I think the most beautiful yet sad part about this scene is how Homer doesn't think highly of himself. As a kid I thought he was just lambasting himself to cheer up Lisa but as an adult I realise he really thought of himself as the kind of good-for-nothing person "serving drinks" to successful people who get together with many friends eating good food, and he had all the faith in the world that Lisa would become one of the successful people.
@engg84
@engg84 Жыл бұрын
It's also sad how he thinks when she does meet that special person and is successful, he won't be able to be there with her. 😢 It makes the ending of Lisa's Wedding all the more impactful. Lisa gets a chance to be with the man of her dreams and live a successful, cultured life, but at the mere suggestion that Homer will no longer be a part of that life, she cancels the wedding without hesitation. To her, Homer will never just be the guy serving drinks.

It’s nice to chat on this page also thanks for the upload yeah I agree Homer and Lisa have such a wonderful bond between them while in the early episodes the Homer/Lisa relationship was a bit rocky as Homer was negligent and misunderstanding towards Lisa in the early episodes such as this episode Homer vs Lisa and the 8th commandment Stark Raving Dad Lisa’s Pony and Lisa The Greek there was always mutual respect and they always made up with each other by the end of the episode they always had sweet emotional endings and made Homer feel like a loving caring father which made the relationship between them a wonderful bond between them
@aristrosa

@@mattmcmanus3693 the classics always had real love and unforgettable moments. That made me love the dynamic between father and daughter. I wish the writer's could still write good episodes that showed this type of family love again. Miss the glory days that made this so iconic and inspirational. Wish it could be this good again but new writers have other ideas. Unfortunately still can't beat the original homer simpson of the 90s.

@@mattmcmanus3693 I know political correctness is a very big thing in entertainment nowadays. But I feel like it makes everything that was enjoyable before feel more meaningless now. Because the current simpsons creators have recently decided to replace voice actors with new ones. Like for dr Hibbert and apu and Carl and probably many others. I just don't understand why after so many years. That changes like this is happening now do think this unusual decision will make any difference to the Simpsons at all??. Just not sure how I feel about the current simpsons situation.

@@aristrosa I agree changing the writers has had a massive negative impact unfortunately I hope the Simpsons stays on the air for the next 15 or 20 years either when they get to 1000 episodes or their 50th season anniversary in 2039 however I can’t see it happening unfortunately hopefully the Simpsons changes the writers it would certainly give the show more appeal like it used to but don’t think it will sadly

@@mattmcmanus3693 yes you are right some changes aren't always a positive thing. But who knows what other changes the Simpsons will face. I'm still hoping for a simpsons movie part two. And everybody starts to age and grow older and face new challenges together. I wonder if that will ever happen. I know disney is mainly focused on the marvel universe. But I hope they can try to give simpsons another movie. And maybe show new character development for everyone especially homer. 😊 P.s it's awesome to hear from you once more thanks for always being amazing. 👍

Honestly I really understand the way Lisa feels. I had a therapist and he was my Mr Bergstrom. It’s uncanny how similar both of them are, he was interested in the arts, in politics, he was emotionally and socially intelligent, kind, gentle. I felt guilty for it but it secretly made me resent both of my parents because I wished that they were more like him. But Homer was right, you always find your people in the end, and I will always remember my therapist fondly, he definitely helped me develop my character in so many ways.

I know the main focus is on Homer's reconciliation with Lisa (as it should be), but my low-key favorite bit of this is Homer's advice to Bart. Sometimes, you lose. It happens, and it sucks when it does. But it's important to maintain perspective on it. In the grand scheme of things, something like a 4th-grade class presidency doesn't actually matter. And realizing that is an important step in getting back up and brushing yourself off after you've been knocked down. Good on Homer for helping Bart learn that lesson ^_^

oof, if you have a show remain on for more than three decades, decline is inevitable. However, certain episodes should still have been avoided. Such as "Homer vs. Dignity" where Homer gets molested by a panda, "Strong Arms of the Ma," where Marge's story of recovering nosedive into her indulging in steroids and even raping Homer, "The Principal and the Pauper" and so on. I will freely admit, the decline is a bit stark, and only partially excused by the duration of the show's run time.

Marvelous scene, at a time when Homer and Marge still were parents figures, and the Simpsons kids acted like proper kids. Yeah I absolutely adore Lisa and Bart from the first 3-4 seasons. They were so childlike and so unconventional. Lisa as a little Blue girl, who tried to understand the world more than the adults around her, always from a curious and precocious child prospective, keeping an adorable naivety. And Bart, well, he was a total pain in the ass, wild and reckless to the insensitivity, yet wise and caring when he had time to think. So childlike yet so charismatic. In the 90s he was the public enemy number 1, the bad boy every parent hated and kids loved.

the shot at 0:54 always makes me cry because it shows that lisa and homer mirroring each other. homer sighs because he is connecting to his daughter and feeling her sadness. they both have their heads turned down, facing into reflective surfaces as they "reflect" - lisa is in the mirror, focused on her own grief, but homer is looking out the window, imagining a world outside her childhood home, where lisa will find the happiness and connection she can't get as a powerless kid in a family that doesn't understand her. it's only on screen for a second but it's a simple yet powerful image, representing that even though your family love and care you, sometimes you just can't get what they need from them, and they don't know how to give what you need. it's a very honest, bittersweet symbol of family life, and lisa episodes are some of my favourites because they're full of moments like this.

Ironic that Homer is both at his worst and at his best as a father in here. His worse moment was his total lack of interest in Lisa's devastation once Mr. Bergstrom had left, his best when he apologizes to her later in her room and plays with her and hugs her. He also cheers up Bart after the boy loses the election when he mentions Bart will have more time for himself rather than have to work twice as hard in school as class president, and gently places back Maggie's pacifier into her mouth and she goes back to sleep.

I understand Homer needed to empathize with Lisa on how she felt. Homer spoke from the heart and his words were humble. Homer knew he made a huge mistake but made up for it. The Classic Simpsons was just pure gold. It was heart-warming. It demonstrated itself to be captivating. It's sad to have seen The Simpsons slide into such a bad and unfunny show. This went from being a show that was wholesome and funny to being a Disney sellout.

Does “Lisa’s Substitute” have any appearances by characters voiced by Hank Azaria?

If there is no Wiggum, Carl, Lou, Moe or APU in the episode then there will be no Hank Azaria in the early seasons.

Homer saying he didn't lose anybody special is harsher to look back at when we learn about what happened with his mother.

I’m curious what the writers had in mind for his mother this early in the show’s run. Grandpa Simpson was there from season 1, so I’m sure Homer’s mother crossed their minds. Did they just assume she was dead?

@@JohnDoe-gk7ok Considering that here Homer says that everyone important for him is under his roof, even excluding his father, I think it must not be taken too literal, it was just a way for him to connect with Lisa (admitting that he can't understand her pain, which is the best thing to say in such situations) and in a way also underlying how much he loves his family.
