This cute 5 minute animation accurately shows how addiction works. 👉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fobRmH-dfLd9ptE I highly recommend everyone to watch it. Even though no words are said, the meaning behind it is deep and clear.

The trick of hiding the liquor bottle in the chandelier was parodied in many movies after this. Milland did so himself in "Variety Girl." By the way, the pianist was played by Harry Barris, who was a singing partner of Bing Crosby when they were with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and who wrote many of Bing's hit songs. Thank you for reacting to truly worthwhile movies: you know, the ones with actual stories about believable characters.

And the bartender was played by Howard da Silva; he often played heavies, but I first saw him as genial, almost elfish Benjamin Franklin the musical "1776": kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH6Taoh4l7Z0b6s All three of these gentlemen originated the roles on Broadway; I saw the movie in theaters with my friend and her mom when it first came out, and it sparked a lifelong interest in John Adams (the smallest man with the darkest hair). Jefferson was played by Ken Howard, who, at the time, was in a popular tv series, "The White Shadow".

This was one of if not the first movie to seriously deal with alcoholism. One of Billy Wilder's many amazing films.

Thanks for posting this! Ray Milland is certainly a completely different character here vs the one in "Dial M For Murder." He really gets our sympathy in this one. 8:25 The actress he meets in this scene is Jane Wymann, Ronald Reagan's first wife. Her best performance was the title role in "Johnny Belinda" from 1948, a very unusual film...sad and happy at the same time. Of course, Don is highly intelligent. I've never known a low-IQ alcoholic.

DTs = delerium tremens. My grandfather had them after a car accident. He hallucinated while in the hospital with broken bones. For decades he denied his alcoholism, but felt forced to "cry uncle" and admit that he was an addict when he couldn't deny the connection of having the DTs for the only time in his life coinciding with the first time he was separated from alcohol for such a long duration (2 weeks, or so). He was also a smoker, but quit drinking and smoking all at once after his accident, at age 40. However, he wasn't a happy fellow afterwards. He is what was known as a "dry drunk", meaning the only measures he took to stop both addictions was to have summon maniacal willpower, aided like a prop by an unrelenting pride (or, looked at conversely, he was he was pursued, as though by demons, to avoid the shame of going back on his promises. He saught no treatment of any sort, whether medical, psychiatric, nor AA counselling. He never dealt with the underlying issues that made him seek his escape in liquor: Depression, unresolved resentments towards his parents (especially my great-grandfather, who was a brutal and arbitrary administerer of corporal punishment), tremendous anxieties, an unfulfilling marriage, etc, etc. (No treatment unless you count over indulging in sweets, which eventually led to diabetes). So he dealt with these various combined burdons by being a violent father to my mother and uncle when they were growing up, a cold-seeming parent to all his children, and by having an explosive ans unpredictable temper. All that being said, he was great with me and my four siblings, and found some measure of healing, in golden years of his life. He was kindly and playful and doting from all of my memories. All the dark stuff above was mostly relayed to me by my mother, year after he'd passed. My mom was a nurse, and so believed in the efficacy of medical and psychological help.

It's true that many addictions (alcohol, drugs, etc.) come about when people seek a way to escape from "something". In your grandfather's case, he used liquor as a way to escape the underlying issues which you mentioned. When people are in pain (not just physical), they tend to hurt the people around them too. Sorry for what happened to your mother and uncle. Perhaps your grandfather did find a way to let go, and found healing within you and your siblings. Thank you for sharing this story.

The music you thought you heard before is the drinking song from the opera LaTraviata. Part of the lyrics translate as "Let's drink my love for the glass brings pleasure to us." I enjoy your channel and the old movies you watch.

The opera, by Verdi, is loosely based on a novel by Alexandre Dumas, who loosely based it on the short, intense life of a famous courtesan, Marie duPlessis. The opera is quite beautiful, with several arias that have become well known, though this one is probably the most famous.
