One of Motherwell's major achievements. He called paper "the most sensitive of painting surfaces", and his love of paper is especially keen in this series of ink paintings. His love of paper was pointed up when a friend gave him a selection of various handmade papers and he said "They're ravishing. All these beg to be marked on." This discussion with Katy Rogers was a revelation to me; I had not considered that the work of his then wife Helen Frankenthaler was a great inspiration to him. She was staining paint into raw canvas, making the paint and the support one totality. So it is with these ink paintings, where the ink was totally absorbed into the paper. By returning to his roots in psychic automatism he was able to break a serious painting block that he had at that time.

Beautifully executed and scary as Hell. The perfect artwork for today's America and by extension the rest of the world as well. We get sucked in by this visual Xanax, perfect in its pristine surfaces and visions of a hyper-cliched world of childhood familiars. While Ryden has the chops to pull off this look and was certainly an originator, he has spawned a horde of infantile imitators whose wide glassy eyed creations are everywhere. Make America fuzzy again.

Liam, why are you giving away your working meathods? You dont need imitators or competitors. Missing from the tool kit is a harmonica and drum sticks ,rooster, snake and owl. The book is alittle over the top. That chick at the gallery was pushing my buttons - really snotty ! I meant well , you would have liked my painting. If you are interested in my status (as it were) see the video "institutionalized " by sucidal tendencies congrats on your work , it's like a giant tab of acid. Ciao , SAN JO !

Reminiscent of Albert Oehlen with the flair of of a de Kooning. The usage of ink to form contrast should be varied between paintings (25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and so on.) 😊

Wow, I love your work. I love the vibrations in each canvas. I too must throw it on completely intuitively otherwise if I plan ahead it always just falls apart. Your studio is huge and really something. Mine is in a tiny guest bedroom but it works. God bless…S. R. Wolf Studio Arts
