If someone asks for my opinion and thoughts I'll give it, but in terms of how a model is built, painted and weathered, I'm not going to tell someone how to enjoy the box of plastic that he paid for with their hard earned money.

Modeling is a hobby, it is fun, when you take a hobby too seriously you have some deep seated issues. It is not life or death. I have been building models since I was 10 yrs old, I am now 77. I seldom use an airbrush because I like hand painting. If it is not "perfect " well too bad. Let's just have fun.

Great video! I returned to the hobby in 2007 and even back then I would see “the hobby is dying” posts in model forums. This has got to be the longest death on record. All the while we have been showered with unprecedented releases in a platinum age of the hobby. My take? Enjoy the journey.

My hobby…my rules…nothing I build will be in the Smithsonian. I do it because it gives me joy and is quite therapeutic. I’ve been in clubs and “schooled”by those who were quite “opinionated” on color and weathering. Sometimes I understood they were being helpful but others were shall we say…somewhat condescending. Build and enjoy what it brings for you!

Great video to get me thinking. I’ve just been modeling for two years, so a novice. I retired from military/commercial flying for 42 years, so I am a bit sensitive to over weathering, but overall, I’m impressed with how many modelers get it right. I kind of think the airplanes looked cleanish, but I ruined several uniform shirts with just a slight shoulder rub while doing preflight walk around.

There is another genre you didn't mention which has a large very dedicated fan base, but seams to be ignored by the others (armor, ships, aircraft) and that is Sci-Fi/fantasy, of which I love building. The others seam to look down upon us Sci-Fi/Fantasy geeks, or at least it feels that way. We have our passive aggressive rivet counters as well, the ones who have to make their version of the space ship exactly like the filming model with every little detail in place. I had one guy comment "not cannon ,but pretty" I just had to laugh. I build to what I like because I'm the only one who has to live with the model when it's done.

Some companies still use mould release agent on some of their kits, Takom being one. Airfix did, but I'm not sure they do with their newer plastic. I just check the kit and will only wash it if it's noticeably greasy. You say that glue melts the plastic so oil isn't going to affect it, but some people use CA for the majority of their construction.

Your comments on reboxing were good, but while you had a screenshot of Scalemates, you didn't mention how it is go-to site to avoid getting burned. About a dozen years ago, I saw a Revell kit of an interesting subject at a local hobby shop. I bought it, and when I looked at it at home, it seemed pretty crude. I then checked Scalemates and discovered that the kit was from the 1970s and wasn't even an original Revell kit. I always check Scalemates now whenever it's a Revell kit. They are the worst.

When companies USED to do it, I was building and learning history, these days it's a parts list.(1967) My 2 bottles of Pledge are doing fine (20 years now) I do feel if your represented model came with certain markings, it should have them. Older re-boxings should have a label. As for weathering - whatever makes you happy. When is the last time you built a PERFECT kit? Finger pointing is not constructive criticism and belongs on the playground...actually NOT there either. If you maybe want to try this next time, it might work better....Etc. Rivet counters are just anal retentives clamoring for attention. Dane

You're right about plastic modelers and railroad modelers, even though in areas like weathering and dioramas, there are definite overlaps. When I returned to modeling in the 1990s, I think that the perception was that IPMS was for aircraft builders and armor (reluctantly) and not for car modelers. That divide has been erased to some extent, and the IPMS chapter I belong to welcomes auto modelers with open arms. The next barrier to come down in the future will be outreach to the Gundam modelers.

"OVER-WEATHERING", ESPECIALLY, on model Aircraft... Aircraft Crew Chiefs TOOK PRIDE IN "THEIR Aircraft", AND THEY WANTED THEIR PILOTS AND AIRCREW TO BE SAFE and PROUD OF THE AIRCRAFT THEY SERVED IN. In regards to Scale modeling and weathering, I would like to quote the LATE, GREAT SHEPARD PAINE, "Less Is MORE..." An adjunct to this particular observation made by Shep, is another one of his GEMS, "ARMOR gets FILTHY; AIRCRAFT MERELY GET DIRTY..." Sound advice, I think... I've been building, detailing, painting and yes, weathering my models since 1957, so I think I might have learned a few things in my time; RESTRAINT being one of them...

I'm an airplane modeler. I'm also a recently retired commercial pilot that spent most of my adult life in the warbird community. I spent four years in the Navy as an F-14 mechanic before taking my GI Bill and going to flight school. So I have worked on and flown actual combat aircraft. The whole argument over how much an aircraft is "weathered" is absolutely stupid. It is also laughable when I see the "proper" color argument. I have had disagreements with people online who have told me I'm wrong about proper color, weathering ect when they have absolutely zero experience in the real world and I have actually flown or maintained the exact aircraft they are telling me I'm wrong about. I was in VF-1 (Navy F-14) during Desert Storm. Two other guys and myself painted the real Tomcat 103 which had the only F-14 air to air kill of the war. The aircraft has been put out by several model companies in it's Desert Storm trim the day Lt. Broce shot down that Russian Hind. I had a guy argue with me when I posted a photo of the 1/48 Tamiya one I had built on a FB group that I had painted it wrong. I was dumfounded. I told the guy I actually painted the real aircraft and he called me a liar and made another few post about how wrong I was. People are nuts.

Howdy Shipmate! Former AT from VF-111. served just after Desert Storm during Southern Watch...can confirm, what most people THINK it should look like, and what it actually looked like were 2 completely different things...there were times where you used the last of one batch of paint and had to break open a new batch and the color was slightly different. FS was a great guide for manufacturers to start with, but it never was truly standard, and the paint you got when you ordered came from whatever manufacturer was able to do it for the cheapest at the time. You could line up 5 of our F-14A's side by side and all 5 had slight differences in color at any given time. All I can do is laugh when I see someone who has never worked up close and personal with aircraft telling other people how it SHOULD look...lol...Modeling is like horseshoes, and by default, hand grenades...close enough will always work. Hence the saying: "Close enough for government work".

It's changed out of all recognition from when I used to do it years ago. With modern CAD designed and high-tech moulded kits, 3D printing plus the plethora of "after market" greeblies, all the need for research and planning and the acquisition of multiple skills have been removed. Personally I build models as my kind of Zen. Puzzling out a particular sub assembly. How I can adapt the suggested paint scheme with what I know about the subjects history all take my mind away from the worries of the day. Something we do need to get a grip on is the skills of the particular person building the model. A school kid embarking on their first project will produce a result far different from a professional model maker working on their 100th commission.

I have a controversial opinion that critique only belongs in any hobby when a person has asked for it specifically. If they dont ask, never offer, and provide only praise. Whatever the subject, you're commenting on something made with care and effort. If you have strong beliefs about feedback being intrinsic to growth nobody is stopping you applying that to yourself. Don't inflict it on anyone else without direct request.

I still try to be accurate, but if I miss the mark it's OK. I build cause it's fun and takes me to a peaceful place while scaling + its always feels nice to finish one. HAPPY SCALING 👋

What's the whole reason for the existence of a model? To replicate the REAL THING. Otherwise, the item is just a toy. What's the whole fun in building the model? To try and replicate it as closely as the real thing. That's the fun of it. "How accurate, how real, how authentic can I make it" Its the challenge that motivates us. Anything else is just assembling.. and if that is what you like to do, go get a job at a toy factory assembling toys and get paid for it. Look I have been building models for more than 50 years... longer than you have been alive. All I can do is laugh at your top 10 list, because it's the same excuses heard all the time "It's my fucking model, I'll do it like I want" What you are really saying is " I suck, I don't want to admit it and fuck you for bringing it to my attention" I would have more respect for modelers if they would just man up and say, I suck, I'm not as good as others. I want to learn more about being better." About number 9... first, I don't build Tamyia because I refuse to mortgage my house for a fucking model. Secondly, there is a difference between a Modeler and an Artist. Anyone can be a modeler. A 5-year-old is a modeler. But modeling models IS also an ART, and being a true artist is a talent. Shep Paine is an example of that talent. Rivet counters... oh boy I hear that all the time in the railroad modeling community... again, why continue to purchase high-end models, with super detail, if you are not going to "Count that detail" It's ridiculous and grossly hypocritical to the hobby. Finally, I have no problem with over-weathering... in some cases, they should look like beat-up shit.. what I do have a problem with is over-emphasized panel lines. Thank God for IPMS, even with their drama, without them, the hobby would die. and screw that saying "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all" What you are really saying, is, I can't take criticism and I have an inferior complex. Look, Put your top 10 list to rest. It's an old rehashed list heard a million times.

While I agree with a good bunch of what you have on here, you seem to not understand that it is a hobby. I feel sorry that you cannot afford a $40 kit. Lots of modelers know they are not good. They don't have to say it repeatedly for your benefit. Are you saying i am not critiquing ipms because I am afraid of criticism? Weird flex. I thought i was just being polite... As for ipms saving the hobby, that is up for debate. Lots of people in the hobby do not have any interaction with a club but instead use social media. Also, it is called "inferiority complex."
