7:35 reminds me of the mid-1950s. 125 car coal train traveling parallel to the NJ turnpike in Seacaucus. I had seen the train traveling faster than the vehicles on the turnpike. I was excited and pointing, and then I realized we were in a traffic jam directly over the tunnel entrance the tracks lead to. The engineer waved to me as I waved back.

@RustyDreamsGarage sorry to offend, but just the sound of those magnificent steam locomotives has me turning up the sound as I watch this fantastic footage. I also watched your other video of the 1218 and the 611 which just has the sounds of those magnificent engines and I especially enjoyed them double heading, footage that I had never seen before. I also had both these locomotives in HO scale on my layout which brings the enjoyment even more. I have just subscribed to your channel and hopefully you will present more such footage. The narration is excellent to learn more about the American railroads during their heyday.

On these older na indirect injection diesels I've heard it's smart to lower the compression ratio when you boost them. At least with the 6.9 / 7.3 international family. Is it the same with the Detroit?
@RustyDreamsGarageАй бұрын
@@sabbath7081 only if you get stupid with boost. This doesn’t make enough boost to really need anything extra. Enough to notice the difference though

@RustyDreamsGarage 2 years ago I bought a 6.9 diesel 86 Ford f250 and someone put a banks on it years ago and switched from 355 gears to 410, it doesn't seem to make a lot of boost but it makes a lot of power, they said it was dealer installed and warrantied but the head bolts look original, makes me wonder since it only has 180,000 miles on it if it will become an issue I don't pull any weight with it and I don't work it really hard so I'm probably going to be okay. But it does definitely get up and go compared to na 6.9's

It is actually the Union Pacific big boy that is the most powerful. But you’re right, this engine was extremely powerful.
@RustyDreamsGarageАй бұрын
@@RAlanMead the BigBoy boiler could fit inside the Allegheny. Speeds 30mph-50mph the Allegheny rates substantially higher than the BigBoy on tractive effort. The BigBoy has the win from 10-20mph for tractive effort but overall the Allegheny is bigger, faster, and more powerful.

Yes this would be nice to see 1218 again but they won't let 611 run anywhere on the system so what chance does the 1218 have. If you look at all steam engine that they are rebuilding now they have to be converted from coal to oil and NS & CSX are scared to death to run any steam train on there lines. Two to Four Million Dollars is a lot of money just to run these trains on some branch line like N&W 611 has been doing up in PA.
@anthonycook5238Ай бұрын
In few years the management will change an there rules will change but the switch to oil is the future nothing we can do about that , it’s ultimately the best option
@kazanu23Ай бұрын
The hope for 1218 to get another chance to run is definitely high. In my opinion, since the VMT is focused on 611, it would be optimal to give the engine to an organization like the RRHMA that can better handle the move and, more importantly, the cost.
@anthonycook5238Ай бұрын
Never will happen , she was in the middle of a rebuild when they shut the steam program down and a bunch of parts were lost everywhere so it’s basically impossible
@kazanu23Ай бұрын
@anthonycook5238 fair, but you never truly know
@RustyDreamsGarageАй бұрын
All the parts that were taken off are parts that would have to be replaced anyways. The 1218 could be restored, but highly unlikely.
@anthonycook5238Ай бұрын
@ and the parts were lost, and we never returned. Some are still sitting in Alabama. There isn’t blueprints or catalogs for the steam engines, bro you can’t just make these parts. It is never going to run again. The cost time and energy that would be needed to manufacturer after these parts is just astronomical
@RustyDreamsGarageАй бұрын
@ the nwhs has ALL the drawings. Yes, they can be made. Having been there when 1218 was brought to Roanoke. Most of the parts were kept in the boxcar that was kept behind the engine. The estimated cost for rebuild was less than $2,000,000. NS sold two paintings for $1.5 mil when the 611 was rebuilt. That was my argument all along. The 611 rebuild was an NS rebuild. It would never have happened without them. If for some reason NS decides they want the 1218. They will rebuild it.

They certainly are Cleveland four-barrel heads on the left however they're not the Boss 302/351 heads because they have pedestals notched for the fulcrum non-adjustable sled lifters that go with a hydraulic cam. The Boss heads were the full monty... they had quench Chambers 4 Barrel Runners and studs for adjustable lifters since all Boss Motors back then ran a solid lifter cam
