Grande William!!!! One of the pillars of Rossini renaissance. Marvellous top register, stunning coloratura and technique. Perfect for the repertoire written by Rossini for David.

I have heard Nicola Martinucci in many recordings, most of them with a less lyric voice than here. I was very impressed on how similar his high notes are here to Pavarotti's hight notes. Did anyone else get that same impression?

His voice is exceptional in this farewell concert, and seemed to become even better as the concert went on. The precision of his intonation, the elegant phrasing, the evenness of his vibrato, and his ability to sing diminuendi are all there--and his stamina for a man his age who was beset with chronic diabetes is truly remarkable.

Astonishing singing from the 59 year old Schipa, who alternated these WERTHER performances with ELIXER. With an added concert, he sang 10 times in under 3 weeks! Ridiculous to bring Corelli into the discussion. Schipa was singing in the tradition of de Lucia and Anselmi, with a slender voice under exquisite control and with all the colors of the rainbow in his throat and a nostalgic, longing that I find absolutely bewitching. There are infinitely greater instruments, greater vocal ranges, and even greater techniques. But it's Schipa that I return to again and again.

I was brought here after a close listen of his role as Orpheus in a 2006 recording directed by Sergio Vartolo of Monteverdi's opera. This recording introduces me to his upper register and, as Tagliavini would say, his vocal "cover". Meraviglioso!

Perhaps the greatest tenore di grazia and one of the most popular tenors of the 20th century. Many argue his voice was not very big. Whatever, he had wonderful voice and that's enough for me. Thanks for the post.

His technique is not as solid as Brownlee and Florez, a bit sloppy here. They high notes don't add anything to the aria.

Thanks God his technique is not la Florez and Brownlee
@Darksaga2811 ай бұрын
Not as solid as Florez and Brownlee? Lol, they both sing with a high larynx and nasal tiny voice. Matteuzzi sings with proper technique, true chiaroscuro, squillo by singing with a low larynx.

Matteuzzi is sunshine, when he sings, it brightens and a good mood is created. His singing is also accompanied by a feeling of freedom - there is no problem with the high tones.

Jim This is why Lauri-Volpi himself sounds excellent in Werther? Because he had bad training? Could it be Corelli sounds bad in the French repertoire and in all Bel Canto because he's Corelli? When you don't have any talent for certain roles and languages no amount of training is going to make you sound good. What little sophistication could be beaten into him, he had it all from Lauri-Volpi.
@alexingresss24203 жыл бұрын
Franco's problem was also he mixed methods, a bit from here, a bit from there, a bit from Lauri-Volpi, a bit from Melocchi, a bit from his wife, a bit from who knows else. Too many cooks spol the broth, and Old Bel canto School and Melocchi are incompatible.

Sir, this is a performance featuring Tito Schipa and Gianna Pederzini. No one was even thinking about Corelli.
