside living on a base with a toddler was livid. Some 60 years later, I think all is forgiven now. I used that camera growing up. Back around 2017, I arranged dual layovers in Tokyo so I could drop off and pick up the camera and lens from a repair shop run by retired Nikon engineers and technicians. Almost everyone there was in their 70's or 80's, working part time continuing their passion. When I went to pick up the camera, they gave me a little baggy of a slightly corroded plate and some contacts for the meter they replaced. They were curious why it might be so corroded and I explained the camera was on a sailboat for 2 years in Central America in 1979-80. The Nikkormat FTn isn't a tank, it's a battleship.

What a story! I recently got my hands on a Nikon F photomic FOR FREE! The owner just asked that I repair and reuse it, and I got it working, with a few hiccups still needing resolution. It was also purchased on a PX (Vietnam) and was traded to the guy who sent it to me for a Triumph motorcycle. It still needs a thorough mirrorbox repair but I got it back to the point where the shutter is accurate and this thing would still run if I was "in the field", and it was all I had. Battleships Indeed!

Nice video! I've got a P and a IIIA (also a 1936 Contax III, but I haven't shot them side by side). The P is undoubtedly a nice camera, but there is a sense of bulk that it has that the IIIA does not. Personally I prefer the IIIA, largely because of the mechanical feel, which is quite sublime in my opinion. The P feels a bit more like an SLR, and while not quite as dense as the IIIA, the feel in the hand of the IIIA is superior. Two things: 1. The 50/1.8 isn't strictly a Zeiss formula, it's a slightly modified double gauss/Planar, which is basically the Tessar of high speed lenses, that is to say, almost everything faster than 2.8 is a double gauss of some sort, just like nearly every 50, 2.8 or slower is usually a Tessar. The Canon 50/1.5 however is a Sonnar copy, which was specifically Zeiss. 2. If you want a better viewfinder from a Canon Barnack copy, the IVSb2, IIS2, IID2, and IIF2 all have an improved VF and use the modern geometric shutter scale (the II s using 1/500 as the top speed) going 1/ 8, 15, 30, 60, 125, 250, etc vs 1/ 8, 25, 40, 60, 100, 200. I've never held an M3, and don't need to, this and the Contax scratch the itch, with far more character and better looks in my opinion. If interested in Zeiss glass, you can also adapt Contax/Kiev RF glass using a coupled adapter to LTM. It opens up a world of cheap glass!
@oh_aces
@oh_aces 2 ай бұрын
Wow. That's such great info and Im going to pin it to the top! I didnt know much about that 1.8 past the likely Zeiss origins and that it was likely a planar design. The IIIA does in fact feel like a secret masterpiece. The shutter topping out at the same levels as a modern mechanical Leica is also a huge deal. I really am going to get some contax glass adapted to LTM at some point, but now I want that IVSb2 badly. It's incredible that these fully mechanical brass cameras are still churning through film as if they rolled off the line last year.

the canon 50/1.8 is stellar on film. I don't really use it at 1.8, only from F2 and smaller. On digital it's fine but I have used it almost exclusively on film. You will need a Leica thread mount to Leica M adapter. They are cheap and easily available. Just check to see which ones have reviews that indicate whether they scratched the mount on users' cameras. Some of the cheaper adapters have very sharp edges so you'll have to read up a bit.
