"Every good soldier needs a crest for his cap. And you shall have your pin, set with diamonds if you wish." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Virginia McDowall, the elder sister of Roddy McDowall. Location Location Fact: 20th Century Fox had an impressive replica of a London tube station built on stage 9 with the aid of original blueprints. Casting Notes Fact: Walter Pidgeon was borrowed from MGM for the production. Walter Pidgeon and Roddy McDowall would appear in two other films together, How Green Was My Valley (1941) and Holiday In Mexico (1946). Fun Enthusiast Fact: When Captain Alan Thorndike (Walter Pidgeon) is captured, Major Quive-Smith (George Sanders) inspects his belongings including his rifle, which bears the maker's name of Hammond anyd Hammond, Bond Street. There was no such gunsmith in the UK and it seems likely the name is borrowed from a very famous gunsmith called Holland and Holland of Bruton Street, which is situated nearby. The rifle was based on a British Enfield Action which has a curved bolt handle. Historical Fact: This was one of several films mentioned in the September 1941 Senate subcommittee hearings on Propaganda in Motion Pictures, where isolationist senators Nye, Clark and Wheeler attacked Hollywood for warmongering. Senator Nye, who testified before the committee, had not seen most of the films mentioned. The subcommittee did not reconvene again due to the attack on Pearl Harbor in December. The featurette included on the 2009 DVD release contends that the making of warmongering films would be a violation of the Neutrality Act, which focused on restricting arms sales to belligerent nations, regardless of their status as aggressor or defender.

Walter Pidgeon was apparently a true gentleman, liked and respected by the general industry. He and Greer Garson made many movies together, the most famous of which is "Mrs. Miniver". But my favorite pairing is "Madame Curie".

The little boy is Roddy McDowell; as a child, he starred in the first "Lassie" movie and in "How Green Was My Valley", also with Walter Pidgeon. He grew up to be a lovely adult actor and also a photographer. Perhaps most famous for playing the chimp Cornelius in "Planet of the Apes", and another role later in the series, but he had lovely comic timing, which he proved several times on the "Carol Burnett Show": kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpupZIucr9pgqK8 And, of course, you recognize the inimitable George Sanders as the evil Major Quive-Smith.

Really cool movie pick--really cool reaction. Johnny recommends 'Noises Off'; a very successful play done as movie... but with Michael Caine, Christopher Reeves, AND Carol Burnette. This play / movie is so funny...there have been documented cases, wherein people in the audience have actually pissed their pants! Very hard to find; Johnny does not have a copy of it--it would be well worth your time. Good Luck, enjoy the adventure of cinema. We respect the Hitchcock praise.

it knocks me out that talking pictures were only about 11 years old when this film was made. my god! what a vision Orson Wells had! wowie wow. I was blown away the first time I saw this film, and it was in the early 1980's. I was 16 years old, and was watching a videotape of CITIZEN KANE. I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. and omg! I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. so many things. I was simply dazzled! that tracking shot from above into the bar with Susan in the storm. the reflection in the glasses of the nurse. the shadows. the newsreel sections. the sound plot-the echoes when Susan is doing the puzzle. when Charles begins tearing apart Susan's room. and then that final section with the reporters, their voices, into that shot of the sled and the name. the paint and bubbling up in the furnace. my mind was blown. this was stunning looking to me on a television screen in the early 1980's. let alone how this must have hit on a big screen in 1940. and this is still stunning looking today 2024. sound had only been put to film for 11 years when CITIZEN KANE was released. This film and THE WIZARD OF OZ both knock me out in terms of the technical things in both films. there were some really talented geniuses involved in the early days of cinema. thank heavens films like this were preserved so that we can still see that vision today. great take on this major piece of art. thanks for posting!

Some more, because that's who I am! Maxim's sister is Gladys Cooper, the great and wonderful. She also made a profession of playing cold, nasty ladies, but also practical and kindly ones. My introduction to her was in "My Fair Lady", where she played Mrs. Higgins. But her most landmark role is in "Now, Voyager," and I can tell you nothing more than that star Bette Davis said she adored working with Cooper. Husband here was Nigel Bruce, always adorable and sweet, and bumbling. He became famous as Dr. Watson in a series of Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone. I see you have "Suspicion" in your line up, so I know you'll have seen Bruce again!

Mrs. Danvers is Judith Anderson, whom you saw in "Laura" - she was Ann Treadwell. Anderson was primarily a stage actress, and apparently, an unforgettable Medea: our mom saw her live in the role. Mr. Favell was George Sanders, of the velvet voice and inimical sneer. He excelled at cads, though he occasionally lent his talents to more heroic and/or tragic types. He played in a movie series of "The Saint", about the adventures of a detective, though he passed the role to his younger brother, Tom Conway. If you see him in "All About Eve", you will catch him in possibly his best role. Col. Julyan is delightful supporting player C. Aubrey Smith. He has a special affection in our family because he bears a strong resemblance to photos of our Spanish father's own grandfather. When our dad was still with us and we'd watch a movie which featured Smith, we'd all jump up and down on his first entrance, crying out: "There's your gran-pa!" And the Coroner is Melville Cooper, yet another in that long line of supporting players who just may be the true foundation of any great movie. To me, he is the most perfect Mr. Collins of any adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" - the 1940 version, which starred Laurence Olivier as Darcy. No one else comes close.

From the book ''Fail safe'' in 1959 written by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler. This movie had a remake in 2000, live on TV, in Black and white with George Clooney. There was also, as you stated, the comedy of Stanley Kubrick ''Dr Strangelove'' but based on anotehr book ''Red Alert'' 1958 from Peter George (similar story)). Great reaction about a masterpiece movie ! thanks

@@henryellow Well, _I_ certainly loved it! I think most who liked "Before the Devil knows You're Dead" would also really dig "God's Pocket", though it wasn't seen by most due to distribution and marketting budget being low. It's budget was only about $1 million, and it grossed about half. "Dog Day Afternoon", "Before the Devil knows You're Dead", and "God's Pocket" are similarly gritty.

"How are we gonna fix it so your shit doesn't fall on my shoes?" Fun Fact: Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke are both old friends of Marisa Tomei in real life. Casting Notes Fact: Philip Seymour Hoffman and Marisa Tomei later appeared in The Ides Of March (2011), whereas Ethan Hawke and Albert Finney previously collaborated in Rich In Love (1992). Actor's Actor Fact: Sidney Lumet said that the scene between Philip Seymour Hoffman and Marisa Tomei in the car when Hoffman has his breakdown was one of the most extraordinary scenes of acting with which he had ever been involved. Final Bow Fact: Sidney Lumet was introduced to digital film techniques through this production and reportedly loved working with digital film, primarily due to its convenience. Sadly, this was his first and ultimately only film to be shot in the digital format. This was Sidney Lumet's final film before his death on April 9, 2011 at the age of 86. And Scene Fact: The scene of Andy and Hank robbing the drug dealer was filmed with two simultaneous setups, one on Philip Seymour Hoffman and one on Ethan Hawke to better capture their tension and reactions to each other. Sidney Lumet is experienced with the use of multiple camera setups in a single take from his career in live television. That's Hot Fact: Marisa Tomei said she agreed to film the explicit nudity because she really wanted to work with director Sidney Lumet. The high-heeled shoes that Marisa Tomei wears in her nude scene with Ethan Hawke are her own shoes. In the DVD's director's commentary, Sidney Lumet says that when the nude scene between Gina and Hank was shot, Ethan Hawke wanted to make Marisa Tomei feel more comfortable, and insisted on being nude as well. He further insisted that every male crew member strip naked while filming the scene to accommodate Tomei.

No doubt, the car breakdown scene was very convincing. Great performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's fine if Ethan Hawke wants to be nude in the scene, but to insist that every male crew be nude as well? What if some of the crew members are uncomfortable naked? 😅 Thanks for sharing these fun facts! 😊

After Gina left Andy, we see him thrashing his house in a very calm manner. I believe this might be silent, subdued rage. We know that his father, Charles, raised Andy very strictly. Charles himself apologised to Andy for never giving him affection and support. Due to such an upbringing, Andy learned how to hide his emotions and to always only rely on himself (that's why Andy never shares his problems with Gina, or anyone else). This also means that Andy never learned how to express his emotions in a proper way. He only knows how to bottle it all up within himself.

"Why make it anywhere? Why make it?" "Hahaha, because it's there, Sidney!" "That's mountains, not plays! Plays are not there until some asshole writes them!" Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Jenny Lumet. Cameos Cameos Fact: New York City theater critics Stewart Klein, Jeffrey Lyons, and Joel Siegel portray themselves. Distinguish Competition Fact: Both of its leads had major roles in DC Comics adaptations. Christopher Reeve starred as Superman in the 1978-87 film franchise, and Sir Michael Caine played Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. Location Location Fact: The exteriors of the beautiful house of Sidney (Sir Michael Caine) and Myra Bruhl (Dyan Cannon) in this movie were portrayed by a home on Long Island, complete with its own windmill. It has since been bought by Robert Downey Jr.. The interiors of the house were filmed at the "Pathé" Studios in New York City's East Harlem. The stage scenes that bookend this movie were filmed at Music Box Theatre on 239 West 45th Street, New York City, where the original stage play the movie was based upon was still running. It was nice to see this reacted to and the reactor enjoy it so much. I like the movie a lot and saw it when I was only a teenager. If I had seen it first when I was a bit older, I might have suspected that Clifford wasn't dead because a star as big as Christopher Reeve had become wouldn't likely have had such a small part. Another thing I enjoy about Deathtrap is Henry Jones as Sidney's lawyer, Porter. Jones had a long career of top-notch supporting work in classics such as Vertigo, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and 3:10 to Yuma.

1. Chinatown in a metaphor for a ghetto or barrio that is somewhat lawless, corrupt and neglected by law enforcement so long as it doesn't affect affluent areas of town. The movie means everywhere is a Chinatown, or that corruption and evil is everywhere. 2. Mulwray is based on William Mulholland (of Mulholland Drive), the dam failure is the St. Francis Dam disaster. "The Valley" is the San Fernando Valley, which was agricultural land (now urban) annexed by Los Angeles. The film does reference the LA Aqueduct which runs 400 miles from the Owens Valley the San Fernando Valley. 3. Mulwray was protecting Katherine and Evelyn from Cross. He was not having an affair with her. Dunaway and the script do a great job in portraying an abuse victim. Evelyn's promiscuity and her praise of Mulwray's understanding suggests he was more a protector/father figure than just a husband. 4. You correctly pointed out Jake had no backup plan. He could have saved Evelyn if they just left, but the showy detective in him had to prove himself right to the villain and police.

Don't know about Fargo as that takes place in the Dakotas (I think). But in this movie, Montauk is at the eastern end of Long Island, where the Long Island Railroad terminates. Can't go any further by train. (They show the actual depot there.) Clifford made up the name of his girlfriend who was going to call. That's why Sidney congratulates him on making up such a character (on the spot). Clifford was played by Christopher Reeve, who had made a tremendous name for himself for playing Superman and Superman II, along with the leading man in a number of films at the time. In 1995, he was paralyzed from the neck down in a horse-riding event, and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair and ventilator until his death in 2004. Although in the play on which this was based, although Clifford and Sydney are shown to be lovers, the kiss between the two characters was unique to the movie. Reeves apparently was upset about that, as I guess that tarnished his image as he-man Superman.
