As always, wonderful video and conversation. Your take on views made so much sense. When I made my tag video I answered from a very narrow understanding of the question. I loved how you opened up the question much more broadly and I agree with you. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

@@books_and_bocadillos Thank you Mariandrea! I don’t blame anyone for answering the question in that way either, that’s how views are normally talked about. I just think it brings about shame to be seen trying, or caring about what people think etc, and of course we try and care, that’s only human, so I’d rather remove the shame than pretend those feelings aren’t valid… if that makes sense 😄 I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you so much for watching! 💜

It looks like you had a fun and relaxing summer. 'Move around the garden without being garroted' looks like a good laugh, but I have no idea what's going on. After watching Midsommar, I was expecting a bit more human sacrifice :) The lake is such a tranquil setting - great for reading, swimming and a bit of peace and quiet - but the feeling of being in a cabin (or tent) during a heavy downpour is hard to beat. Your bf is definitely the butterfly king, or should that be monarch, but being 'Biscuit on the forehead' champion is an accolade that's hard to surpass. The setting of your library is great and it looks so airy inside. I really liked the way you used chapters for the storytelling.

@@RDsLibrary I thought I saw a comment from you before, but it disappeared! Thank you for commenting now or again 😊 I’ve had a pretty mixed summer, but these are some of the moments I’d like to remember. There were definitely some really lovely and relaxing days, but I also just want to make it clear that these were the highlights, or the parts I filmed, as it usually is on social media. No human sacrifices though, luckily (I haven’t seen the movie, I can’t handle scary things ^^) The games were a lot of fun though! One was to back up as close as possible to the string without touching it, blindfolded of course, and the other is just to get the biscuit from forehead to mouth as quick as you can without using your hands. Very simple but very hilarious! And I agree, sumner rain is the coziest thing. Ideally I would be under a blanket on the porch, when it’s in order. I love the library too! It’s very airy and light, I would really like to spend more time there. Just because I can 😊 I hope you’ve had a nice time this summer too!

Thank you SO MUCH for the honest thoughts about views! FINALLY! Someone said it! When I do this tag I will back you up on this! LOL! You know I moan all the time about views, and then when I hear others say they don't care about views it makes me feel so "less than" for worrying about it. We all know that everyone loves views! Anyway, great video as always with lots of awesome honest thoughts. Thanks for tagging me!

Of course we love views! It's not the only thing I care about, nor do I think it's the only thing you or anyone else cares about. But of course it can dampen or lift our moods, like any other kind of result or feedback or engagement with what we have to say. I think it's only human. Getting fewer views than you'd like is like standing on a town square and everyone just passing you by without so much as looking at you. And that can be very disheartening. So don't feel less than for worrying about it. Everyone does. That being said, there's always the next video! 😊 I also find myself always wanting the next interaction, when I could spend a little more time enjoying the one I've got. Like right now, that you've left a comment. That means a lot, and so I try to spend a bit more time appreciating that and that makes me feel better. So thank you for brightening my day! And I look forward to hearing you take on these questions! Bring on the honesty! 😁 (Like you always do!) 💜

@@itsmimiduong Haha I know 😆 so stubborn! I think I’ve won now though, there hasn’t been any new nests in a while. 💪 Thank you so much 😊 I had already talked so much about all of the books in book club videos and wrapups, so I didn’t I needed to repeat myself. It’s really more of a life vlog with books in it than a reading vlog, you had a lot more to say in yours! I enjoyed that too though 😊 I’m fine with a bit of summer rain, and that one was very short. And then it’s really humid for a while and then it’s dry again! It’s nice to have some rain every now and then, because since the summer is so short here, you always feel a bit of pressure to go outside and enjoy the weather when it’s warm. And sometimes you want to do inside things! So it’s nice to get to be inside without feeling guilty about it! Also, a lot of houses here don’t have AC, so when it’s warmer than usual, like it has been in recent years, it’s really hard to get the inside to cool down, so rain or cooler weather is a great opportunity to air out the heat. I’m getting very technical, but that’s how it is haha 😂 Always keeping an eye on the weather! And it makes it greener, of course, which is nice! Haha we have GoPro that works under water! Never tried it before, but it was a lot of fun to play around with and get some new angles 😂 I love the ocean too, but I’m so scared by the power of them so I prefer lakes! I do find that things get repeated so often when I do these overlapping videos. But reading videos might be where I do our book club discussion. Our summers are scorching hot where it feels almost like you're burning up the skin because of the low humidity index. 🫠 But I love that it has you out and about for the sun! Yeah, that's what I heard is that generally it's getting warmer but most places in Europe don't have AC. Hopefully this summer hasn't been too bad! I am with you about rules being there for a reason! I feel like some things are just common sense and riding bikes in a cemetery would really bother me too! I thought this book was so beautiful and I loved how Backman (as per usual) really shows well how every person always has much more depth and background and story to them than what we see on the surface. I love what you said about younger generations! It drives me nuts how generations tend to speak so rudely and condescendingly to the next/younger generations. There is SO much the younger generations can offer and there are so many ways that the next generation will surpass prior generations (for the better). And of course ways that the younger generation can learn from older generations too. Respect goes both ways!

Respect and common sense! Really, how hard can it be?! ☺ You're so right. I hope the younger generations come with a lot of kindness and humanity, then the rest will work itself out. They'll need a lot of strength and integrity too though, or they will just be seen as weak. Oh wait, maybe that's just me 😂 I agree about Backman showing what's beneath the surface in such a beautiful way. It's very straight forward in a way, without being on the nose about it. Very carefully revealed. I really enjoyed this book, and I'm looking forward to reading more!

I have not read Parable of the Sower, but your thoughts on the book and the religious discussion make sense. I appreciate your dialogue on religion in general and also how it pertained to that book specifically. It's been over a decade since I've read 1984 I think. I also didn't really like it. I have a vague recollection that I appreciated some of his rebellious attitude and that spoke to me as someone raised in a very controlling environment. Growing up, I remember 1984 (and Fahrenheit 451) talked about as warnings from conservatives about what "the liberals" want or what they will try to do. I always heard it in context to warnings about not letting the United States get to that place. And I remember thinking it seemed a bit extreme to think that "the liberals" were close to 1984 level or Fahrenheit 451 level. And now where I am now I find it ironic that looking back so many of those controlling groups and the extreme conservatism (religiously and politically) are closer to the extremes from the books than mainstream "liberals" I was warned about. It's just quite interesting (and scary!) to think about. Also what you said about in order to be a "true" Christian you must be a Republican in the United States is SO true. It is wild!! I also didn't think that Winston and Julia had a beautiful relationship, but then again I read it when I was still in a very conservative environment so I think I was a bit shocked by the scandalous nature of their relationship. 🤣Even if a part of me admired the rebellious aspect of their pushing back against their environment. I had no idea there was a book from Julia's perspective! That would be quite interesting.
@ellenmadebookclub
@ellenmadebookclub 10 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing your perspective on 1984. That is so wild to me. I think when it comes to extreme groups like that, it almost doesn't matter if you're far left or far right or religious or what, the control and abuse (of power if not people) are the same. And it also, to me, is a sign of that the more firm someone is in their beliefs about "the other", the more dangerous territory they are in themselves. Being cautious of that which is foreign to us is one thing, but we are also naturally curious and loving... so whenever someone talks about a certain group without so much as a gray area, I'm scared. That way of thinking comes from someone who is scared as well, but like in a dog in a corner kind of way. I don't know the particulars of liberals in US politics, but it's interesting that a word that comes from the word "free" could be associated to the rigidity of 1984. It is scary to think about, like you said. It's very difficult to reason with people who literally won't see reason. I'm glad you did and do though. Now that I know you, at least a little, I can't imagine you being in that environment. I won't allow it. It is a bit funny though that you thought of Winston and Julia as scandalous! 😅 It's all relative I guess! Honestly, I was a little surprised at those scenes myself. I read very few books that have any of that, possibly a kiss, so I'm always a bit shocked and them I'm lke calm down 😂 Julia would be really interesting! I really want to read it, I just need to recharge my happy first.

Once again, it was was great to hear your reaction to the book and answers to the questions. I'm glad Ove worked out better than the other 2 books and was a hit. Re: the suicide question. I meant it in terms of storytelling, but it sounded really vague hearing it out loud :) It was my only criticism of the book. It almost became a slapstick comedy, whereby Ove tries to kill himself but gets saved at the last minute by somebody needing him. The humour didn't hit, for me, and devalued the experience, which is rare for one of his books. Stellan Skarsgård is much more how I imagine Ove than Tom Hanks. That said, I thought he was somebody in his late 70s and was surprised to find out he was quite a bit younger. I've read all of Fredrik's books except Britt-Marie Was Here. I prefer his fiction to his non-fiction 'advice'. Bear Town is my favourite, and the rest of the series is very good, IMO. I also really liked Anxious People. Ove would probably rank 5th, after these, but they're all well worth reading. I haven't read many authors who make me feel, think, laugh and empathise as much as he does.

Thank you! I could have asked for clarification on the question! I thought it was pretty straight forward at first and then I was like wait... 😂 Hopefully I managed to answer it anyway! I think the humor worked, but it wasn't the suicide aspect I found funny. The further the book went along, I felt they were just halfhearted attempts and that Ove was almost waiting and hoping to be interrupted again, even if he was muttering about it. So I didn't put too much weight on that, it was just kind of there. But I could just as easily have been annoyed by it, I was in that mood, so I get where you're coming from. Haha yes, he read a lot older than he was! And I totally agree, Skarsgård is a much better fit than Tom Hanks. But then that's Hollywood for ya :) I actually got Britt-Marie recently, so that will be read at some point as well. Although probably not before the Beartown series, I need to mix it up! I really enjoy Backman's writing, and I'm curious to see if the Beartown books have a bigger impact on me than the tv series did. I thought that was good, but I barely remember it, and I hear some people being almost ruined by it... so maybe I wasn't in a very perceptive state of mind, I don't know. We'll see!

I was actually so sad that I couldn’t like Ove (and with him the book) more even after knowing what pain he felt and where his grumpiness came from. I did understand, but just didn’t feel it I think. And because of that I just couldn’t really get into the story enough even though I normally get along well with cynicism or black humor. Maybe it was the time I read it or it was just not for me. (Agree on the MC of Yellowface, she was very annoying) 😂 I sadly didn’t love Beartown either, it was an “average” read for me, nice for entertainment but didn’t make me feel a lot. But I’m in the minority here, chances are high you’ll love it as so many others do ☺️ I on the other hand really liked Anxious People and Every Morning The Way Home Gets Longer And Longer (was that the title? not entirely sure) 😅
@ellenmadebookclub

I get that. But there is so much that goes into the reading experience, and we don't like or get along with all people, so it would be strange if we all got along and fell in love with the same characters. Sometimes it lands in the head but not the heart, and that's completely fine! It's more fun to fall in love, of course, but it's not something we can control. It might just be the current mood, or it reminds us of someone we find a bit annoying or whatever. Or sometimes I find that I care so much about someone else at the moment, I don't really have the heartspace to care as much for a fictional character. My resources are spent elsewhere :D I watched the Beartown series, and I can't remember much about it at all, or being very affected by it, so when people say it's so emotional I'm like... oh? 😂 I thought it was good, but not life changing. So I'm curious to see what I'll think of the book. I haven't been very intrigued by Anxious People, but I know people love that one too so, someday! I hadn't heard about the Way home, but that hits close to home for me, so I might try that... when I feel particularly brave :)

It was really interesting to hear your thoughts and answers to the questions, Ellen. I 'enjoyed' 1984 more than you, but my overall takeaway was that I was glad I could put the book down and walk away at the end rather than have to live in this sort of depressing world as some people still have to. The creeping dread of having to believe what you're told without thinking and not being able to trust anybody got me though the first half as the world was set up. The lack of freedom of expression, fear of being reported and false hope is what scared me most. I thought Julia was a honey trap to begin with, and it definitely wasn't a beautiful relationship by today's standards, but perhaps a rare moment of trust and honesty and the chance to be yourself was what sold it. It was a bit insta love, though. I totally agree about being told anything is 'amazing' or 'mind-blowing' because it's almost impossible to live up to that expectation. I'd heard that it was bleak and eye-opening and that's pretty much how I found it. I hope next month's books have as many interesting things to discuss but they're less of a downer :)

Thank you so much! I agree, it was definitely a releif to be able to put the book down and not live in that reality! I think there were elements though that felt a little too familiar, so they sort of stayed with me and made me feel a bit hopeless about the world. But it's also a matter of perspective, and there are so many positive things as well, this book just made me focus on the negative. Yes, the lack of freedom and constant fear of being caught was a very heavy feeling. As a bit of an anxious person, I kind of feel like that already, so maybe that was why it affected me more negatively. Haha how amazing to call the relationship in 1984 insta love 😂 The ability to be yourself is a big part of any relationship, so that makes sense. It just also felt like they didn't really care about the other person's thoughts, or like when they were talking about the Book and Julia was completely uninterested... They can obviously have different opinions and still love each other, I just thought it was a bit of a stretch to call it a beautiful relationship. They never really did much for each other, as far as I could tell. Yes, bleak and eye opening is a much better description! I would also add depressing, but maybe that's just me ^^ I've just finished Song of Achilles, which I found much more enjoyable! ☺ Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

first of all, thanks for „singing my name“ 😂❤ great song options and both new ones to me. most people go by Beethoven or The Beatles 🤣 Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I really love and appreciate how you articulate your thoughts and make me think or rethink again too! For Parable Of The Sower: I would consider myself a christian, but now more in a spiritual than a behavioral or „strictly religious“ way. But I did study theology and was working as a pastor for a few years. There I was heavily aware of the power that position holds, which can be a great thing, but also a dangerous one. People believed what I told them and sometimes shaped their lives according to that. This just came with the role, but was a scary thing too actually. And I also saw (and experienced myself) a lot of moments where this power was misused and actually hurt or discriminated people. So I was fascinated by the way this story showed how easily a charismatic person can convince a group of people to believe in something they just came up with themselves. This is so important to know and to be aware of and for showing that I loved the book. I didn’t go into the book at all with the same expectations as you (to be „lured in“), but I think that happened a little to me anyway 😅 Coming just out of this church job with one reason to leave being that this place was sooo reluctant to change, I read this book. And Lauren coming from christianity but pointing always at change and making it „her god‘s“ main trait was so fascinating to read about and at some point made me actually think a bit and I loved her for it. Before I realized what’s happening 😂 So I guess the reason I liked this book despite its flaws was mainly because I had a lot of connecting points with it ☺️ The hyperempathy: once it came up first, I just thought the term wasn’t the best and then saw it more as only shared physical pain and could accept it as part of the story while not being the main theme. So it didn’t really bother me that it wasn’t exploited further. But I can totally see you point there! And for the Sci-Fi element: I agree that this really didn’t need to be there. And I’m saying that while being in a “dystopia-phase” where I usually love this elements. But here the goal of living on another planet was really not necessary or then not talked about enough. I liked the second book too. It wasn’t what I expected, but I’m very glad I read it! I thought it brought new topics to the story. I hope you’ll share your thoughts about this too. wow, what a novel that turned out 🤣🙈

Haha I'm glad you enjoyed! I tried my best 😂 Do you have one in mind then? That's the "right" one? Thank you so much for saying that. It's hard sometimes to know what level to make these videos on. I can only do it them my way, but I get in my head sometimes about if I'm overexplaining or editing out too much etc, so that's nice to hear. Thank you :) Your perspective is so fascinating to me, and shows a lot of self reflection and awareness. I've been in a "position of power" in my work as well, not in the same way as a priest, but with people who needed a lot of guidance, let's say. I wanted to try that position for good, as I'm sure you did too, but it's a hard place to be in, I think, if you are not the type of person who sort of thrives on the power itself. Which is very sad, because those are the leaders we ne (like you and me 😅) but it's very taxing. I think this is such a good example of the quote I put in the video, how books are mirrors and we only see in them what we already have in us. I'm glad Parable of the Sower had a different role to play for you, than it did for me. I think I also felt some disconnect with the fact that she was a young girl of color. The ones who are usually in that position are men, often older and white. So I think there was a collision of a person that I would think was good (Lauren) and the act of starting a cult (bad), but then the cult part not really being so bad, but also not as healing as a religion could be... if that makes sense. There wasnt' enough of either alignment or contrast for me, to make it compelling. I'm just thinking aloud here. Thank you for sharing your perspective. I'm sure that's been quite a journey for you. I have been through the experience of having a strong idealist vision, and then having to face realities that didn't align with that, and that can be very heart-breaking. So if your experience was anything like that, you're not alone. I will read the second part in this duology, and I will definitely share my thoughts on that as well! Thank you for writing a novel, I appreciate it! (I do too, all the time haha)
