@@bsoutdoors5895 thats a shame , you certainly skilled at it . Ive got a dakota pro and still learning to use it , i suck at sharpening it
@bsoutdoors58955 ай бұрын
It takes alot of practice. Be real light with both top n bottom steel. When shaving if it drags and doesn't cut it needs rolled up, if it grabs and jumps alot it needs rolled down. You should hear a real smooth sound when sharpening and that normally means a good sharpen on it.
@RODGERwebb-s2p5 ай бұрын
@@bsoutdoors5895 do you use a lubricant while sharpening really appreciate your help , I'm in New Zealand thankyou
@bsoutdoors58955 ай бұрын
No I don't. If you feel your steel start to heat up, you are pushing to hard or on it for to long. I did top n bottom at same time top normally flat and bottom at about the 10 o'clock position.

how many capes will you get from one blade? excellent video
@bsoutdoors58955 ай бұрын
It depends on the blade, who you get it from, how good you are at sharpening, if you hit something. Some guys can get a 100 from one blade, some 50. I did closer to 50-60 buy I also did 30 white tail hides a day.
@timneas77495 ай бұрын
So, your shaving all from head to tail?
@bsoutdoors58955 ай бұрын
Yes every thing besides a bear and a hog gets shaved head to tail. Due to how the hair lays.

@bsoutdoors58955 ай бұрын
It's going to take you awhile to figure it out. In about a year you should be able to get dozen or so done a day with minimal holes. It's not something you pick up over night.

How'd they turn out? I imagine good since you've been doing it for awhile. Not sure if it's the camera but they look fairly wet still? What would you say the moisture content is just before you add the oil? Good vid.

Genuinely curious, I know that there is some sort of ratio. the height needs to drop to break properly. Would a 4 foot Tumblr like this be able to break a deer hide or would it need to be upgraded to a 6 foot drop?
@bsoutdoors58957 ай бұрын
A 4ft drop will work, will take longer, but the end result will roughly be the same.

My buddy got his first deer out on my property. He got the head mounted with a professional taxidermy. I caped it out for him. The rest of the hide. I have been trying to make a nice for for him. In the process now and it is very difficult. This video among the others are teaching me a lot. Thank you for sharing.

I know it was only 4 ft tall. He has a new one that's bigger. Get on Google and should be able to find an hexagon calculator and that should tell you side lengths and angles.

If you use a tumbler, you don't have to stretch or salt it?
@bsoutdoors58957 ай бұрын
The tumbler is further along in the process. Salt and dry is after you skin and flesh the animal.

I couldn't see when you depressed the springs. Is it more difficult than setting a coil spring trap (I have arthritis in my hands)?
@bsoutdoors58957 ай бұрын
On a #11 no it is not. The longer springs help with setting, also being a smaller trap there isn't as much tension.
