2:01 The nicest he’s ever been to his own kid, if only it was like that through the whole series Edit: I’m getting prepared to be absolutely destroyed in the comments by a certain someone saying “how can you say that when you only watch one clip of the episode wahhhh wahhh cry about it”

the shot at 0:54 always makes me cry because it shows that lisa and homer mirroring each other. homer sighs because he is connecting to his daughter and feeling her sadness. they both have their heads turned down, facing into reflective surfaces as they "reflect" - lisa is in the mirror, focused on her own grief, but homer is looking out the window, imagining a world outside her childhood home, where lisa will find the happiness and connection she can't get as a powerless kid in a family that doesn't understand her. it's only on screen for a second but it's a simple yet powerful image, representing that even though your family love and care you, sometimes you just can't get what they need from them, and they don't know how to give what you need. it's a very honest, bittersweet symbol of family life, and lisa episodes are some of my favourites because they're full of moments like this.

Ironic that Homer is both at his worst and at his best as a father in here. His worse moment was his total lack of interest in Lisa's devastation once Mr. Bergstrom had left, his best when he apologizes to her later in her room and plays with her and hugs her. He also cheers up Bart after the boy loses the election when he mentions Bart will have more time for himself rather than have to work twice as hard in school as class president, and gently places back Maggie's pacifier into her mouth and she goes back to sleep.

Marvelous scene, at a time when Homer and Marge still were parents figures, and the Simpsons kids acted like proper kids. Yeah I absolutely adore Lisa and Bart from the first 3-4 seasons. They were so childlike and so unconventional. Lisa as a little Blue girl, who tried to understand the world more than the adults around her, always from a curious and precocious child prospective, keeping an adorable naivety. And Bart, well, he was a total pain in the ass, wild and reckless to the insensitivity, yet wise and caring when he had time to think. So childlike yet so charismatic. In the 90s he was the public enemy number 1, the bad boy every parent hated and kids loved.

Sometimes when I watch this scene I start to become emotional. It never made me shed tears 😢 as a kid but now as an adult it makes me tear up. It's because I can relate with it more. I understand Homer needed to empathize with Lisa on how she felt. Homer spoke from the heart and his words were humble. Homer knew he made a huge mistake but made up for it. The Classic Simpsons was just pure gold. It was heart-warming. It demonstrated itself to be captivating. It's sad to have seen The Simpsons slide into such a bad and unfunny show. The new Simpsons is terrible.

Homer saying he didn't lose anybody special is harsher to look back at when we learn about what happened with his mother.

I’m curious what the writers had in mind for his mother this early in the show’s run. Grandpa Simpson was there from season 1, so I’m sure Homer’s mother crossed their minds. Did they just assume she was dead?

@@JohnDoe-gk7ok Considering that here Homer says that everyone important for him is under his roof, even excluding his father, I think it must not be taken too literal, it was just a way for him to connect with Lisa (admitting that he can't understand her pain, which is the best thing to say in such situations) and in a way also underlying how much he loves his family.

I know the main focus is on Homer's reconciliation with Lisa (as it should be), but my low-key favorite bit of this is Homer's advice to Bart. Sometimes, you lose. It happens, and it sucks when it does. But it's important to maintain perspective on it. In the grand scheme of things, something like a 4th-grade class presidency doesn't actually matter. And realizing that is an important step in getting back up and brushing yourself off after you've been knocked down. Good on Homer for helping Bart learn that lesson ^_^

While not the most regarded episode compared to so many others, you can't deny it had a great amount of laughs and a great amount of emotion to leave on a high note in the end. It's little moments like this that make the Simpsons one of the best shows of the 90s.

These older seasons of The Simpsons were the best imo. They actually had stories about the characters and family and love and life and at the end of the episode, you felt something for them. All that's gone now and in it's place we have Family Guy-esque episodes of random comedy.

"Now, you'll have lots of special people in your life, Lisa. There's probably some place where they all get together and the food is real good, and guys like me are serving drinks." Even when she's 8 years old, he's realizing he probably has no place in her future. But he wants her to be happy, in that future and while she's still under his roof. It's so sad, and sweet.
