I've felt this at times ever since I was diagnosed as being on the spectrum!

Especially when people have talked to me as if I was a child! If the person happens to be younger than I am, it feels even worse!

Thank you so much for sharing your story, Kai. You are very brave to do so. I have social anxiety disorder and possibly autism according to my autistic friends because I tend to act like a stereotypical spazzed out high school anime girl a lot in unknown situations (obviously depending since I’m also a part-time STEAM instructor) and I am one of those people who prefers having the rules in my face first rather than get smoked first for being quirky old me. As such, not even my former boss from a news station thought that I could join the U.S. Army. Well, as fate would have it, not only did I pass my ASVAB (army standardized test) with a high score after my family and I moved back to Maryland from Tennessee last year, the recruiters overall liked that I was passionate about learning languages, making STEAM a reality, (well, the “a” in STEAM is still tough for some of them to swallow, along with most civilians were I live, but eh), and wanting to make the world more open towards hardworking, responsible, kind “disabled people.” Right now, I’m working on making sure that the leaders know that I do put the army first because last time I was in a training, I didn’t do as well because the training took place during the week of community college graduation. So yeah, talk about having to find a work-life balance. Do you speak any Mandarin or Japanese by any chance? I love learning languages myself. I did learn a bit of Russian back in a liberal arts college because I loved that college’s Russian tea parties. Plus, I had a crush on a Russian guy whose mother was a Russian professor. She didn’t like me though because I’m an explorer at heart (it’s one of my ways of coping with depression). It’s a long story. In any case, I hope that you’re doing well so far. It’s important that these stories keep getting told. No one should feel that their opportunities are limited because of what they got either from birth or later on in life.

I spent maybe 18 years denying to myself, and everybody else, that I had Aspergers. I did declare it on my joining form for the Army (I figured they'd be able to find out from my GP anyway) and I didn't get a chance, just rejected immediately. That was ten years ago and I've had a pretty eventful life since. All I can say about Aspergers is that you have to own it. All your idiosyncrasies may not be as terrible as you think and some people might even like them or find them attractive/interesting. Another advantage is being able to spot someone on the spectrum at twenty metres away (mannerisms, stimming, body language, etc). I was told when I was younger that people on the spectrum don't read other people well, so I studied it very hard and learned as much as I could. Knowledge is power. Of course people may have disadvantages being on the spectrum in some areas depending on where they are but they will also have advantages. Use them. Own it. Also, I love this guy at 1:56 he looks just like Filthy Frank/Pink Guy haha

I've wanted to serve in the Armed Forces so bad because of my family and everything I've waited for is coming soon but I could just get a medical waiver and serve VERY soon as I really can't give up and this is inspiring.
