After he took over Federated, Robert Campeau merged Foley’s with Dallas-based Sanger Harris (which the people of neither company wanted). He did this so that he could sell the combined unit and Filene’s to purchase Allied Stores Corporation, a transaction that should have never been approved. Campeau’s actions are still known today as the beginning of The Great Retail Bloodbath.

In the US based Text to Speech system you’re using I think a comma or a dot is interpreted as a slight pause. So whenever it’s suppose 3.7million the bot says: “3 [ pause] 7 million” Good video with some things I had heard before mixed with some new details. Thanks!

In 1970- mom had her 68’ Chevy Corvair repainted in canary yellow at the Oakland Ca. Shop… They painted the hubcaps, antenna and body script all matching paint😂 Dad was able to have them rectify it but geez dudes-😖😖

In one of the early commercials on this reel you see them painting a '55 or so Pontiac. All of the moldings (Pontiac crest and letters) were still on the trunk lid, painted right over them in the commercial.

When I was born they had probably just broken ground on what would become South County Shopping Center, at Lemay Ferry and Lindbergh. Some of my earliest childhood memories were of that mall, and the mid-century majesty of the Famous-Barr rotunda! It was a wonderful department store, and I literally grew up going there frequently with my mom and 3 sibs for school clothes, holiday clothes and shoes, home furnishings and more. St. Louisans were proud of the May Company being based downtown. I had moved away in the very early 90's, but always stopped by Famous when in town, maybe to do some last-minute Christmas shopping, or a wedding gift, etc. It saddened me when the company sold, and the slow turnover of all the stores to Macy's and other chains. What a grand company May's once was, with their family camp on the Meramec and multiple retail chains and properties. In retrospect, and looking at the state of malls today, selling to Federated was a wise move, as trends were already beginning to shift for many shoppers. I'm old now, and long for those days, missing many things and people who are no longer. Thank you for keeping the memories alive.

My Dad would take us to shop Xmas 🎁 at Bruckner Blvd, I remember HS I thought it was Jane Adams (which was an all girls school), my eldest sister friend went to, turns out it was Samuel Gompers, HS. Dad would pick her up with Mom and sis, and shop at "Korvettes,"Xmas 🎄. My mom favorite shop was "Alexanders" at 149th st and 3rd Ave. In the Bronx, NY. Wow this is great recall. That's how it was then, my dad's boss was Sam (Jewish merchant business man), my dad managed his linoleum store by Southern Blvd. We loved and appreciated Sam. On New Year's Eve,my dad would have manischewis 🍷 wine, and bring on lot's of dates, as Sam advised, significant in the Jewish traditions blessings for the New Year, in PR my grandfather would tell stories of 🍇 grapes on New Year's Eve was traditional in his father's home in Spain (Oliveras). Dad also would buy walnuts and white chocolate delicates 🍬 candy from Korvettes. ❤

Worked briefly for this company after being an avid Soft Warehouse customer while attending college. When I interviewed they gave me an aptitude test which was nothing more than a stack management task thinly disguised as a multi-drawer filing cabinet problem. Easily aced the lame test and went to work as a software engineer a couple of weeks later. But when I reported for work they handed me a beeper and told me I would be on 24-hr call. The commute to and from corporate headquarters sucked too, so I immediately began another job search, leaving a few months later to start at a much better job paying a much higher salary for which I could live within a few blocks of the office. I walked to and from work there every day for five years, happily putting in lots of overtime without being chained to a damned beeper.

Thanks for using one of my commercials 😉 #13, to be specific. Was aired on WGRZ TV in Buffalo. Although I’m from across the river in St Catharines, Ont., we get most of our television and radio from Buffalo. Hills was in Williamsville on Main @ Transit Rd, Blasdell off the Thruway, Niagara Falls, Cheektowaga. All converted to Ames after the horrible takeover… Hills was awesome - Ames sucked.
