One of Motherwell's major achievements. He called paper "the most sensitive of painting surfaces", and his love of paper is especially keen in this series of ink paintings. His love of paper was pointed up when a friend gave him a selection of various handmade papers and he said "They're ravishing. All these beg to be marked on." This discussion with Katy Rogers was a revelation to me; I had not considered that the work of his then wife Helen Frankenthaler was a great inspiration to him. She was staining paint into raw canvas, making the paint and the support one totality. So it is with these ink paintings, where the ink was totally absorbed into the paper. By returning to his roots in psychic automatism he was able to break a serious painting block that he had at that time.
