Here's a question... if one were to plant an American chestnut in a region that is WAY outside of it's native range, would it have a decent chance of survival? I live in central Missouri, a good 400 miles from the edge of it's original native range.

I presume the long-term plan is to harvest these chestnuts for the commercial market? Do you have any concerns about consumption by wildlife, like deer, turkeys and squirrels? When do you expect the first heavy crops to harvest? I have 5 year-old Chinese hybrids and got my first small harvest last year. I expect substantial output from them in the next 3-5 years, but I'm further south than you are.
@johnsangl4 күн бұрын
I believe the deer ate about 1/2 of my harvest this past year. I've given up figuring out when the harvest will become "heavy". It is definitely increasing fairly significantly the past few years.
@jasonbroom71473 күн бұрын
@@johnsangl - So, if your goal is to harvest them, commercially, does this mean running a mechanical harvester every day, maybe twice a day, for a period of time? Is the plan to harvest what you can and not worry about how much the critters get?
@patrickpryal93444 күн бұрын
White spruce is only a starvation food for deer. They will eat it they have nothing else, but they cannot digest it.
@johnsangl4 күн бұрын
I was told that about Northern White Pine as well --> My deer were eating them all year round - with corn & soybeans right next to them!

John, I have the same experience with my Norway pines. I caged them and it made all the difference. I ended up buying Tennax plastic fencing fabric and making cages. It is easier to work with than the wire metal and a much more economical option. Just cut to your desired size and zip tie around stakes spaced around the tree. Keep up the great work. Always enjoy your videos. Have a blessed day!

When I get wet heavy snow in Northern Ny it breaks branches on my chestnut trees because of those leaves. A friend had a black bear climb his biggest and best chestnut tree in the fall and destroyed many branches to ger the nuts too. Great video as always.

If we get heavy snows in late Fall before the trees have gone fully dormant, we get limb breakage. Heavy snows after late November usually don't break limbs for me.
@sandych33ks14 күн бұрын
@johnsangl late spring wet heavy snow causes the worst damage here. Any suggestions on crossing or rubbing branches. I have 2 trees that have that issue. Should I cut one of them off to prevent further damage or opening it up to disease ?

This sequoia will probably grow but it needs other sequoias to grow with it if u wanna get it to grow big and tall. In storms or winds they easily top over if they r alone but if there are other sequoias next to them their roots anchor each other down to prevent from falling and they also share nutrients with other sequoias. It’s cuz they have shallow roots that spread horizontally
