good thing this showed up in my feed. was about to give up learning it for a final project of a small sample game.

Seeing this base I feel like there should be a documentary about how Minecraft building styles have changed over the years. Alpha had blocky simple buildings, Beta had complex but still simple looking structures, then the early 2010s had plenty of those modern houses and buildings that were pretty realistic, and now in the 2020s builds are extremely complex and detailed.

I've realized something about the Beta/Alpha versions of Minecraft that took me a long time to put into words: On top of the lonely setting you mentioned, the limited block types really lends itself to a very specific type of gameplay/building. Modern Minecraft has so many different block types that people will build structures that are trying to be as realistic and/or detailed as possible. This simply isn't possible in Beta/Alpha Minecraft because of your limited toolset. These limitations mean people tend to naturally build things that tend to trend towards surrealism instead of realism. Your sand, tree village at the beginning is a perfect example. It looks like something I'd have dreamed of as a kid, and only have a vague recollection of. If somebody were to try and make a similar creation in modern Minecraft, they'd probably try to make it into a recreation of the Ewok village from Star Wars, or something along those lines.

Yep, limited block selection is generally a good thing in my opinion.
@EllaKarhu2 күн бұрын
That's the main thing that keeps me coming back to older versions. I'm really bad at building anything remotely interesting in current Minecraft, but with the limited blocks it's so easy to just stop overthinking it and build some weird shit that doesn't really represent any real world structures. It also helps that there aren't any distractions. There's not much to do, you just gather resources and build. Mine and craft, if you will.

I had to read the thread as I wasn't sure I had posted to that one or not. I've stuck my nose into several similar posts. I tend to think of Lua as the skeleton of a programming language that one extends with bits and pieces during application development. I've been messing around with LuaJIT for the past twelve years, and it's just a very handy thing as much for its FFI (e.g. I have a small script that calls out to mmap directly) as its speed. I committed enough to the platform that when I see a nice library or subsystem like a database engine, I look to see if someone's already written Lua support for it. My first serious application was a backenbd for the LPRng print queuing system. The low level stuff that slung and retrieve bytes from the PostScript printers was in C, but the top level logic was in LuaJIT. These days, being a lot more comfy with LuaJIT's FFI than I was at the start, I suspect I could even do most of the I/O stuff in LuaJIT and ditch a lot of the C code.. Quick note: Iguana starts with a capital I, not a lower case l. The system is named after medium sized lizard.

Bro, it's a game in early alpha and this guy is a tester, not a developer. The idea is that when it's finished, it will actually be optimized and have extended modding support. It's still up in the air to see how this game will set itself apart from Minecraft, but I for one am very excited

I really loved the new world generation, especially how stunning it looks at sunset! First of all, the water looks very clear. It would be even better if it gets darker towards the bottom (not talking about the ocean), which would give it a more realistic feel. - I noticed in other comments that adding something like distant horizons would be amazing. - The jumping feels a bit like being on the moon; it could be a bit more lively. - Adding a unique character model that shows the arms in both third-person and first-person views, but distinct from Minecraft, would make it more original and appealing. I'm following Cosmic Reach, and I think it’s a fantastic project. I’m excited for the upcoming updates!

I wonder if caving in this game is going to be different than minecraft caving. Minecraft caving is somewhat simple, just running around and placing torches everywhere. I can imagine rock climbing type stuff to adapt to the more vertical spaces.
@tortellini_soup2 ай бұрын
The rock climbing idea is interesting. I haven't thought about how to improving the caving experience. One thing I'll push back on is that Minecraft caving is "just running around and placing torches everywhere." I found caving to be perhaps the most enjoyable and engaging part of the time, especially when in abandoned mineshafts. I assume there are even more dangerous and interesting underground cave layouts and structures in the game nowadays.
@professionalidiot44092 ай бұрын
I agree on that, I meant to highlight the simplicity of minecraft caving rather than how much I enjoy it. In reality, caving is one of my favorite things to do in minecraft.
