While I do think that Brompton became to woke, I think they would have been better served if they designed about 18-inch wheels that could mount Big Apple tires with fenders, like Birdy.

18" and other large sizes really don't look good on the Brompton. They could have widened the extremities and make 305mm rims available for 2" tires already on the market for that size.

My local bike dealer that sells bromptons and also brompton clone titanium frames just came out with aceoffix aluminum copy of this t line including even the carbon fiber fork. Not sure how aluminum holds vs titanium frame. About 650usd then you can build your own bike with your choice of wheelset etc. I’m not a fan of the t line design. I know owners and the common complaint is the flexing stem. Something weird in the design. funny you mention the kick scooter. I’m actually using that now to get the metro because it’s rainy season in Singapore and bromptons rust too easy so it sits stored. I still think price is a factor for brompton. I notice the local marketplace having more used one for sale. Ideally ideally people keep their brompton for life and it’s small to store and it’s there when you need it. But! It’s too expensive for a sitting depreciating asset so people just sell off and I tell you it’ll be harder to pick up cycling as a recreation once you sold off your own bike.

Brompton said they created the G-line having the feed back from consumers ok , they certainly didn’t talk with the same people I did being seven different countries with Brompton clubs and bike shops in those countries, a broken record comes to mind but not one but all said a belt drive system would not only increase sales but would open up the market for more female riders to buy one , every man who was asked why their wives don’t own a Brompton same answer irrespective which country the question was asked = they would buy one if it was a belt drive because they don’t like the chain drive, ironically simple is not in the Brompton vocabulary.

You stated that you think belts cannot last as long as chains? Been reading that belts actually do last longer than bicycle chain. Belts even work well on largest motorcycles! High strength carbon fiber is positioned by "plastic." Carbon fiber provides very good strength. Most fascinating videos on the Internet! Love them!

Speaking of upgradability, the deal-breaker for me with Brompton is the ridiculous drivetrain on the affordable versions. 3 speed IGH + a 2 speed derailleur? You have to spend big bucks to both buy a 6 speed and then upgrade. With Terns, you get a standard Shimano derailleur drivetrain that is cheaply upgradeable. That with the affordably upgradable 20" wheel setup, pushes me to the Tern. Terns are more regular bikes that take regular bike parts, as opposed to the specialized (expensive & harder to source in the US) parts of the Brompton. Since I don't commute anymore, I currently am upgrading the cheapest double folding 26" Tern Eclipse and the hinge is rock solid (and it's not spring operated). Cheap, high-end 26" MTB wheels are plentiful since the general demise of the 26" MTB wheel, and, as I said, cheap high end 10 speed drivetrain upgrades also abound on eBay. This thing rides like a regular bike and folds enough for my purposes. Love it! Might go for a BYB someday if space becomes a concern.

just been watching the fairing for number 58 moulton which I built as a private entry for the festival of human power held in Milton Keynes UK. The bike is a Moulton AM 7 racing in a round the houses event held in August 1985 (August 31 & September 1) at the central shopping center car park of Milton Keynes & sponsored by Zapple ( an apple drink ) The rider is Nicky Dibble aged 16 and a schoolboy of Maidstone in Kent who rode in 2 events winning cups & prize money in both. I had to build an oven with an electric radiator and blow formed several bubbles as an experiment then trimmed them to fit a light tubular frame to connect to the existing front carrier mountings on the frame of the bike by 2 bolts. The fairing and Nicky performed well hence the podium positions. Alex Moulton was present with a factory prepared entry and rider but invited Nicky to ride his machine on the second day of the event based on his performance on the first day . This fairing is still in my shed 40years later, where it was built along with other 2 wheel transport experimental machines. The fairing does provide improved aerodynamics/ streamlining from the front, acts as a sail with wind from the rear and minimal side wind effect as it is very short in length. ( no effect on the steering as it is connected to the frame not the handlebars) . It was built as a touring screen rather than a racing screen but seemed to performed well in both Clive Fletcher, Maidstone , Great Britain, UK. I wonder who posted the photograph, I thought I was the only one with a photographic record of my fairing, no Iphones, internet, emails in those days, just cameras & film.

Personally, I don't accept much of the analysis and criticism of Brompton's strategy and management in this video. Brompton is all about careful, thoughtful, ingenious design, and quality manufacturing, with pretty robust testing of their bikes and components. People choose to pay that extra for a Brompton rather than a generic copy because they know that the Brompton will easily last them 20 years, not fall apart after two years, and will hold its resale value better. Granted, there are other decent folding bike manufacturers such as Birdy and Dahon, but they fill slightly different niches. Brompton and other folding bike manufacturers have relied on commuters as a major type of customer - multi-mode travel on the way to the office. But hey, didn't we just have a pandemic and, in many offices, in many countries, hybrid working or even working from home most of the week is now acceptable. Therefore, for a typical customer of this type, there simply might not be the need to spend money on a folding bike to make the journey faster/nicer, because there are now maybe only two journeys to the office per week, rather than five. Therefore, Brompton's management's decision to release the G-Line seems very wise. They are tapping into a new customer base - including younger riders - people who want a bike that could do for an occasional, multi-mode commute, but can be thrown in the boot of a car or taken onto the train into the countryside. These might be existing 16" Brompton owners or perhaps those trying a Brompton for the first time. Actually, it can be a business-savvy move to innovate and invest in new design and manufacturing at a time when traditional sales are declining and the original customer needs are changing. Obviously, I hope that Brompton (and Birdy and Dahon) succeed, as the world is a better place for us having their bikes to choose from. Unless everyone gets sick of hybrid working or is forced back into the office, it's likely these manufacturers will all need to adapt at least slightly. **Brompton, if you are reading this, I have been a happy UK owner of a C-line for the last 9 months. I am also an experienced mountain biker, so would be keen to test your new G-Line, to see where it lands between my C-line and my hardtail mountain bike, in terms of ride feel and transport to trail.
