Brought back memories of an HP-1000 w/ RTE-IV B used at a chemical plant in Tacoma, WA during the early 1980's. Not sure how much it really helped in improving process efficiency. That plant closed down at the end of 1985. Last time I saw an HP-1000 in actual use was as an adjunct to some chemical laboratory devices in about 1998. Still going strong, but spares were an issue.

One of my prized possessions is my dad’s book about 1401 Fortran. It’s pretty wide-ranging and describes the 1401 architecture (very odd by modern standards) and how the Fortran compiler worked (an early form of precedence parser).

It is amazing to see the reverse engineering at play here. I cannot imagine the brainwaves it took to pioneer this, not to mention all the other systems that had to come together to put a man on the moon and bring them back safely. Yet we continue to struggle with war, healthcare and poverty with all the computing power and tech we have. What is this new barrier?

I built those through the 1980’s, mostly the ASM/IF/Display/HVPS box, the 85662 Many 8568/66 made their homes in AWACS Planes during the cold war… Never saw that symptom exactly but you got it man! Mind you, no microprocessor in IF box but an Algorithmic State Machine which was way over my head ;) that section was board replacement rather than to component for other sections repairs. Brings back memories, and also back pain 😂 I think we had about 15 Techs and two shifts, and 12 or so Assemblers next to us. $50-60k per set as I recall.

When I was at GEC Coventry UK in the early 80's (Working on QPSK Modulators for the Telephone network, 'System X' ), we used HP and Fluke and Tektronics equipment. I can't remember using any sort of down market equipment apart from 1 Philips scope which I needed to set up the QPSK modulator in connection with a whole wall of high end equipment. Hell we had Tektronics sampling scopes working in the Pico range. I was involved in the 2GHz but mainly 11GHz range and 19GHz was being played with when I left. The difference in Waveguide size from 2GHz to 19GHz was like being knee high to an adult. I can see here, the whole setup seems to be only the best equipment, HP, Keysight, Agilent, Fluke......nice to see. Awesome setup guys....Would love to be there.👍

I love seeing this old technology at work. It would be difficult for me to work in this environment because of the constant noise but it would certainly be interesting.

Just like when I used to play Nethack for hours on an XT and an amber screen. Watching you play this... time slips by... "Damn your eyes!" -Young Frankenstein. I am teleporting back to reality now.

I used to work with those Dolch boxes back in the 486 days in the mid '90s. They are nice machines. We sold them with our proprietary hardware card installed. Drop it onto a membrane and place another on top of it, and drop that into an outer box and it is ready to ship almost anywhere without fear of damage. I think I had about five machines running SETI@home on them all day long. I had a BeOS box too. Life was fun toying with PCs back then. Shame all the magazines died out over here.

May be this help, It's a new rev of the LM567. This is a tone detector IC and can be used as Wide FM decoder. A new version of this IC is the LMC567 a CMOS or HCMOS version of the old one. From TI datasheet saids no more than 500KHz but if is HCMOS i'm thinking it will work in few MHz. May be it's a good idea supply it with 9V. Nice work with 4046!

Growing more and more fond of mechanical solutions of the past. Nowadays it's easy to do everything digitally. But there is beauty in analog user interface and a machine that works just by supplying it with power. Even more impressed you actually found out how to calibrate it.

OMG this explains why (some) 1930's science fiction assumes space ships wouldn't have radio communications to earth, which always seemed like a very clunky device to make "castaway" type plots work but I now know was actually been the state of the art at the time! A very random crossover between my tech youtube and book youtube watching but very informative elevator music, thanks!
